Our guest speaker will be Morgan Rodgers, Assistant Director of the Roswell Recreation & Parks Department. PDG Jesse Joiner inducts our newest member Stanley Shuford. Lion Charles Caudell sponsored Lion Stanley. Memorial Day in Roswell: Make this Memorial Day special. The City of Roswell, Roswell Rotary and East Roswell Rotary will present Memorial Day "Roswell Remembers". General Paul Tibbets, famed pilot of the "Enola Gay" who dropped the first atomic bomb on August 6, 1945 on Hiroshima will be the honored guest on Sunday, May 26 th. "Roswell Remembers" will be held at the Grimes Bridge Senior Center at 6:00 PM. The cost will be $10 and guests will be admitted on a first come first serve basis. A military service will be held on Monday, May 27 th at 11:00 AM on the grounds of City Hall. The emcee for the event will be Moby of KICKS FM. There will be re-enactors, military equipment and fly-overs. Banks and Shane will provide music entertainment starting at 12:30 PM.

2 Resume of Last Meeting: President Gene Mikell began the meeting. Lion Robbie Norman led the invocation. Lion Tom Phillips led the Pledge of Allegiance. Lions Earl Ake led the group in singing America the Beautiful. Lion Jesse Joiner inducted our newest Lion Stanley Shuford. President Gene Mikell read the list of individuals nominated as Officers and Directors for the year. A motion was made to accept the list of candidates. There was a second to the motion and the candidates were elected. Lions Mickey Berman and John Hathcock reported on White Cane Day. We collected about $900 at five sites. Lion Richard Noakes reviewed with the club the Adopt-A-Road program. We are going to be responsible for One mile of Holcomb Bridge Road where it crosses the Chattahoochee River. Lion Charles Caudell announced that Lion Kyle Evens would Chair this years Spring Festival. President Gene Mikell recognized Lion Jeffrey Hammen who was awarded an International President's Certificate of Achievement at the District 18-A Convention President Gene introduced our speaker Al Wiseman from The Knowledge Shop. Mr. Wiseman made an excellent presentation on lifelong learning. He stated, "Every business, club, social or family problem to be solved needs specific action: Objectives, Strategies, Goals and Tactics". He also quoted Thomas Edison several times, "There is always a better way to do everything. It's up to you to find it." Mr. Wiseman offered a free class and Lion John Hathcock was the lucky winner. Lion Bill Duffin won the drawing and the meeting was adjourned. From the International Online Newsletter: Report on Lions Day with the United Nations On March 22, 2002, 600 Lions attended the 24th annual Lions Day with the United Nations (UN) chaired by Past International President Joseph Wroblewski at the historic United Nations building in New York City, New York, USA. International President J. Frank Moore III, as well as several speakers affiliated with the UN, addressed the crowd. Look for highlights on the day's events in the upcoming June issue of THE LION Magazine (Headquarters Edition). Plan to attend the 25th annual Lions Day with the United Nations in watch for further details online or in THE LION Magazine. For more information on Lions Day with the United Nations, including a virtual tour, browse Meeting of Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centers Held Representatives of the Lions Eyeglass Recycling Centers met at International Headquarters in April. One of the items discussed was the issue of metal reclamation. A consensus on how the centers collect metal glasses follows: Only when standard metal frame glasses are collected and deemed damaged beyond repair in the sorting process will the center recycle the metal. For more information on any one of the ten centers browse Lions Diabetes Education and Awareness Program The increase of diabetes in the world's populations is of important interest to all Lions. With proper education and awareness, many of those at risk in our communities can be helped to prevent or better control this debilitating disease. Lions Clubs International serves on the Steering Committee for the National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP), which is a joint program of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). One of LCI's goals for serving on the committee is to let diabetes chairmen know how they can find the latest practical information by accessing the National Diabetes Education Program at For information on "state-based programs" visit For questions contact executiveservices@lionsclubs.org.

3 Lions Worldwide Induction Day Held on April 20th, more than 330 districts have reported participation in this year's Lions Worldwide Induction Day. The day is a worldwide event that celebrates the association's proud past, present and future. During the event, new members were simultaneously inducted into clubs, strengthening Lions programs and commitment to the service of others. For more information inductionday@lionsclubs.org. Committee Reports: White Cane Day This day is set aside each year in April to raise money for the Georgia Lions Lighthouse. This year we participated on Saturday, April 13 th. One-third of the Lighthouse budget comes from the money collected during White Cane Day activities throughout Georgia. This year club members collected money at Wal-Mart, Southern Skillet Restaurant, Kroger-Mansell Road, Kroger-Highway 120 and First Union Bank. Lion John Hathcock our Project Chairman did an excellent job under the mentoring of Lion Mickey Berman our Chairman Emeritus. Thanks to all the Lions who volunteered and in some cases worked double shifts. The Roswell Junior Woman s Club and Roswell Visitors Center sponsor the festival. The festival features fine arts, original crafts, children s activities, musical entertainment, performing arts and great food. Due to the lack of donated items this year, the club decided to cancel our participation in the event.

4 50 th Anniversary Celebration Lions Sally Poole and Phil Farias are co-chairing the 50 th Anniversary Celebration Committee. If you would like to participate on this committee or you have any ideas you would like to share please contact either of these individuals. If you have any old pictures or club programs please share them with the committee also. Adopt-A-Road Project Chairperson Lion Richard Noakes needs volunteers. Our first clean up is scheduled for this Saturday, May 18 th from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM. All Lions will meet at the park adjacent to the Chattahoochee River. Habitat for Humanity Project The club has received word from Lions International LCIF that we have been approved for our grant. Its time to get the hammers ready!!!!!! Thanks goes to all the Lions who have helped us get to this point. Golf Outing September 30, 2002 Its time to start planning the 2 nd Annual Charity Golf Outing. The golf committee held its first meeting at Southern Skillet on April 26 th. We will continue to meet on a regular basis. If you are interested in assisting with this project contact Lions Pat Welden or Jeffrey Hammen. We need to begin recruiting golfers (individuals and foursomes) and sponsors. We would like to see each Lion organize a foursome or find a hole sponsor. This year's tournament will be in honor of Lion Clifford Vaughan - our only living charter member and will benefit our project fund. Actions Taken By the Club: The following actions were taken by the Club in April 2002: Contributed $100 to North Fulton Community Charities. September 30, 2002 Our 2 nd Annual Charity Golf Tournament at Trophy Club of Atlanta. Walking Wounded: Lion Mickey Berman is undergoing chemotherapy for lymphoma.
