3 BBQ Dinner Meeting at The Dressage Arena, Musk: Second meeting of the year and second BBQ was held in the picturesque surroundings of David and Sally s beautiful property at Musk. The broad passageway between stables and storerooms of the immense interior of the Dressage Arena was an idea place to set up a long table for the BBQ Dinner. Rotary Business Awards: Lesley also announced that the winners of the Rotary Business Awards had been decided. These can t be revealed here but will be announced at the Town Hall on 25 th. The only disappointment here was that no young employee was nominated. Australia Day Eve Wednesday 25 January 2017 Daylesford Town Hall, 7:00pm A civic event will take place on Australia Day Eve. This includes a Citizenship Ceremony and Hepburn Shire Council s Australia Day Awards. The Sight Confronting Early Arrivals Mark manned the BBQ cooking up steak, fish (surf and turf) and hot potatoes, while a fine selection of salads was provided by Sally. 6 Bring The Light The Rex Cinema 1 st March 6:30 for 7:00pm From the moment we are born, we are treated differently This film follows a group of Nepalese women over a period of four years. The women s lives have been radically changed with access to education and skills training; providing them with the ability to be selfsufficient with sustainable income generation. A story of courage, resilience and strength, these women seek to create a better life for themselves, their families and other women in Nepal. The life of a Nepalese woman is beset with challenges. Raised in a patriarchal society, they are seen as second rate citizens. The majority of women have been exposed to domestic violence, over 50% are illiterate, and over 7,000 girls and women are trafficked abroad every year. Stephanie Woollard, a young Australian social entrepreneur, was moved by the plight of seven disabled women she met who were working out of a tin shed in Kathmandu. They were struggling to make a living and enduring harsh discrimination for their disabilities. Stephanie founded the fairtrade organisation Seven Women in 2006 to empower marginalized Nepalese women. Over 1,000 women have been trained and employed, and have been able to positively impact their communities. We follow the stories of several women each representing a different challenge women face in Nepalese society domestic violence, discrimination, lack of education, poverty, young marriage, risk of human trafficking and exploitation. Anita - fearless leader of the Kathmandu centre. At a young age her father was murdered, as the eldest daughter, Anita had to financially support the family. With Seven Women, she is empowered to give women the tools to create transformative changes in their lives. Surya Maya - mother of 2, and domestic violence victim who seeks to escape her situation and gain citizenship rights for her children. Sandhya - in her 20's, born with a disability that causes abnormal bone development. Facing discrimination, she would hide her face behind a mask when in public. She dreams of being able to teach women to read and write. Pushpa, -16, lives in the poverty stricken district of Nuwakot, where illiteracy rates are high, and many women have been trafficked. Her father wants to marry her off, yet she is determined to finish her education. The social isolation these women have endured is sadly, common and felt by all Nepalese women at different stages of life. The story speaks very strongly to sisterhood and what can be achieved when an individual takes a courageous leap to reach out to another and the ripple effect it can have. Over the years we watch the women transform, as they break free from deep cultural beliefs that have limited them all their lives. This film shows that real and lasting change is possible when humans unite to stand up to injustice. It examines civic courage, as each character challenges what society dictates they are capable of doing.
