5 Head and Neck Endocrine Surgery the ucsf Head and Neck Endocrine Surgery course aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the evaluation, treatment, surveillance, and new approaches in the surgical management of thyroid and parathyroid disorders. a distinguished guest faculty along with faculty from ucsf will offer an outstanding series of lectures, case presentations, and panel discussions. target audience this course will be beneficial to head and neck surgeons, general surgeons, and endocrinologists. objectives An attendee completing this course should be able to: Improve assessment of common benign and malignant thyroid and parathyroid cytopathology and histopathology; Evaluate and treat benign thyroid nodules; Evaluate and treat thyroid malignancies; Incorporate strategies to improve management of the neck in thyroid cancer; Apply recent advances in molecular biology of thyroid cancer; Discuss the diagnosis and localization of parathyroid tumors; Improve management of hyperparathyroidism; Apply emerging techniques and new technology in minimally invasive head and neck endocrine surgery. going green! Nurses: For the purpose of recertification, the American Nurses Credentialing Center accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credit TM issued by organizations accredited by the ACCME. pharmacists: The California Board of Pharmacy accepts as continuing professional education those courses that meet the standard of relevance to pharmacy practice and have been approved for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit TM. physicians assistants: AAPA accepts category 1 credit from AOACCME, Prescribed credit from AAFP, and AMA PRA Category 1 Credit from organizations accredited by the ACCME. american college of SurgEoNS thyroid and parathyroid ultrasound SkillS-oriENtEd course the objective of this course is to introduce the practicing surgeon to office-based examination of the thyroid and parathyroid glands and related pathology. the distinction between normal and malignant lymphadenopathy will be emphasized with a demonstration of the comprehensive examination of lymph node basins in cervical zones i-vi. the process of ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (fna) of thyroid nodules and enlarged lymph nodes will be demonstrated in didactic lecture format. in addition, the hands-on skill sessions allow the surgeon to learn varied techniques of fna phantom models. patient volunteers with thyroid and parathyroid pathology and normal glands will participate in the skill sessions. credentialing and coding issues will also be discussed. objectives An attendee completing this course should be able to: Accurately use ultrasound to examine the thyroid and parathyroid glands and related pathology; Demonstrate comprehensive examination of cervical lymph nodes in levels I-VI; Characterize differences between normal and malignant lymph nodes; Demonstrate the process of ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration (FNA); Demonstrate all these skills during a hands-on skill session with live and phantom models. prerequisite: Registrants must have completed a course in basic ultrasound to attend this course. Three options are available to meet the prerequisite: 1. Completion of a previously offered ACS postgraduate course titled Ultrasound for Surgeons. 2. Completion of the CD-ROM course, Ultrasound for Surgeons: The Basic Course.
