1 Winona Lions Club NEWS LETTER October 2007 Our motto is We Serve LION PAUL SCHUMACHER, PRESIDENT In October we will celebrate our 30th anniversary as the Winona Sunset Lions Club. We have six charter members in out club: Lions Bob Andraschko, Bob Bambenek, Bill Clark, Gary Evans, Don Peterson, and Dave Ziegeweid. We hope that these six will be able to attend this celebration. The District Governor will be making his annual visit to our Club at this meeting, and will participate in the celebration. Lets have a big turn out of our Sunset Lions Sunset From the pen of our president... members. Our celebration meal will be Italian, hopefully with lasagna and spaghetti with the all trimmings. We are gearing up for the Floyd Bischel Chili Supper, which will be held on Thursday, December 13th. We lost our revenue producer during The District Governor Clair Mrotek is coming to our Thursday, October 11th meeting! When you receive your tickets, please get out and sell like Floyd did, with enthusiasm. Lions Bill Clark and Dennis Van Drunen are spearheading GREAT MEAL ITALIAN NIGHT WITH ALL THE TRIMMINGS!!! COST IS $9.00 INCLUDES TAX AND TIP, IF YOU DID NOT PAY FOR THE YEAR! PROGRAM: Board District Meeting Governor Clair October Mrotek, his annual 11, visit to 2007 the Club!! Immediately following the Regular Club Meeting! the dinner this year, and are looking for a third person to chair for next year. Let your officers know if you are willing! Again, I remind you to think of new fund raiser for our club that will be ours. The board in considering printing new set of Sunset Lions place mats with the associated advertising as a source of funds. This fund-raiser only happens every five years or so. The theme for the District Governors dinner will be Italian Night.

This shows the devastation that happened to their home... Minutes of Winona Sunset Lions The dollars given to this Winona Lions couple is a small amount, but it all helps to bring their home back to a reality again. Board Meeting September 13, 2007 Meeting was called to order after the conclusion of our regular meeting by president, Paul Schumacher. Minutes of last board meeting were approved as they appeared in the Newsletter. Treasurer s report was approved as presented with the following balances: General account $4, and Projects account $5, The Lion of Winona and the District 5M1 hearts go out to Lions Diane and Lion Steve... we wish you the very, very best in your recovery from this disaster. NEW BUSINESS: Motion was made, seconded and passed to donate an additional $50 to the Emergency Relief monies received from 5M1 for a total of $2050. The three Lions clubs in Winona received a total of $4,700 from 5M1 Emergency Relief. Our club received $2,000. Our money was split as follows: Juanda Schollmeier - $300 Dick and Ada Hengle - $500 Connie & Ted Hagedorn - $150 Brenda Svendson - $150 Jean and Kevin Kronebusch - $150 Lyle Zeigeweid - $150 Bob and Donna Andraschko - $150 Steve Runkle - $500 (given to Steve previously) Mary Malloy and Gary Evans volunteered to be a committee of two to make plans to celebrate our 30th anniversary. This newsletter is only as good as those in the Winona Sunset Lions that read it. We cannot have a newsletter that is read by some of the Sunset Lions. If you are not reading this newsletter how do you know if you are assigned to a certain project or when the regular meetings are? Please take a few minutes and read what is happening in your Winona Sunset Lions club. Did You Know??? by PDG Bill Clark, 2002 Information when on the Eye Bank The first corneal transplant was performed in PDG George Dugan, from the Austin (Noon) Lions, was instrumental in starting the Minnesota Lions Eye Bank back in The Minnesota Lions Eye Bank received over 2300 eye donations Of these 1000 were used in transplants. The balance of the cornea, which were not suitable for transplant, was used in research. In 2001 the approximately 50 Lions Eye Banks worldwide reported that they provided 21,378 corneal transplants and donated 13,542 eye to research. The Minnesota Lions Children s Eye Clinic had over 4000 patients last year. The Clinic s doctors have performed over 100,000 surgeries since The Macular Degeneration Center (MAC) saw over 1000 patients the first year of operation. Minnesota Lions and Lioness have contributed over $14 million to the Eye Bank and Hearing Foundation for equipment, buildings and research. Lions have collected over 3 million used eyeglasses in Minnesota in the past 6 years for redistribution in developing countries. Last year alone, over 5 million used eyeglasses were collected worldwide with nearly 3 million pairs distributed to needy people throughout the world. Lions programs have provided cataract surgery for over 828,457 people in India alone. All of this is possible because of the hard work of 1.4 million Lions and Lioness like you. Also, did you know. A new law now insures that organ donors families honor the wishes of people who intend for their organs to be donated when they die. The law makes sure that people who designate him or herself, as organ donors on their driver s licenses will become donors. An additional provision of the law requires that people applying for a driver s license now are given information about organ donation. That information includes a description of organ donation, the importance of letting family members know of one s wishes, and a telephone number of a certified Minnesota organ procurement organization one may contact for information. This information was taken from our October 2002 Sunset Lions Newsletter. Sometimes what we have accomplished in the past is a good reminder for the future. ATTENTION! As you read this bulletin you may find a few mistakes. They have been put there for those who intentionally look through the bulletin looking for mistakes.
