1 Lion Amy Higgins, Editor DISTRICT 14 L LIONS NEWS Message from District Governor Gerald Chapman August 2013 Fellow Lions, Lioness, and Leos First Lady Lion Sue and I have returned from Hamburg Germany encouraged by the experience of meeting with Lions from around the world. The service provided by Lions everywhere, including the USA is remarkable. Those who helped or attended the District 14L Popeye Fleck Fishing Derby and Lions Appreciation Day at PA Lions Beacon Lodge Camp experienced some of the remarkable work being done right here in our district. Consider additional donations to Beacon Lodge as the state funding of $125,000 was discontinued and the Lions have to step up to fill that gap. Clubs should have received the District 14L directory. Check your visitation date and let me know if changes are necessary. The journey into District Governor was short and some things will be corrected as we go. Changes will be posted in the newsletter as they are received. Cabinet Secretary PDG Kathy is keeping record of them. Motivation, Participation, Leadership. Those are the issues that are recurring from club level to Lions International. Try to live up to the agreement you made when joining a Lions Club. Conduct your service in the manner you would want to happen if you were on the receiving end. Leadership training, Cabinet Meetings, Zone Meetings and Socials, Fall Rally, District Convention, Beacon Lodge events.. Think positive, participate, and you will be motivated. Why don't you participate? Let me know. When a PDG asks you to come along to a cabinet meeting - say yes. It is encouraging to the chairs and leaders of the district to have fellow Lions, Lioness, and Leos in attendance at the functions. Don't be a Lion spectator, be a participant. You can't get the same experience watching a sport, hunting, fishing, or hearing about service, as you do by taking part in the event. It is up to YOU. Yours in Lionism, DG Gerald DG Gerald Chapman with First Lady Sue at pin ceremony in Hamburg, Germany (left) & officially becoming our DG as PDG Larry Edwards removes his ribbon (right).

2 Message from 1 st VDG Anna Our District Cabinet and Banner exchange was held at Shade Gap on Sunday, July 14th. We witnessed the exchange of the District banner from IPDG Bill Higgins and the Bedford Lions Club to the new District Governor, Gerald Chapman, and the Blair s Mills Lions Club members. Our new 2 nd VDG Mike Brown of the Three Springs Lion Club was presented the International Presidents certificate of Appreciation and received his Guiding Lions Certificate from IPDG Bill Higgins. Let s thank IPDG Bill for his year of service and congratulate DGE Gerald for taking the challenge of the office of District Governor. What a great time we had at the Popeye Fleck Fishing Derby! As a Lion this event makes your heart feel good to see those young people enjoying catching those fish, and knowing for some it was their first time there and their first time fishing. This was a dream of a Lion of District 14L to start this project and we as lions need to continue to achieve its success. You can view some photos of the trophy winners, and the help as well as some nice fish on our District web site. Our new international president Barry Palmer s theme this year is FOLLOW YOUR DREAM. Every Lion and Club should identify what their own goal is for them or their clubs, and then work to achieve this goal or dream, whether it is a personal one or something you would like to achieve this year as a member or club president or something you would like to see happen within your club. It is never too late to FOLLOW YOUR DREAM through our motto, WE SERVE. Yours in Lionism, Anna Clark Corrections to p. 35 Bellwood-Antis Club meets 1 st Thursday at Bellwood-Antis Public Library Main Street, Bellwood p. 43 Orbisonia President Donald Rothermel p. 48 PDG Murray Laite: mwlaite@comcast.net p.49 Ole Bill McLaughlin M p. 51 Rothermel, Donald 533 Ridgley Street PO Box 127 Orbisonia, PA H M rothermeld@embarqmail.com p. 52 Janet Snyder: gsnyder@comcast.net Donna Wagner: Donadee247@yahoo.com Rodger Wagner: Rodgerjr445@yahoo.com Wagners phone #: Message from 2 nd VDG Michael 2 *Have you noticed a misprint in the Directory? Send corrections to amysunfire@earthlink.net Thank you for electing me to be your 2 nd VDG. I m honored to be able to continue to serve Lions at the next level. PDG Bill Higgins graciously allowed me to attend the Advance (Senior) Lions Leadership Institute, where I gained valuable knowledge, resources, and experiences, giving me the confidence to step up and start the path to becoming your District Governor in I also want to give a special Thanks to all the PDGs that offered to help and assist me as needed. This reinforces that Lions do serve, not only in the community, but also their fellow Lions. DG Gerald has set his goals for this year. We should do our part to not only meet, but exceed, his goals. I ll be giving him my full support to make his year a success. This leads me to remind everyone that a new year is upon us and we have many opportunities to serve. Each club should look at DG Gerald s goals for this coming year, look at the newsletter for projects to get involved in, look for ways to make a difference in your community, check within your own club for project interests, or ask other Lions clubs if they have projects that could use some assistance - never stop looking for ways to serve. It s the responsibility of every Lion to ask new people to become members so we continue to grow. If every member gets 1 new member, imagine how much more we could do. In conclusion, remember that LCI has a vast amount of valuable information at your fingertips. Visit it has helped me become a more confident and educated Lion enabling me to better serve my fellow man. Let s make a difference! Yours in Lionism, Michael Brown

5 TAKE A LIONS CHALLENGE In honor of our Lady Lions and Lionesses, we are asking all Clubs to participate in raising funds for breast cancer research. The Burnham Lions Club is challenging all District 14-L Lions Clubs to participate in this very important endeavor. October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and we are raising funds to donate to the Pennsylvania Pink Zone. The Pennsylvania Pink Zone ( promotes cancer awareness and empowers survivors through year-round efforts to raise funds critical in supporting vital breast cancer organizations, charities, and facilities that focus on breast cancer education, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. All monies collected stay within Pennsylvania. The donations go to six (6) Pennsylvania institutions: Mount Nittany Medical Center, Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute, PA Breast Cancer Coalition, Kay Yow Cancer Fund, J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital, and Lewistown Hospital. The Burnham Lions Club is sponsoring a Breakfast for Breast Cancer on October 26, 2013, and we are asking all clubs in District 14-L to find their own unique way to help us raise funds in October so that our Lions Clubs can make a significant contribution to defeating breast cancer. 9 President's Message Just beyond the modest home I grew up in Australia was the bush, where kangaroos, wallabies and kookaburras roamed amid gum and waddle trees. My father, Jack, was an accountant who took the same train to work and sat in the same seat day after day. I trained to be a wool classer, rotely producing wool. But I dreamt of doing something more influential. So I eventually went into real estate and built up my business. As a Lion I also dreamt of making a big impact. So when a young Australian woman spoke to our club about an orphanage she worked at in India, my club dove right in. The parents of many of these children had been killed by rebels. We helped get them better housing, and from that point many thrived in school. For years I had another dream I kept to myself. I saw the remarkable ability of Lions to change lives, and I wanted to fully devote myself to Lions. The dream came true a few years ago when I learned I was to be nominated for international president. Lions, follow your dreams. They will not lead you astray. Nearly every great accomplishment began as a wildly ambitious dream whether it was landing a man on the moon, running a four-minute mile or webbing together the entire world through computers. Listen to your heart. Don t ever impede a great idea whose time has come. To me, dreams are not visions that arise in sleep but plans that don t let you sleep. Identify your dream and work to achieve it. It s up to you to decide what your dream is. Plant the seed and let it grow. Find inspiration and guidance from other clubs and from Lions Clubs International. As I like to say, don t tell me to aim for the stars when there are footprints on the moon. Anne and I look forward to you Following Your Dream in Good luck, godspeed and congratulations excellence is the inevitable result of pursuing dreams. Barry J. Palmer 9

11 Project Peace Poster Contest Our World, Our Future An Annual Art Contest for Kids "Children Know Peace" Grand Prize Winner Promoting the Arts Each year, Lions clubs around the world proudly sponsor the Lions International Peace Poster Contest in local schools and youth groups. This art contest for kids encourages young people worldwide to express their visions of peace. For 25 years, more than eight million children from nearly 100 countries have participated in the contest. The theme of the Peace Poster Contest is "Our World, Our Future." Students, Each year's art contest for kids consists of an original theme incorporating peace. Participants use a variety of mediums, including charcoal, crayon, pencil and paint, to express the theme. The works created are unique and express the young artists' life experiences and culture. Spreading Peace and International Understanding Twenty-four international Peace Poster entries are selected each year, representing the work of approximately 400,000 young participants worldwide. Posters are shared globally via the Internet, the media and exhibits around the world. Peace Poster Contest Judging Each poster is judged on originality, artistic merit and expression of the theme. Posters advance through several judging levels: local, district, multiple district and international. At the international level, judges from the art, peace, youth, education and media communities select one grand prize winner and 23 merit award winners. Peace Poster Contest Awards International winners will be notified on or before February 1. One international grand prize winner will receive US$5,000 and a trip to a special award ceremony with the sponsoring club president and two family members at Lions Day with the United Nations (subject to change). Each of the 23 merit award winners will receive a cash award of US$500 and a certificate of achievement. Deadlines posted on LCI website for winning poster entries are final postmark deadlines. Our specific district deadlines will be set next month once judging date is selected. Club poster winners might be due as early as November 1 st to be included in district judging, so clubs should select their winner by the end of October. Check September newsletter for District 14L Peace Poster Deadlines. 11
