2 5th Pediatric Bone Health Symposium The 5th Pediatric Bone Health Symposium will summarize recent findings on the following topics: Advances in knowledge about the acquisition of peak bone strength including the genetic and modifiable correlates of optimal bone health Guidelines for optimal interpretation of bone densitometry in children and teens Diagnostic criteria for pediatric osteoporosis underscoring the increased emphasis on fragility fractures Genetic determinants of primary osteoporosis (bone fragility) Prevalence, risk factors and treatment of secondary osteoporosis in chronic disease TARGET AUDIENCE The target audience includes general pediatricians as well as subspecialists in the areas of genetics, orthopedics, endocrinology, gastroenterology, rheumatology, neurology, nephrology, radiology and hematology/oncology who engage in clinical care and clinical research. The goals are to encourage optimization of bone health in all youth, increase awareness of risk factors for bone fragility and increase screening for fragility fractures including asymptomatic vertebral fractures. OBJECTIVES An attendee completing this course will be able to: Describe the contribution of genetics, diet, activity, and hormones to peak bone strength Identify children who are at greatest risk for bone fragility Articulate the value and limitations of bone density tests Discuss the current controversies surrounding the use of pharmacologic agents to treat osteoporosis in children and teens Hyatt Regency San Francisco San Francisco, California ACCREDITATION The University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine (UCSF) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
