Burton, Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, became the president of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS) September 23, This one-year commitment represents the seventh out of eight years of service with the ABOMS Board of Directors. The mission of ABOMS is to assure the public safety and optimal care through the development and maintenance of high standards of certification and re-certification of diplomates in the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery. Dr. Kirk Fridrich, DEO, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, notes that Dr. Burton should be congratulated on this distinguished professional achievement and for representing the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and UIHC in such an exemplary manner Drs. Cheryl Straub-Morarend, Family Dentistry, and Teresa Marshall, Preventive & Community Dentistry, have received the American Dental Association (ADA)/American Association for Dental Research (AADR) Evidence- Based Dentistry (EBD) Award. Said Dean Johnsen, This is exciting and much deserved after your decade-long work on EBD in general and especially on your pioneering work on giving student/ practitioners the skill sets to take the science/evidence to the patient. We all look forward to following your continuing work on this important subject! Drs. Straub-Morarend and Marshall will attend the EBD Champions Conference in Denver, Colorado, on October 19 and 20. The ADA will host an EBD awards reception where they will be presented a gift from Colgate to accompany their award.

2 Page 2 Dr. Dina Garcia Receives Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation Grant Dr. Dina Garcia, postdoctoral research fellow in the Iowa Institute for Oral Health Research, has received a one-year, $25,000 grant from the Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation. In Iowa, 65 of the 99 counties are dental health professional shortage areas (HPSA), where there are not enough dentists to adequately serve the population. The lack of access to routine and preventive dental care for underserved populations living in HPSAs is a critical public health problem due to the impact of untreated oral diseases on quality of life and an increase in emergency room healthcare-associated costs. In 2002, to improve the dental workforce supply in HPSAs, the Delta Dental of Iowa Loan Repayment Program was established, which offers participants a short-term monetary award to repay dental education debt in return for practicing in a designated HPSA and allocating 35 percent of patient services to underserved populations. In 2005, the program was expanded by creating the Fulfilling Iowa's Need for Dentists (FIND) Program, which collaborates with HPSA communities to establish private practicing dental offices located in rural, underserved areas of Iowa. Because of limited literature on the evaluation of these programs, Dr. Garcia will conduct an impact evaluation of the Delta Dental of Iowa Foundation's Fulfilling Iowa's Need for Dentists (FIND) Program using qualitative methods to better understand the direct and indirect impact that the FIND program has had at the community level. Ten in-depth interviews with FIND dentist participants and ten focus groups with stakeholders from their respective community placement sites will be conducted. Iowa Mission of Mercy Held September 23-24, 2016 in Dubuque, Iowa The 2016 Iowa Mission of Mercy (IMOM) was held September 23-24, 2016, in Dubuque, Iowa. There were 1,368 patient encounters and the preliminary amount of services given was $865,264 without medications. At least 11 CoD faculty, 14 residents, and 135 dental students volunteered their time. (A final figure for CoD staff volunteers was not available.) Every year the Iowa Dental Foundation formally thanks dentists, staff and dental students who volunteer for IMOM. This year, Lori Chalupa, Periodontics, was one of the volunteers who received a certificate thanking her for her leadership and contribution to the success of IMOM. Photo provided by Gwen Bradley. While Mariel and her team at the History Channel did not receive a statue, they were thrilled to be nominated in the category of Outstanding Short Form Nonfiction or Reality Series for Roots: A New Vision produced for the History channel. Mariel was the producer; this was her second Emmy nomination. Mariel brought a bit of history with her to the Emmy Award. The evening bag she is holding is a vintage purse loaned to Mariel by her grandmother, Rita Powers. Rita, now 93, was given the bag in the late 1930s by Mrs. Catherine (Kate) Connolly Arkins, an Irish immigrant who befriended Rita and her mother, Nellie Gannon, another Irish immigrant, in New York City. Kate Arkins was 23 years old when she boarded the Titanic in April She escaped the sinking with her three Irish friends on one of the few lifeboats available. Also saving a baby boy, she later reunited the child with his mother in England. Kate eventually made it to Manhattan and lived in New York until her death in The photo of Kate was taken around 1916.
