The hashtag theme, #IclusioWorks, is iteded to ecourage idividuals ad groups to post images ad stimulate discussio o social media about the may ways iclusio works. At The Arc of Sa Diego, our programs, Arc Commuity Employmet Services (ACES) ad Arc Eterprises, have successfully created employmet opportuities for more tha 641 idividuals with disabilities. We are proud of our staff ad their commitmet to helpig people with disabilities fid employmet. He bega work as a Courtesy Clerk at VONS i La Mesa but after 11 years, the store was bought by Hagge. Bill was laid off i 2015 whe Hagge closed all its Souther Califoria stores. His exemplary work ethic led to his beig rehired by VONS o Missio Gorge Road. Bill works 20 hours a week i shifts of four to six hours. Duties iclude baggig groceries, helpig customers with carry-out services, collectig carts from the parkig lot, doig price checks, restockig ad reshelvig products, sweepig ad moppig floors, cleaig up spills, ad providig customer service. Bill loves his job, kows most customers by first ame, ad gets alog well with his co-workers. Accordig to his supervisor, "Bill is a great guy. He is very good with customers." A sports ethusiast, Bill plays baseball ad was a Pop Warer football coach. He ofte goes bowlig with his co-workers. He wats everyoe to kow that his job helps him feel like part of the commuity. 6 Barbara Maizie Memorial Scholarship The Arc of Sa Diego has established the Barbara Maizie Memorial Camp Scholarship. Durig her lifetime, Barbara Maizie, Executive Director of Cotra Costa Arc, was a drivig force behid the developmetal disabilities movemet i Califoria, ispirig ad ecouragig through good ad tough times. For three decades, Barbara gave her time, talet, ad eergy to help childre ad adults with developmetal disabilities flourish i Cotra Costa. She was committed to protectio of the Laterma Act, iformig families of their rights ad takig legislators who tried to defud it to task. Barbara recetly passed away ad, i a effort to recogize her cotributios to idividuals with disabilities throughout our state ad all she accomplished, we are pleased to hoor ad remember Barbara with this scholarship fud. Startig i 2017, idividuals will be able to apply for a scholarship for campers to atted The Arc of Sa Diego s Summer Camp. The goal of the program is to bridge the gap" betwee educatio ad practice by supportig studet urses before they trasitio ito their ew professioal role. The collaboratio has prove to be mutually rewardig. Studet urses i their seior year complete service hours at Arc locatios ad gai practical hads-o experiece. Groups of 5-6 studets toured The Sol ad Ruth Gerber Family Ceter i Chula Vista ad meet with staff ad cliets i the Seior, Commuity-based, ad Activity Ceter programs. They retur for five cosecutive Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. to observe, assess, discuss fidigs, ad make recommedatios for a health educatio pla. Emphasizig the importace of takig greater cotrol over their health ad maagig chroic coditios, cliets are screeed for visio, blood pressure, ad height/weight. Teachig topics iclude utritio, diet, weight maagemet, exercise, fall prevetio, safety, ad oral ad persoal hygiee. Cliets have a good rapport with studets, ejoyig talkig ad Zumba dacig with them! Iformatio reviewed with staff covers lifestyle-related issues ad risk factors for heart attack, stroke, ad diabetes. Namaste Every Thursday, Dr. Paul Kurti, fouder ad medical director of Our Place a welless ad fitess ceter at North Shores Vocatioal Ceter teaches chair yoga, a getle form of yoga specifically for people i wheelchairs ad those who caot stad for log periods. The class has betwee participats ad rus 45 miutes. Dr. Kurti, a practitioer of yoga sice 1968, has adapted a sequece of poses ad breathig techiques to meet studet eeds ad objectives. While seated o chairs, studets do simple twists ad stretches, mild forward beds ad light backbeds. As a result, they ejoy improved muscle toe, better balace ad breathig habits, a reductio i stress, ad sese of well-beig. Our Place, a 1,500 sq. ft. yoga studio filled wall-to-wall with yoga mats, is a peaceful, welcomig space. Keepig the comfort of studets i mid, small details ad modificatios, such as color-coded triagles o walls to idicate directio, are a importat cosideratio.
