2 Conference Audience & Purpose Continuing Education Credentialing Visit for full conference details & online registration Target Audience This activity will benefit physicians, nurse practitioners, nurses, pharmacists, social workers, spiritual counselors and nurse aides caring for, or providing education to providers caring for patient s with life-limiting illnesses or requiring palliative treatment. Purpose To share evidence based information in pain & symptom management and end of life care, along with communication tools to better care for patients with serious illness. Physician / CME This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) through the joint sponsorship of The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Medicine, Hospice & Palliative Care Association of Arkansas, and the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System. The UAMS College of Medicine is accredited by the ACCME to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The UAMS College of Medicine designates this live activity for a maximum of 12.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. It is the policy of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Medicine to ensure balance, independence, objectivity, and scientific rigor in all sponsored or jointly sponsored educational activities. All individuals who are in a position to control the content of the educational activity course/activity directors, planning committee members, staff, teachers, or authors of CME) must disclose all relevant financial relationships they have with any commercial interests as well as the nature of the relationship. Nursing Home Administrator / OLTC This activity has been approved by the AR Department of Human Services/Division of Medical Services - Office of Long Term Care for a maximum of 13 (6.5 per day) CE Hours. Nurse / CNE This activity has been approved for a maximum of 12.5 continuing nurse education contact hours. 4 Day 1 Thursday, September 19 Plenary & Concurrent Sessions Plenary Session 8:00-9:30 a.m. Kathleen Rusnak, PhD - Because You ve Never Died Before: Spiritual Issues at the End of Life : During this session Rusnak will describe the spiritual shift in world view that occurs when a person learns they have a terminal prognosis as well as the seven dimensions of the framework that makes up the spiritual experience of dying patients. Plenary Session 9:30-10:30 a.m. Sarah Harrington, MD, Neal Wyatt, DO, Thomas Harris, MD and Paula Andrews, RN - Hospice/ Palliative Care Collaboration: Case Studies : Dr. Harrington, UAMS Palliative Care and Dr. Wyatt, Arkansas Hospice will present a case study and Dr. Harris, Mercy Hospice and Paula Andrews, Mercy Hospital Palliative Care will present a case study showing how the providers worked together for the benefit of the patient and family. Plenary Session 10:45 11:45 a.m. Kimberly Curseen, MD - Culture Competency in Palliative Care : Curseen will review the diversity of our population, explore the importance of culture and how it should frame our practice and communication. Concurrent Session 12:45 1:45 p.m. Sarah Harrington, MD - Opioid Prescribing - Part 1 of 2 : Harrington will review basic opioid prescribing methods, common side effects and opioid conversion. Mike Chandler, PharmD - Palliative Medication Reconciliation : Chandler will describe common medications seen in the end of life setting and discuss benefits and burdens of common medications classes at the end of life. Diane Swaim, MDiv - Peace at Last: Leading the War Veteran Toward a Peaceful Death : Swaim will review the symptoms of PTSD as well as resources to why the war experience is important to the patient s dying experience. She will share skills to assist in addressing unresolved war experiences. Concurrent Sessions 2:15-3:15 p.m. Sarah Harrington, MD - Opioid Workshop Part 2 of 2 - Harrington will review basic opioid prescribing methods, common side effects and opioid conversion. Angela Norman, DNP, APN - Alzheimer and Dementia Care : Norman will describe the types of dementia, and the communication barriers and better ways to interview the patient. She will also review interventions for difficult behavior. Kimberly Curseen, MD - Making the Decision for Artificial Nutrition for the Severely Cognitively Impaired Patient : Curseen will discuss the myths and facts about artificial nutrition, nursing home concerns, and how to collaborate with caregivers when making this decision. Concurrent Session 3:30-4:30 p.m. Neal Wyatt, DO - Neuropathic Pain: A comprehensive Review : Wyatt will explain ways to identify neuropathic pain based on history and physical exam findings. He will share non-pharmalogical and pharmalogical treatment options. Leslie Landrum, MD - Respiratory Symptoms at the End of Life : Landrum will identify respiratory symptoms associated with end of life processes and review assessment of symptoms, with interventions to prevent or diminish these symptoms. Tresa Hooks, OSW-C - Advanced Directives Fact & Fiction : Hooks will explain the differences between the Living Will, DPAHC, and SAPO as well as problems with implementation.
5 Day 2 - Friday, September 20 Plenary & Concurrent Sessions Plenary Session 8:00-9:30 a.m. Esme Finlay, MD - Smoothing the Transition from Advanced Cancer Care to Hospice Care : Finlay will share the growth in cancer treatment availability and some of the challenges surrounding those treatments. She will identify the factors oncologists consider when prescribing chemotherapy treatment and patient/family preferences for communication about EOL cancer care. Plenary Session 9:30-10:30 a.m. Sarah Harrington, MD - Evidence-Based Practice in Palliative Care : Harrington will review major studies from palliative care literature, including discussion of methods, results, key issues and limitations. She will discuss the impact of studies and practical application to palliative care. Plenary Session 10:45-11:45 a.m. Carrie Brown, MD, Kimberly Curseen, MD, Tresa Hooks, OSW-C - Recognize Abuse - Child to Elder in the Hospice & Palliative Care Settings : This panel will define types of abuse and how to recognize it from child to elder. They will also describe common characteristics of abusers as well as the health care provider s role and legal obligations in reporting abuse. Concurrent Session 12:44-1:45 p.m. Sarah Harrington, MD - Opioid Prescribing - Part 1 of 2 : Harrington will review basic opioid prescribing methods, common side effects and opioid conversion. Mike Chandler, PharmD - Palliative Medication Reconciliation : Chandler will describe common medications seen in the end of life setting and discuss benefits and burdens of common medications classes. They will describe how our body and verbal language effects the family s experience. They will also describe useful contemporary concepts in understanding grief and bereavement. Concurrent Session 2:15 3:15 p.m. Sarah Harrington, MD - Opioid Prescribing - Part 2 : Harrington will review basic opioid prescribing methods, common side effects and opioid conversion. Stan Bradley, MD - Controlling Gastrointestinal Symptoms in Hospice : Bradley will share techniques for controlling constipation, nausea and vomiting. Kimberly Curseen, MD - Making the Decision for Artificial Nutrition for the Severely Cognitively Impaired Patient : Curseen with discuss the myths and facts about artificial nutrition, nursing home concerns, and how to collaborate with caregivers when making this decision. Concurrent Session 3:30-4:30 p.m. Robin Devan, MD - A Primer on PCAs : Devan will share the circumstances in which it is appropriate to prescribe pain medicine via a PCA. She will review how to determine the appropriate dosage of analgesia via a PCA. Morgan Sauer, MD - Anxiety. Agitation & Delirium : Sauer will review the signs of anxiety, agitation and delirium, including how to address and care plan for each. David Smith, MD - Advanced Care Planning and Communication : Smith will discuss advance directives and the impact they can have on quality palliative care. He will review various discussion tools to improve the implementation of advance directives.
