PAR Q + Par-Med X Consultation with GP, if needed In last session: Used components of `Measuring Functional Fitness in Older Adults`(back scratch, 2 min step test, 30 sec chair stand)*from Journal of Active Aging, March April 2002
Weather, road conditions Holidays affecting class numbers (Christmas, summer) Timing: other fitness programming in area (e.g. Tai Chi) Coordination between 2 different instructors on Tuesday and Thursday Participants weren`t necessarily available for the time slot available for their particular skill level Difficult to recruit volunteers from class to help in instruction (but progress has been made.) Measuring success in a quantifiable way Communicating with the group (few have s!) SUSTAINABILITY: availability of ongoing instructors
Flexibility of program: Adapt to meet different needs of participants Modify location depending on weather Take requests from class participants Consistency of Instructors & communication Able to raise money to purchase take-home therabands Distribution of free home exercise video recorded by a participant Able to facilitate purchase of over 3 dozen walking poles for home use Themed events were well attended Many positive testimonials Involvement of volunteers Progressive input from participants 92% of participants reported a positive impact on overall health
The first class, I was next to death. And then I ve been marching in the kitchen while cooking, now I can do it with ease. I can now hop something I haven t been able to do for years with arthritis. I really enjoyed the social time the laughter. These classes have helped us tremendously both physically and helping us get out in this really cold winter. Has motivated me to exercise more at home. I feel able and energetic! I can now life a full kettle without propping up my elbow. I have more energy, balance, stamina. My breathing is better, as well as my energy level. Between the classes and watching what we eat we have lost pounds and inches. Yahooooo! I really feel I m exerting myself and feel great doing so.
Link in with local University, volunteer base Connect with local media, generate awareness Provide participants with as much ownership as possible over programming Positive feedback from programming being run in Primary Care Facility Be creative think outside of the box Think long term how can this programming continue?
