This spring I have finally been able to take the class. As I write, we have experienced what may be the first few days of spring. The weather has warmed a bit and it s tempting to get my hands in the dirt. Recently, our gardening class spent a day learning about pruning fruit trees, and as luck would have it, we were able to spend part of a beautiful, early spring Saturday afternoon actually practicing what we had learned on some trees in La Grande. A group of at least twenty people were learning to prune, and because we were only working on two trees, many of us were watching others prune. As I watched, the diversity of the group struck me. Over the past few months, I have written about our challenge to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills in our students. Yet another challenge is to develop life-long learners. I used to consider this a bit of a luxury. However, when I reflect upon our changing economy, I have come to realize that it s more of a necessity. On the website payscale.com, I came across an article from August 2017 that reported, Sixty-five percent of children entering primary school now will ultimately work in a job that doesn t exist today. If we are to prepare students for their future, we will best serve them if we develop a desire to continue to learn. You may be wondering what life-long learning has to do with the Master Gardening program. I mentioned earlier the diversity of the pruning group. Much of the diversity is in the age of the learners. I would guess some are in their twenties and some are in their seventies. My guess is that the majority are over sixty. What a great example set for children, grandchildren, friends and neighbors! Your interest may not be gardening. Perhaps your interest lies in hunting, fishing, learning a musical instrument or new language or a new craft. Continuing to learn keeps your brain elastic and working. It keeps you young. Be an example for the young people in your life by continuing to learn!

2 FFA NEWS By Chloe Birkmaier, Chapter Reporter I hope you all have been enjoying this warm weather! February and March were definitely great months for our FFA chapter, and we are looking forward to many more to come. On February 28th, the Joseph FFA Chapter hosted the 2018 District Convention. Seven Imbler members attended, and all did great. Congratulations to the following competitors for their accomplishments: Derek Thompson Winner of co-op quiz and winner of $500 scholarship Sam Fesseler Winner of beef placement proficiency Ryan Patterson Second place grain production proficiency Chloe Birkmaier District Vice President elect Our chapter secretary s book placed first, our treasurer s book and digital scrapbook placed second, and our scrapbook placed third. March 17th was the annual Drive for Your School, where members were given the opportunity to raise money for FFA trips or gear. March 23rd-26th was the 2018 State FFA Convention that was held in Redmond, Oregon for the second year in a row. All attendees had a blast, and it was another successful year at state! There were three competitors who gave speeches, two proficiency competitors, and Derek Thompson was our state officer candidate. In addition, members were able to attend educational workshops that were put on by agriculture experts and state officers from other states. Important date to remember: April 28 is the Imbler FFA Chapter Banquet. Everyone is welcome to attend for a free meal, silent auction, and a fun filled evening! We would love to see you all there! 3 NHS NEWS By Karrington Troyer, Publicity Director As we enter spring time, our NHS chapter has had a lot of exciting events taking place. As the weather warms up, we will be hosting more outdoor lunch activities so students can get out and enjoy the sunshine after a long cold winter. For community service hours, we have been assisting PAC with stuffing Easter eggs for our annual Easter egg hunt. Our members also went over to the elementary and read books to the K-2nd grade for Dr. Seuss Day. Coming up we will be having a powder puff football game on April 20. The time is TBA so stay tuned for more information! A NOTE FROM THE NURSE By Deena Reed, RN More than 90% of child sexual abuse is committed by someone known to the victim? 34.2 % were abused by family members 58.7% were abused by acquaintances, e.g., neighbors, friends of the family and respected community members. 30% of sexual abuse is never reported. Talk to your children today about their safety and help prevent child sexual abuse. Source: U.S. Department of Justice, Missing and Exploited Children, RAINN.org and Child Sex Abuse Prevention and Protection Center, Stopitnow.org Panther Card Fundraiser Results PAC/BOOSTER UPDATE By the time this newsletter goes out, we will have pretty much wrapped up our Panther Card Fundraiser. This has turned out to be one of our most successful fundraisers of the year. In past years, students have sold nearly 1,000 cards and earned close to $10, % of these proceeds benefit our students and their programs and activities such as; 3rd & 8th Camp Hancock Trip, OMSI Trip, Outdoor School, FBLA, National Honor Society, Volleyball and Girl s & Boy s Basketball programs. We still have some cards available, so if you didn t get one or know someone who would like one, contact either the high school or elementary office. Thank you for your continued support of our kids!! Upcoming Events Spring has sprung and with it comes a variety of activities. Mark your calendar for the upcoming events sponsored by PAC: April 6th Enchanted Evening Dance & VIP Movie Night 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm While the girls go dancing, the boys can come relax with free popcorn, water and a movie in the high school gym. Pop and candy will be available for purchase. May 7th - May 10th Teacher Appreciation Week Don t forget to take the time to show our teachers/staff how much they means to us! 7 FBLA NEWS By Madeline Hale, Publicity Director FBLA Showcase and Dinner On March 21st, Imbler s FBLA students put on a showcase and dinner. The event was held in the Elementary gym. Students performed throughout the evening. In between the performances there was a dinner auction and silent auction to help support FBLA students going to the state competition. State FBLA FBLA State is April 4th-7th! This is coming up very soon. Please have your FBLA children practice for FBLA and have all their projects finished before leaving.
