4 PRESIDENT S REPORT Our last guest speaker Duncan Lapsley was one of the most interesting speaker we have had for a long time. Speaking on the construction of Barangaroo. Emma Humphries and Ramiz Khan our RYLA attendees updated us on their recent camp and what they gain from attending RYLA. This week we will be meeting at the Concourse at Chatswood to see what goes on behind the scenes and following we will have a meal at a Chinese Restaurant in Westfield. Tuesday morning 27th Richard Green, Ted Anderson, Sue Ward and myself held a meeting with a Task Force from Chatswood Rotary club to discuss the possibilities of an amalgamation. Chatswood are facing the same problems as us in falling membership numbers, an ageing membership, difficulties in attracting new members and reduced enthusiasm of members in participation in club activities. Dates to remember; Bunnings BBQ on the 4th March, District Convention 10th and 11th March and the Theatre night to see Seniors Moments at the Concourse on the 3rd March. I will have the balance of tickets to hand out on Tuesday night, 27th February. I am holding tickets for Richard Green, David Brand, Ted Anderson and Grant Campbell. President Peter. 2

7 NOT QUITE PYEONGCHANG - but a GREAT STORY The Snr Howie s brush with fame! This photo taken today (16 February 2018) with Nancy Greene as she celebrated 50 years to the day since she won gold at the Grenoble Winter Olympics for Canada. She is the most natural, charming lady you could wish to meet. Wish her skiing ability was contagious!!! at Sun Peaks Resort Canada. SENIOR MOMENTS For all those who are going, dont forget SATURDAY 3 March 2018 at 7.30 pm. Concourse, Victoria Avenue, Chatswood 5
8 FUN RUN MEETING; 6 MARCH 2018 INVITE FROM NORM GIBSON Mike Harrowell has suggested that we liaise with the local schools in an effort to increase the participants in our fun run. Let us get behind him and give it a go. NOW!!! At last week s meeting it was agreed to form a committee. Sir Humphry often advised the Minister, Jim Hacker, to do that to make the problem go away but that will not happen with this idea. I mentioned that I have two family members with children currently attending local schools and we should ask for their suggestions. Both of them have agreed and we will be meeting at the home of one of them to initiate our plans. PLEASE REFER TO NORM S OF 20 FEBRUARY TO ALL MEMBERS, FOR MEETING LOCATION INFORMATION Other details are; DATE; TIME; Tuesday 6th March 7.30 pm 6 A few of our members put up their hand to join the committee (but no one took down their names). However I would like to see a large enthusiastic group attend the first meeting and not just those who indicated they were prepared to help. If it is agreed to make a personal approach to many of the teachers we will need as many people as possible to help. Please phone me and confirm that you will be attending. Do not leave it to others. Regards Norm (Some Refreshments may be provided by Norm as per his .)

This is a Conference you do not want to miss with this being one of the six Rotary Peace Conferences to be held across the globe. The Conference Program includes keynote lecturers and presentations from international and national leaders in the industries of Economic and Community Development and Peace. Delegates will hear about the underlying causes of conflict including poverty, disease, lack of water and food security and the lack of education from our inspirational and stimulating speakers. 8 FOR PROGRAM AND REGISTRATION DETAILS VISIT

SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING CHALLENGE 8th MAY MAY VOLUNTEERS REQUIRED Rotarians across Sydney are needed to support this exciting youth program. Year 10 students compete in teams to solve science and engineering puzzles. Your role would be to supervise them as they work. A science/technology background is useful but not vital. More important is a willingness to engage with intelligent and highly motivated students. Full details and further information on the following page. 9

You will be sent all the necessary briefing materials. Can I ask you to spread the word around your own Clubs and encourage others to take part. 13 DISTRICT CONFERENCE ATTENDANCE John HARTLEY Co-ordinating REGISTRATION CLOSES - 2 MARCH On the following pages are details about the District Conference. John Hartley is co-ordinating the attendance of members from our Club. Following is a message from John; Fellow RCRC members, You may recall I made an offer to hire and drive a mini bus for club members to be transported to and from the conference in March. We would have needed about 10 members or 20 couples to make this transport method viable and all attendees going by mini bus would have had to registered for the 2 day event with accommodation booked for a 2 night stay. A few members indicated to me that they would attend the 2 days but the number were insufficient for bus hire so that was ruled out. Some members are registered for Saturday only and are are avoiding accommodation charges. i.e. travelling up and back in the one day. PE Richard Green advised me that accommodation at the Fairmont is no longer available i.e. booked out. If you intend to attend and have booked alternate accommodation, Richard may wish to join those who have booked elsewhere. Would those members who are going to the conference please respond by to me, with the following Are you attending with your partner? Is your conference booking for 1 or 2 days? Are you staying overnight for 1 or 2 days (or longer)? Where will your stay be (Fairmont or other accommodation)? From the information I receive I will prepare a list so those attending will know details as to the movements of fellow members during the conference. Regards, John Hartley 11
