3 Who we are Welcome to the wonderful world of University of Birmingham Sport (UBSport). You ve made a great choice of university, now it s time to ensure you make your time here the time of your life by getting involved with UBSport. Whatever your sporting interests or involvement, University life, especially at Birmingham, offers a unique opportunity to choose from a wide range of sports and activities, and to try something completely new. Team Jamaica, including world and Olympic champion sprinters Usain Bolt and Yohan Blake rated Birmingham as their best pre- Olympic training base to-date.

4 Active Lifestyle fitness classes There are Aerobic, Toning, Dance, Holistic, Aqua and Specialist exercise classes to choose from and they are suitable for all abilities. The emphasis is to exercise in a fun and friendly environment, which encourages people to join in, meet new friends, and find something that they enjoy doing. Choose from the following class types: Aerobic high energy classes to burn calories and improve cardiovascular fitness include Body Attack and Boxercise Toning tone and sculpt your body with classes such as Body Pump, Abs and LBT Tone Holistic reduce life s little stresses and work on flexibility with Pilates and different types of Yoga Dance if want to try something really different or learn some new moves whilst getting fit at the same time try Zumba, Hula or Bokwa Aqua low impact Aerobics and Zumba classes, using the water as a resistance tool Specialist courses dedicated to lower back pain and ladies only free weight classes. Get advice, treatment and fitness tips from qualified staff

5 Membership and services The Munrow Sports Centre at the University s main Edgbaston Campus is the hub of UBSport, where many indoor facilities are based and where you can find out how to get involved. 6 Sporty fun try sport give it a go Intra Mural Sport (IMS) If you re looking for some competitive team fun but don t want the commitment of regular training, Intra Mural Sport is definitely for you. Choose from the following sports: Mixed badminton Men s basketball Men s 6-a-side football Women s 6-a-side football Men s 11-a-side football Mixed hockey Mixed netball Our selection of sport courses offers everybody the chance to get involved and try new things. If there is a sport you ve always wanted to try, this is the place to do it! Get involved in a fun and friendly atmosphere and introduce yourself to the world of sport. Aikido Badminton Basketball Boxing Golf Learn to swim Self defence Squash and racketball Swim strokes Tennis Trampolining Volleyball Weightlifting You can sign up with a group of friends, department, team from your halls or join an existing team. The emphasis is on playing for fun there s no better way to be active, socialise and enjoy yourself.

7 Outdoor pursuits in the Lake District Get away from city living for an action packed weekend of adventure in some of England s most beautiful scenery. The university has it s very own outdoor pursuits centre in the Lake District. Get away for an action packed weekend of adventure in a range of activities including: mountain biking canoeing sailing windsurfing rock climbing mountain walking gorge walking high and low rope courses Weekend prices are 95 and include transport from campus, accommodation, breakfast and lunch. Dates for are: Friday 29 November Sunday 1 December 2013 Friday 14 February Sunday 16 February

8 Playing with Pride We re incredibly proud of being a top three sporting university in the British Universities and Colleges (BUCS) league. 10 Performance Sport Hi Performance Centre We re passionate about enhancing your sporting performance. That s why our team of expert staff work with our clubs and teams to provide a world-class support service in the following disciplines: Sports science: Physiological support Sports nutrition Sports psychology Strength and conditioning Sports medicine: Sports doctor Isokinetic assessments Sports massage Physiotherapy All club members can access our services free of charge in the following ways: weekly circuits and recovery sessions sports yoga classes sports nutrition and psychology workshops. Use our physiotherapy led triage assessment service in case of injury Scholarships We currently support around 150 scholars and 20 performance sport awardees reach their academic and sporting potential per year. Our scholarship programme is consistently rated as one of the best in the UK. Worth up to 6000 Contributing to expenses: Sports medicine/science Travel Equipment Full gym and swim membership Lifestyle support and workshops Scholarships are awarded annually via an application process. Also offered are sports team scholarships, department bursaries, R&A golf scholarships. University of Birmingham is also the West Midlands Hub for the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) network. The University also offers 20 Sports Performance Awards, worth 3,000 each, over 3 years of academic study.
