Dr. Steven Aquilino Receives UI Council on Teaching Instructional Improvement Award Dr. Steven Aquilino, Department of Prosthodontics, received a UI Council on Teaching Instructional Improvement Award for $4,000. He will use the funds to create life-sized, three-dimensional models of ideal tooth preparations for all of the fixed prosthodontic preparation that the D2 students are required to complete during their preclinical fixed prosthodontic courses. Students will use these models, along with detailed evaluation criteria, to assess each example prior to preparing the tooth in a simulated environment. Current literature has demonstrated that novice students, who can learn recognition skills and effectively visualize the ideal outcome, will improve the quality of their performance when significant time is devoted to the development of these recognition skills. Dr. Aquilino anticipates that student performance, and their ability to self-evaluate, will be improved through this discrimination training, with emphasis on the formative assessment of an ideal product. Filling Station Announcements & Menu Recent Publications Lend a Hand to a Co-Worker Endo Adjunct s Daughter Wins 1st In Swimming Competition Making the Connection: Human Resources Volunteers Invited! 6 7 Dr. Philip Wertz Presents Frontier of Science Award Lecture Dr. Philip Wertz, Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology & Medicine, and Dows, recently presented the Society of Cosmetic Chemists (SCC) Frontier of Science Award Lecture during the organization s annual scientific meeting, which was held December 9-10, 2010, at the New York Hilton Hotel in New York City. Dr. Wertz s onehour presentation was titled, Stratum Corneum Lipid Composition and Structure in Relation to Barrier Function. The annual meeting of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists traditionally occurs in New York City one week after the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree goes up. 2 College of Dentistry Clinical Translational Researchers Continue Major Projects with Astra Tech Page 2 Representatives from Swedish company Astra Tech AB made a site visit to the College of Dentistry on December 9, The company, which develops, manufactures, and markets dental implants and medical devices, is sponsoring six current College of Dentistry clinical research projects. Two additional research projects are planned. 3 Attention Dental College Researchers: NIH Application Submission Changes Page 3 Application submission changes are coming in January Many NIH changes affecting application submissions are converging on the January 2, 2011 application receipt date, including the elimination of the error correction window, the new policy on post-submission application materials, the new time limit for resubmission application, and more. College of Dentistry Research Grants/Renewals in 2010 (Part 1) Dr. Daniel Caplan, Preventive & Community Dentistry: Equipment to Enhance Oral Health Care of Wheelchair-Bound and Homebound Patients. $32,910. Dr. Daniel Caplan, project director. Funded by HRSA. The one-year project will provide equipment to enhance senior dental extramural training on the Geriatric Mobile Unit. Dr. David Gratton, Prosthodontics: Prospective, Comparative Assessment of Single-tooth Replacement in Different Implant Abutment Interface Settings: Digital Scanning Analysis of Alveolar Ridge Architecture Alterations. $61,69. Dr. David Gratton, Prosthodontics, principal investigator; Associate Dean for Research Clark Stanford (also a professor in the Department of Prosthodontics), co-investigator. Funded by Astra Tech AB. The goal of this two-year grant will be to compare the buccal soft tissue changes occurring around single-tooth replacements in the maxilla using three different implant-abutment interface designs. Dr. Lina Moreno Uribe, Orthodontics and Dows Institute for Dental Research: Genetic Instrumental Variable Studies of Maternal Risk Behaviors for Oral Cleft. $2,948,874. Dr. Lina Moreno Uribe, Orthodontics and Dows, co-investigator (George Wehby, principal investigator). Funded by National Institutes of Health/DHHS. The goal of the thirty-month grant is to help identify the effects of several maternal risk behaviors during pregnancy, including smoking, alcohol and obesity on the risks of cleft lip and/or palate birth defects. Dr. Steven Levy, Preventive and Community Dentistry: Enhancing the University of Iowa Dental Public Health Educational Experience. $300,000. Dr. Steven Levy, principal investigator; Dr. Raymond Kuthy, Preventive & Community, co -investigator; Ms. Tina Craig, coordinator. Funded by the US Department of Health & Human Services, Health Resources & Services Administration. The goal of this nine-year training program grant is to enhance the quality of the Dental Public Health residency training program at the University of Iowa and support the didactic and practical experiences of the residents concerning the underserved and other high risk population groups, geriatrics, genetics, and cultural competency. Daughter of Endo Adjunct Breaks Luther College School Record in 100 Butterfly Erin Mykleby, daughter of Department of Endodontics adjunct faculty, Dr. Brian Mykleby, received a firstplace finish when the Luther College women s swimming team competed against the University of Minnesota s swim team. Dr. Mykleby s daughter achieved a new school record in the 100 butterfly by posting a time of 9.49, breaking the old record of 1: Erin also won the 200 freestyle and placed second in the 200 backstroke.

7 Page 7 UI and Palmer College Jaw Pain Study Invites Participants People age 21 or older with chronic jaw pain classified as temporomandibular disorder may be eligible to participate in a clinical research study investigating whether the Activator Chiropractic Technique can reduce head and neck pain and the need for prescription pain medications, and improve quality of life. The collaborative study involves the University of Iowa College of Dentistry, the UI Institute for Clinical and Translational Science's Dental Clinical Research Center, and the Palmer Center for Chiropractic Research at Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport. Study participants will be randomly assigned to one of four different treatment groups. Participation, including follow-up, will last six months and involves examinations and treatment at the UI Dental Clinical Research Center. Participants assigned to chiropractic care will be referred to a private practice in Coralville. All examinations and treatment are provided free of charge.
