2 family med Annual Review in Family Medicine Controversies and Challenges in Primary Care Hotel Nikko San Francisco San Francisco, CA OVERVIEW Presented by the Department of Family and Community Medicine, University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine, the Annual Review in Family Medicine is designed to update primary care clinicians in controversial and rapidly changing areas. The emphasis is on practical and useful information for clinical practice. The discussions will also be extremely valuable in preparation for the board examination of the American Board of Family Medicine. TARGET AUDIENCE This course is intended for family medicine and other primary care providers including internists, pediatricians, gynecologists, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, nurses, and other health care professionals. OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this course, participants will have improved skills and strategies to: Identify the indications and uses of the newest oral and injectable diabetes medications; Reduce HgA1c in diabetic patients; Identify patients in the primary care setting with alcohol abuse disorders; Recognize the barriers to patients seeking care for treatment of alcohol abuse disorders. Risk stratify patients for adverse outcomes who are on opiate medications for chronic pain. Effectively and safely prescribe opiates for chronic pain management while reducing the risk of overdose. Identify the difference between integrative medicine and complementary and alternative medicine. Name reputable resources for in-depth information related to the most commonly used healing modalities. Assess the strength of evidence in studies of integrative medicine modalities. Identify appropriate roles of family physicians in applying integrative medicine techniques in primary care. Obtain and document a medical history that includes relevant prenatal and family history information by both patient interview and review of medical records. Utilize basics of counseling and education for patients and at-risk family members concerning the genetic basis of various conditions. Develop a management plan for genetics referrals for conditions such as developmental delay, short stature, cleft lip/palate, and hearing impairment. Recognize the ethical, legal, psychological, and social issues involving pre-symptomatic genetic testing for disorders such as Huntington disease and cancer in adults and children. ACCREDITATION The University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine (UCSF) is accredited by the Accreditation Council of Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
