The Schl s multidisciplinary expertise includes clinicians, epidemilgists, statisticians, scial scientists, mlecular bilgists and immunlgists, and we wrk with partners wrldwide t supprt the develpment f teaching and research capacity. Our educatin prvisin has expanded t mre than 1,000 Lndn-based Master's and Research students, 3,000 studying pstgraduate curses by distance learning, and 1,000 each year n shrt curses and cntinuus prfessinal develpment. Our free nline curses (MOOCs) are studied by mre than 30,000 participants glbally. The Schl perfrms well in varius glbal university league tables. In the US News Best Glbal Universities Ranking 2017, we are ranked sixth in the wrld (tgether with Oxfrd University) in the fields f scial sciences and public health. In the 2016 CWTS Leiden Ranking, the Schl was ranked fifth in the wrld fr research impact acrss all disciplines, based n the share f institutins utputs within the tp 1% f papers by citatin in all areas f science and independent f size f utput. The Schl was named University f the Year 2016 by Times Higher Educatin, in recgnitin f ur respnse t the Ebla epidemic. The Schl is a member f the M8 Alliance f Academic Health Centres, Universities and Natinal Academies, the Assciatin f Schls f Public Health in the Eurpean Regin, and the Cnsrtium f Universities fr Glbal Health. UNIT INFORMATION Established in 1989, the MRC/UVRI Uganda Research Unit is an internatinally recgnized interdisciplinary centre f excellence fr research n HIV infectin and pririty diseases. It prvides critical knwledge n the evlving HIV epidemic and n the evaluatin f innvative health care ptins, treatment and preventin, and has shaped health plicy and practice nt nly in Uganda but in Africa and wrldwide. 2 Thrugh a multidisciplinary apprach, intersecting basic science, epidemilgical research, scial-behaviural research and the cnduct f new interventin evaluatin studies (vaccines, micrbicides and therapies), the Unit has prvided evidence n the changing nature f the HIV epidemic, including the pathgenesis f the virus, disease mechanisms, transmissin dynamics, preventin practice and the ptimisatin f care which has had real impact n practice and plicy in Uganda and beynd. In 2014, the Unit engaged in a high level strategic review f future health pririties f the East Africa regin. As a cnsequence, the Unit was strngly supprted during its recent review t evlve its research activities within three key pririty thematic areas HIV; Endemic, Neglected, Emerging and Re-emerging Infectins (ENERI); and Nn-Cmmunicable Disease (NCD). The new prvisin f 5 year supprt cmmenced April 2017 and tw f the theme leaders are in place. The Directr is nw seeking t recruit an exceptinal, internatinally respected scientist wh will prvide the strategic visin t lead the HIV theme and within this develp a significant prgramme f research in the field f HIV interventin. This is a full time pprtunity, althugh the pssibility f a jint appintment with a University r research institutin will als be cnsidered prvided wrk at the Unit accunts fr at least 0.7 FTE. HIV THEME The main Unit campus is situated in Entebbe at the Uganda Virus Research Institute and has dedicated field statins and links t key hspitals in different rural/urban settings. It supprts imprtant cmmunity chrts and has excellent clinical and labratry facilities, plus a newly established biinfrmatics center. MRC cre funding fr the Unit was renewed cmmencing April 2017 and the Unit attracts substantial additinal supprt frm internatinal funding agencies. It has an established staff cmplement f ver 200 scientists, clinicians and senir administrative staff frm many parts f the wrld, and ver 180 supprt staff. It als hsts many visiting researchers and students. The Unit has an internatinal track recrd f research n HIV. It has led and cntributed t majr internatinal multi centre trials evaluating nvel preventin and treatment ptins and cnducts scial behaviural and basic science studies. It attracts supprt frm a variety f internatinal funders including EDCTP, Wellcme, DFID and IAVI. The prgrammes within the HIV theme will undertake research t better understand and thereby effectively respnd t the changing nature f the HIV epidemic in Uganda and the regin and that are mst likely t have direct impact n practice and plicy change. Existing prgrammes within the HIV theme include basic virlgical, immunlgical and epidemilgical research as well as a strng crss cutting scial science prgramme.the theme leader will be anticipated t lead preventin and/r care prgramme f interventin r health systems research t cmplement these activities. JOB DESCRIPTION Main Activities and Respnsibilities The Unit Directr is seeking t recruit an utstanding individual t lead the HIV theme within the Unit. The individual will be expected t prvide visinary leadership t the theme as well as leading their wn excellent, distinctive prgramme f interventinal r systems research, cmplementing the basic, epidemilgical and scial science strengths f the Unit. The theme leader will be expected t wrk cllabratively with ther theme and prgramme leaders t develp and sustain a creative synergy s as t tackle health pririties f the regin. The Theme Leader will cntribute substantially t the Unit s research endeavur, encurage the develpment f mre junir clleagues and will be expected t supprt scientists cnducting research in a brad range f ther areas cmpatible with the missin f the Unit. 6 PERSON SPECIFICATION This frm lists the essential and desirable requirements needed by the pst hlder t be able t perfrm the jb effectively. Applicants will be shrtlisted slely n the extent t which they meet these requirements. Yu will be an exceptinal, internatinally respected scientist in the HIV field with an excellent track recrd in the delivery f interventin; implementatin; r health systems research, ideally within a develping cuntry. This will be evidenced thrugh an excellent research publicatin track recrd in internatinal respected jurnals and influence f health practice and plicy. Yu will be able t demnstrate that yu have led and secured significant internatinal research grant funding. Yu will be medically qualified with an MBChB/MBBS/MD and PhD r equivalent; Clinical speciality i.e. MMED r MRCP will be an added advantage. Research experience within the HIV (r clsely related) field required. Yu will be respnsible fr the management and planning f the HIV theme. As an inspiratinal leader yu will have the ability t engage yur team with a clear visin fr delivering the Unit and Theme strategy and be cmmitted t fstering the develpment f yur staff at all levels. Yu will have a histry f attracting significant research funding. Yu will be expected t supprt the Unit Directr in planning and implementing the research strategy fr the Unit and, in assciatin with ther research leaders, ensuring effective leadership and management f the Unit. Yu shuld have experience f develping and implementing an innvative prgramme f research, and will need t be a highly credible research leader. 7 SALARY AND CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT The pst is funded fr 5 years. The salary fr the pst is in the range frm 72, ,192 per annum (inclusive f Lndn Weighting). The pst will be subject t the LSHTM terms and cnditins f service. Annual leave entitlement is 30 wrking days per year, pr rata fr part time staff.
