5 The participants will be able to: Title: Differential Diagnosis, Evaluation, and Management of the Hip Complex John Christoforetti, MD and Benjamin R. Kivlan, MS, PT, SCS, OCS, CSCS Course Description: The purpose of this course is to define the common anatomical and biomechanical mechanisms of injury to the hip complex as it relates to a review of current literature. The course content will describe the pathogenesis of hip joint disease and related pathologies. Current evidence in the examination of the hip complex will be explored to offer the best management practices of physical examination and functional testing of the hip complex. Current methods of conservative and surgical management of hip disease will also be discussed with the intent of establishing evidencebased treatment guidelines in consideration of both short and long-term health of patients with hip-related pathology. Learning Objectives: Apply current evidence of anatomical and biomechanical relationships to evaluation, differential diagnosis, and management of pathology to the hip complex. Prioritize a systematic examination that can be used to differentiate musculoskeletal from nonmusculoskeletal pathologies. Develop and apply an evaluation algorithm to allow for a classification-based treatment program for those with musculoskeletal pain to the hip complex. Create an intervention program consisting of mobilization, soft-tissue techniques, and innovative exercises based on patient classification. Determine appropriate referral recommendation for those with non-musculoskeletal related pain. Sunday, April 6, 2014 Title: PT Maintenance of Specialty Certification Tamara Gravano, DPT, GCS, CEEAA Course Description: This course will answer the questions posed by many physical therapists about obtaining and maintaining clinical specialty certification. Information regarding the specialty examination including preparation for will be presented. Changes to the recertification process went into effect last year and will be explained. Time will be available for questions. Learning Objectives: Discuss the elements of clinical specialization Recognize the eligibility requirements for clinical specialization Understand the specialization examination process Understand the current changes to the process of recertification, now known as Maintenance of Specialty Certification Title: A Multi-Disciplinary Approach to the Treatment of Dementia Andrea Martell, MPT and Jennifer Allman, SLP

6 Course Description: This course will promote understanding of the stages of dementia and focus on the interaction of multiple disciplines to enhance functional outcomes. The course is designed to address both treatment ideas and evaluative requirements to enhance knowledge of dementia for both the PT and the PTA. Other topics addressed include documentation, goal progression, and medications for the dementia population. Learning objectives: Identify the stages of dementia according to the global deterioration scale (GDS) Identify behavioral and functional performance changes throughout the dementia disease process that correlate to the GDS stages of dementia. Identify disciplines specific ( PT/OT/ST) treatment intervention approaches based on the stage of dementia. Identify different components of delirium, dementia and depression Title: Functional Movement Screening Course Description: Learning objectives: Title: Interpreting Lab Values: Treating Patients Not Numbers Anne Swisher, PT, PhD, CCS Course Description: Laboratory tests are important for determining appropriate physical therapy management of patients in a variety of settings. This course will review common laboratory values and the implications for patient care, with a focus on interpreting values in the context of risk vs. benefit of intervention. Learning objectives: Describe how laboratory tests assess function of body systems and homeostasis. Discuss implications of laboratory values that fall outside of normal ranges. Interpret laboratory values in the context of patient cases, determining risk of physical therapy intervention vs. risk of immobility. Title: Evidence-Based Approaches to Using Outcome Measures Saurabh Mehta, PT, PhD Course Description: The course will introduce evidence-based knowledge in selecting, administering, scoring, and interpreting outcome measures in daily clinical practice. The course will also introduce the key elements of using outcome measures for goal setting and communicating with third party funding agencies. By the end of this course, clinicians will demonstrate adequate expertise in successfully integrating outcome measures in their own practice. Learning objectives: Consistent with the International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF), explores the strategies in selecting suitable outcome measures for clinical practice. Identify different types of outcome measures and their unique contribution to patient assessment.

7 All you need to know about the psychometric properties of an outcome measure Steps involved in using outcome measures in clinical practice Using different case vignettes, participants will divide in groups and answer following questions: 1. How confident we can be in a single score of a measure? 2. Does score on measure discriminate disability level? 3. How to interpret change on a follow-up assessment? 4. How should we incorporate outcome measures in goal setting? Title: Residency Education for Future Specialists Tamara Gravano, DPT, GCS, CEEAA Course Description: This course is intended for students who are interested in learning more about the specialization process, specifically through post professional PT residency programs. The application process has changed, and now with a centralized application service, students have access to a greater number of residency programs than ever before. Information regarding the examination process will also be provided. Time will be available for questions at the end. Learning objectives: Discuss the elements of clinical specialization Define the difference between residency and fellowship Understand the residency application process Understand the specialization examination process Third Annual Peer Reviewed Poster Presentations on Sunday, April 6, 2014 We are pleased to announce the third annual peer reviewed Physical Therapy Poster Presentation for the state of West Virginia. WVPTA is pleased to provide this poster and research opportunity for faculty, students and clinicians and hope that we can broaden our knowledge through continued research and education. The posters will be on display Sunday morning during the conference from 8:00 am 12:00 pm. The presenters will be available from 10:00-10:45 a.m. at their poster for Q&A/discussion. Fun Events to Raise Money Through the course of the conference there will be fund raising events to support the WVPT PAC and the student scholarship fund. Conference Location The Stonewall Resort in Roanoke, WV is located just 2 miles off Interstate 79 at exit 91 and is accessible from all major metropolitan areas within a 4-hour driving radius. Stonewall Resort is a little over one hour north of Charleston, WV and 2 hours south of Pittsburgh, PA. By car take the Roanoke exit (91) from I-79 and follow the signs to Stonewall Resort. Go to and click on driving directions for more detailed information.

8 Lodging Reservations There are a limited number of rooms being held at the Stonewall Resort at $210 single occupancy and $153 per person, double occupancy. This rate includes two meals per day starting with dinner on the night of arrival and ending with lunch the day of departure, morning and afternoon break food. This rate does not include the daily resort fee or taxes. The resort fee is a daily, per room fee of $15.00 that includes onsite parking, in-park shuttle service, high speed internet access and WIFI, use of fitness equipment, indoor/outdoor pool, sauna, steam room, paddle boats, canoes, kayaks, excursion boat, mountain bikes, basic fishing equipment and many other amenities. Please call the in-house reservations department at to make your room reservation. In order to ensure the contracted room rates at the time of the call, attendees must identify themselves as being part of West Virginia Physical Therapy Association. Reservations should be made no later than March 4, Individuals will need to provide a credit card upon check in. What the Hotel Registration Fee Covers: This includes two meals per day starting with dinner on the night of arrival and ending with lunch the day of departure, continental breakfast and afternoon break food in the foyer and selected resort activities. What Your Room Rate Pays for at Stonewall Resort In order for everyone to understand what the overnight room charge pays for and what each individual is responsible for, the following rules apply. The conference plan begins with dinner on night of arrival and ending with lunch on day of departure. Hotel Rate/Night Single Meeting Attendee: $210 per person, per night attending the conference Spouse Attendee: $60 per person, per night for spouse (not attending the conference workshops, but eating breakfast, lunch, dinner or reception on the property). **Stonewall reservation desk will issue Spouse tickets for these meals when you check into the resort.
