1 Issue August 2017 DSB Weekly Christine White, Editor Dr. David Bohnenkamp Receives 2017 Collegiate Teaching Award Dr. David Bohnenkamp Receives 2017 Collegiate Teaching Award Initially, David Bohnenkamp was a University of Missouri undergraduate student with a major in Forestry. He switched to Biology after realizing that a career in Dentistry would allow him to combine my interests in science and my talents in engineering drawing and architectural design that I had developed during high school. He also became interested in teaching: I did consider a career in the Biological Sciences with an emphasis on Comparative Anatomy, as I enjoyed teaching undergraduate students as an assistant in the Biology dissection laboratory. After receiving his D.D.S. in 1979 from Iowa, Dr. Bohnenkamp served 16+ years in the U.S. Air Force Dental Corps and was stationed at Air Force bases in Louisiana, Ohio, Texas, Japan, and Colorado. During his second year as a U.S.A.F. general dentist, he attended a six-week prosthodontics short course in San Antonio, Texas. After the faculty had evaluated his clinical and laboratory work, they encouraged him to apply to their residency program, so he did. In 1987, Dr. Bohnenkamp received his M.S. and Certificate in Prosthodontics from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio School of Biomedical Sciences. Two years later, he became a diplomate of the American Board of Prosthodontics. Bohnenkamp, see 2 14 Dr. Kyungsup Shin Receives Two-Year, $99,424 Research Grant from AAOF Dr. Kyungsup Shin, Department of Orthodontics, has received an American Association of Orthodontists Foundation (AAOF) grant for his research, Carbonated Apatite Coated Gene-Activated Matrices for Enhanced Bone Tissue Regeneration. Dr. Shin is principal investigator for the two-year, $99,424 grant. Co-investigators include Dr. Aliasger Salem, College of Pharmacy; Dr. Liu Hong, Iowa Institute for Oral Health Research and Department of Prosthodontics; Dr. Deborah Dawson, Biostatistics and Research Design and Department of Pediatric Dentistry; and Dr. Thomas Southard, DEO of the Department of Orthodontics and Dr. Shin s career development mentor. As an alternative and promising approach to bone grafting, Dr. Shin will conduct research on the use of gene-activated matrices (GAMs) capable of non-viral-mediated gene delivery to enhance bone regeneration. The objectives of his proposed research project are to determine enhanced osteogenic differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells in vitro and to determine improved bone tissue regeneration at calvarial defect sites of a rodent animal model in vivo.
2 Page 2 Bohnenkamp, continued from 1 I enjoy prosthodontics, says Dr. Bohnenkamp, because I like to treatment plan, restore damaged teeth, and replace missing teeth by incorporating new and innovative techniques and materials. I especially like doing and teaching dental laboratory procedures to ensure that the highest quality of care will be provided to our patients. The military provided him with numerous training opportunities. During his first two years in the Air Force in Alexandria, Louisiana, he shared full-time duties as a specialist in each dental discipline with five other general dentists. He worked for the Office of the Inspector General in Wichita Falls, Texas, investigating a congressional inquiry at his last duty station, and also managed the laboratory support for 41 Air Force bases in the western and central U.S. and Alaska as Director of the Lowry Air Force Base Area Dental Laboratory in Denver, Colorado. In 1995, Dr. Bohnenkamp left the Air Force after receiving an early retirement offer and joined his wife, Dr. Lily Garcia, and their nine-month-old daughter, Julianne, in Denver, Colorado where she was Chair of the Restorative Dentistry Department at the University of Colorado Health Services Center Dental School. Because he was unable to serve as a full-time faculty at the small dental school, he joined a private dental office and practiced prosthodontics and family dentistry for six years in Louisville, Colorado. In 2001, Drs. Bohnenkamp and Garcia, with Julianne, moved to Texas where he served as a fulltime faculty member in the Department of General Dentistry at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio Dental School. Then in 2013, they were recruited to the University of Iowa College of Dentistry. Dr. Bohnenkamp is now is a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Family Dentistry; Dr. Garcia is Associate Dean for Education and Professor in the Department of Prosthodontics. Dr. David Holmes, Family Dentistry s DEO, describes Dr. Bohnenkamp s career as an admirable professional scholarly record. He served in a number of leadership roles in the U.S.A.F.; spent several years as a full-time private practitioner; and has served as a faculty member at the University of Colorado, the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio, and now at the University of Iowa. Dr. Bohnenkamp still enjoys teaching. I like teaching at all levels of academics but I especially enjoy teaching predoctoral dental students in the clinics during their junior and senior years. I approach predoctoral student teaching much more differently than postdoctoral resident teaching I have found that dental students need more hands-on demonstrations with both preclinical and clinical procedures. I also like to show dental students how they can problem solve prosthodontics problems and improve their dental skills at each level of training to achieve the best results in the most efficient and timely manner. His teaching activities have consistently drawn rave reviews from dental students, notes Dr. Holmes. (In 2016, Dr. Bohnenkamp was named D3 Instructor of the Year.) Michelle Burson (D4) offers her own personal testimonial: The class of 2018 has been truly lucky to have had Dr. Bohnenkamp as an instructor for all four years of dental school. He leads by example and always puts in the extra time to make sure each student understands and performs dentistry to the best of their ability. Dr. Bohnenkamp has a profound positive influence on each student he works with. He goes above and beyond as a teacher and makes everyone that works with him a better clinician. I know that I will be a great dentist, due in part to his dedication and patience throughout my education. Thank you, Dr. Bohnenkamp, you are so deserving of this award. He has also offered support as a junior faculty mentor. His experience and temperament make him an excellent fit for the Department of Family Dentistry, says Dr. Holmes. Dr. Bohnenkamp has enthusiastically assumed a role as mentor for junior faculty members in our department. He has offered all levels of support to help in their professional development. Such a mentoring contribution is invaluable to meeting the missions of the University and the future of the College of Dentistry. The College of Dentistry recognizes Dr. David Bohnenkamp s contributions and is pleased to give him the 2017 Collegiate Teaching Award.

4 Page 4 College of Dentistry Biorepository Employee Participation Event We invite you to participate in a data and sample repository because you are a University of Iowa employee. We will collect your clinical information (dental and medical) and saliva for researchers to use in the future, to study and learn more about dental conditions and diseases. The overall goal is to find causes, better treatments, and ways to prevent health conditions and diseases. Participation in this study is completely voluntary. Your decision to participate or not will in no way affect your academic or professional position with the University of Iowa. Approximately 20,000 people will take part in this study conducted by investigators at the University of Iowa. A container will be used to collect your saliva. It may take minutes for the ideal amount of saliva we need to be collected, but most participants usually take about 5 to 10 minutes. To participate, you must not eat or drink for 90 minutes prior to specimen collection. You will be given a choice of a $5.00 gift card or 4 hours of University of Iowa parking passes currently valued at $4.80 as compensation. We have set aside Monday, September 11, 2017 from 8 am to 3 pm in room 14D (outside of Galagan A), first floor of the College of Dentistry, for a special employee collection day. Please contact Karen Kluesner , Amber Marolf , or dentistry-biorepository@uiowa.edu for more information, or to schedule an appointment.
