GREAT NEWS! Golf Tournament Rescheduled The Fourth Annual Charity Golf Tournament has been rescheduled for Monday, October 25, Starting in 2005, the Tournament will be scheduled in the late Spring rather than Fall. Hopefully, this will allow for more participants since there are fewer tournaments in the Spring. Reverse Raffle News By Alan Bethel, Raffle Chairman Dinner Reverse Raffle Fund-Raiser--We are fast approaching May 1st, the date of our first dinner reverse raffle fund-raiser. We are at a critical point in this new fund-raiser. From our best information, we have sold 55 of the $100 tickets and 33 of the $25 companion tickets. The break-even point on ticket sales is 65 of the $100 tickets. There are another 10 of the $100 tickets and 8 of the $25 companion tickets that members have indicated they can sell. It is obvious we are at a shortfall on the ticket sales with 2 plus weeks before the event. We need all members to make a strong ticket sales push in the next week to make this event a success. Please bring your checks to the meeting on Monday so we can obtain an exact count of the ticket sales. This fund-raiser for Eyesight Roswell is a great program for our Roswell Lions Club. Please consider buying a ticket for yourself and selling a ticket to your neighbor, friends, family or co-workers. The May 1st event should be a fun evening with a good meal, drink, dessert and a chance to win a $2500 grand prize and two $500 second prizes and some very nice door prizes, some of which are valued at over $100 each. Thanks to everyone for your efforts on this project.

He states Please participate in this very important survey of Lions leaders on the proposed expansion of SightFirst. The survey takes only a few minutes to complete. Your assistance will be of tremendous service. The link to the survey is: In an to Lion Leaders around the country, Lion Fukushima made the following information available: Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) has been a source of healing and care for millions of people throughout the world. We are especially proud of our work serving the visually impaired and the impact that our efforts are having in the fight against blindness through our SightFirst program. Thanks in large part to friends and leaders like you, LCIF will no doubt remain that source of healing and care well into the future. And today I would like to request your help in completing an extremely important survey that will help shape the future of SightFirst, LCIF, and our Association. Back in 1991, Lions Clubs International (LCI) and LCIF embarked on a remarkably successful campaign to fund important and needed facilities and services for the blind and visually impaired throughout the world.that effort, known as Campaign SightFirst (CSF), raised nearly US $150 million and has been responsible for funding nearly 700 SightFirst projects in almost 100 countries.sightfirst has also produced more than 3.4 million sight-restoring cataract surgeries, helped treat nearly 50 million people for river blindness, and has funded the construction or expansion of more than 258 eye hospitals, just to name a few key accomplishments. Today, we are clearly recognized as a world leader in vision and eye healthcare, and we feel a strong obligation to remain leaders in this fight against blindness. But the challenge is not over. The aging population, emergence of new causes of vision impairment, and increased rates of diabetic retinopathy and uncorrected refractive error in children, are threatening to darken the lives of millions more unless new efforts are initiated to deal with these new challenges. To continue the fight and our role in it, and to perhaps also move into new, exciting and uncharted territory in the areas of vision research, rehabilitation and education, we will be required to mount another challenging campaign to raise the necessary resources, similar to the great effort and success we achieved between 1991 and 1994 during Campaign SightFirst. As a first step we need to assess the timing and passion for conducting a campaign among Lions members. We need to ask questions of key stakeholders like you to determine the membership s willingness to embrace the mission and vision of SightFirst as we move into the future. To guide us through this process we have engaged Community Counselling Service (CCS), the international consulting firm that provided counsel to Lions during CSF, to conduct a feasibility and planning study to see if we have the support to raise the funds necessary to meet many of these needs. Sincerely, Kay Fukushima, Chairperson

6 For Your Health: Submitted by Jeffrey Hammen Americans Over 40 Warned Over Vision Loss By LINDSEY TANNER CHICAGO (AP) - More than 28 million Americans over age 40 have eye ailments that put them at risk for vision loss and blindness, researchers say, warning that the numbers will surge as the population ages. Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness worldwide and the No. 1 cause of poor vision in the United States, affecting an estimated 20.5 million American adults. That number is expected to climb to 30.1 million in the next 20 years, researchers say. Other major causes of blindness and vision loss are macular degeneration, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy. All are strongly linked with aging. The figures published Monday in April's Archives of Ophthalmology present the most accurate estimates to date on the prevalence of major causes of blindness and visual impairment in the United States, according to Dr. Frederick Ferris III of the National Eye Institute, which helped fund the research. The data are crucial for showing where research dollars need to be spent to avoid a ``tidal wave of chronic ocular disease over the next few decades,'' Ferris and Johns Hopkins University researcher James Tielsch wrote in an accompanying editorial. Currently, 1 million Americans over 40 are blind. They are among 3.3 million who suffer from some vision loss, a number projected to reach 5.5 million by The numbers are of concern not just because of their magnitude, but also ``because of the substantial increases in health care costs they spell,'' said Dr. Nathan Congdon, a coordinator of the research and an associate professor of ophthalmology at Johns Hopkins. More than $3 billion yearly is spent on cataract treatment alone, which usually involves surgery, Congdon said. Cataracts are cloudy areas that develop on the eye's lens and can result from injuries or age-related chemical changes. Macular degeneration involves damage to the macula, the center of the retina at the back of the eye. About 1.8 million adults are affected, the researchers said. In some cases, light-sensitive cells in the macula break down, gradually impairing vision. In others, leaky new blood vessels form behind the retina and cause vision loss. Treatments include lasers or laser-activated drugs, and recent studies have shown that high doses of antioxidant vitamins can help slow or even prevent vision loss in macular degeneration. Glaucoma affects about 2.2 million U.S. adults. It usually involves a build-up of fluid that normally bathes the eye, causing pressure that damages the optic nerve. Treatment includes eye drops and surgery. Diabetic retinopathy, which involves eye damage resulting from blood vessels weakened by diabetes, affects about 4 million American adults. Laser therapy, surgery and better control of diabetes are among the treatments. Send us your address. If your address has changed or if you have a new one, please it to editor@roswelllions.org.
