A Message From The President: The good news is the Roswell Lions just keep on roaring. We just completed the Roswell festival and it was one of the best. Our location at the festival was the best. The resources we had to sell goods were excellent and the volunteers all worked eagerly to make it happen. The report from Robbie is that we made about $1, Thanks to Kyle Evens and Charles Caudell for their leadership. A special thanks to the wives who volunteered and or allowed their Lion (husbands) to work at the festival. The good news is we are almost $2,000 ahead of the goal we set for fund raising this year. That is the result of so many of you pitching in to "make it happen". The good news is we are nearing the end of the 49th year of Lionism in Roswell. The great news is next year we celebrate our 50th birthday. HOW ABOUT IT!!! Are you ready?????? Join with me and set at least! one more goal for your participation next year in the Roswell Lions Club...bring in one new member for the club. During our 50th birthday celebration we can reach a membership of 100, IF YOU WILL MAKE THAT COMMITMENT. Please give me a written note that simply says, "I WILL" and sign it. Do that at the May or June meeting. That will really be "good news" if you will. The Prez-Gene Mikell The Officers: Nomination Committee Chair Lion Phil Farias presented the following nominees to the membership and they were accepted by voting. 2 From the International Online Newsletter: May is Lions Recycle for Sight Month Each May Lions throughout North America collect used eyeglasses, as well as prescription and non-prescription sunglasses. The collected eyeglasses are shipped to one of nine official Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centers, where they are distributed for Lions-sponsored or other service groups' missions. Is your club ready to participate in this nationwide effort? Clubs: Do you have a collection box for eyeglasses in your local Wal*Mart store? Wal*Mart has teamed up with Ross Products, the makers of Clear Eyes eye drops, to promote Lions Clubs International's eyeglasses collection program. Clubs are encouraged to place Lions Recycle for Sight boxes or other collection receptacles in Wal*Mart stores. For more information, contact your SightFirst Chairman. The chairman has received materials about this unique opportunity! New--Lions Learning Center A new e-learning program has been added to Lions Clubs International's Web site! From the home page, simply click on "Lions Learning Center," then click on "Take a Course" to begin e-learning. No registration is required. Each course combines PowerPoint slides with streaming audio and video of the Lion instructor. Course #1, "All About Lions," covers Lions history, membership and service programs, structure, protocol, badges and LCIF. The instructional material is designed to meet the needs of new Lions who require orientation and mature Lions who desire to hold club or district office. Course #1, with instructor Past International Director Mick Barrus, was posted on the English Lions Learning Center section on April 1, The Spanish Lions Learning Center and Course #1 with instructor Past International Director Rodolfo Alfredo Marinelli, will be posted on May 1, Look for more languages and courses later this year Online Convention Coming The 2001 Online Convention will be posted on LCI's Web site on June 1. Visit the 2001 Online Convention for a preview of convention activities. Then from July 2-6, the section will be updated daily with a message from Lions Clubs International President Behar, photographs from convention activities, speech excerpts and more. (This site will be posted in all official languages, except Chinese, Japanese and Korean.) Sight Quiz Question from last month In what country was the first known cataract surgery performed (sometime around the year 500 B.C.)? Answer: India. Source: "Amazing Trivia Facts Calendar," Workman Publishing Fundraisers: Fly-the-Flag Don t forget this important fundraiser. We are asking each Lion to solicit businesses in Roswell to participate in this worthwhile program. If you feel more comfortable approaching a neighbor we would welcome their participation also. If you do not know a business or neighbor that wants to participate we ask that you commit to proudly display the American Flag in front of your home. If you have questions please contact Lion Tom Philips at or atphill@bellsouth.net 2

3 White Cane Day- Our Best Effort Ever White Cane Chairman Lion Mickey Berman thanks everyone for his or her participation and challenges Congressman Isakson and Mayor Jere Wood and other honored guests and spouses to take us over $1,000 mark. His emotional speech was quite effective as Mayor Wood raced up with his $20 bill to get us going. Not to be out done Congressman Isakson later matched the Mayor during his remarks. Others donated an additional $197 bringing our total for 2001 to $1218. This total also included fines collected by our Tail Twister and our door prize money. 11 th Annual Roswell Colors Festival of Arts You could not have ordered better weather than we had this Mother s Day weekend. The festival had record attendance and because of that we had record sales and contributions. This year we sold flats of flowers, hanging baskets, cantaloupes, corn, vidalia onions and ice cold water. For the second year in a row, our clown Lion Todd Chancey was a hit with the kids. His donation jar almost hit $500 this year. Event Chairman Charlie Caudell thanks all those Lion and spouses that participated and made this fundraiser a success. Many thanks to Kroger and Publix for donating the produce. See all the pictures in the June Newsletter. Roswell Lions Mall - Shop Our Mall and Save Money Father s Day will be here before you know it. Enjoy the convenience and savings of shopping our on-line mall. You will have access to special offers and discounts from dozens of well-known retailers and, best of all, every purchase you make will help support our club and Lions Clubs International programming at no expense to you. Golf Tournament October 2001 The club is exploring the possibility of hosting a charity golf tournament this year in October. We have received quotes from several golf clubs and $70 per golfer is the best rate (greens fee, cart, range balls and lunch). If you are member of a club and/or you know someone and you can beat this rate, please contact Lion Jeffrey Hammen immediately. We need to have a signed contract by our June board meeting to put together a quality golf fundraiser in October. Tenative date, Monday October 22 nd. 3
