2 A MESSAGE FROM YOUR DISTRICT GOVERNOR Greetings all Lions, Lioness and Leos. Can you believe it? Thanksgiving is just weeks away and you all know what comes after that. What that really means is that our Lions year is zipping along. How are you and your Lions doing? What service projects have you done in the past month? How many new members have you or your club installed? All important questions as we move deep into the 2 nd quarter of this year. If your answer is not all positive, you still have time to make the turn and improve on your personal and club performance. Talk it up at your next club meeting and see what can be done to help the cause. If you did not attend the District Convention in October you missed an opportunity to learn about Lions. The seminars were great with the Leader Dog puppy raisers. PCC Dr Terry Musselman provided a great insight into Leadership but missed many of the Club Officers that would have benefited from his experience and expertise. Lion Stan Baker shared an excellent program on Orientation and how he can help clubs with starting your new Lions on the correct path. Our afternoon sessions with the Zone Chairs and PDG s were open and helpful suggestions were provided by both ID s Gary D Orazio and Jim Cavallaro. The baskets, 50-50, Ladies Programs, meal and evening presentation were all great. Watch for the date for the next convention and do yourself and your club a favor, sign up and get the benefit that we are providing to all Lions. PS: A big thanks to PDG s Amos Shatzer, Fred McKinley and the committee for organizing and running a super convention. Thanks guys. HOORAY!! Our membership numbers are in the black and rising. Congratulations to Blairs Mills, Forbes Road, Huntington and Lakemont for bringing us 13 new members in October. That puts us back to a net positive 9 members for this year. Remember my goal is to be at a net positive 88 on June 30 th. That means we need 79 more without drops. Has your club brought in a member this year? If not it is time to get out and ask that friend, relative, neighbor or your spouse to be a Lion. It is simple, all you have to do is ask and be able to explain why they should be a Lion. Please give this some serious consideration. Not for me but for the future of your club and Lions. Thanks to those that are asking and getting new Lions to the fold. Lion Susan and I hope that all of our Lions have an enjoyable Thanksgiving. This is always a great time to enjoy with friends and families. Let s be sure to give thanks for what we have been given this year and don t forget those that are less fortunate than us. Consider helping out with a gift of food for a food bank or an area resident that is in need. Happy Thanksgiving to All. Yours in Lionism, DG Larry L Loving I Individuals O Offering N Needed S Service FROM YOUR DISTRICT GOVERNOR ELECT I want to take this opportunity to personally thank the delegates at the convention for their support in electing me for the next District Governor of 14-L. It was an outstanding convention with educational seminars and lots of informative displays. We also had a very motivational speaker who was from Idaho, International Director Gary D Orazio. I will be talking to most of you in the coming months to help me fill the spots on the cabinet team so we can have a smooth transition in Thanksgiving is fast approaching so don t forget those less fortunate. This is our opportunity to provide help. Let us give thanks and enjoy this season with family, friends, and other lions. Yours in Lionism, VDG (DGE) Dennis 1

11 Northeast Pennsylvania Lions Eye Bank Are you a donor? Has your club made a contribution? More than 30,000 Americans and hundreds of thousands of others around the world suffer from corneal blindness each year. It is estimated that more than 10 million people worldwide could have their vision restored through corneal donation and transplant. In 2006, the Northeast Pennsylvania Lions Eye Bank was able to provide the gift of sight to 1,268 people. (1,163 people in 2005.) Since our inception in 1957, the Eye Bank has facilitated the sight restoration of more than 21,000 people. There is currently no substitute for human corneal tissue. Corneal transplant is solely dependent upon the availability of corneal donation. Almost everyone is a suitable cornea donor. Cataracts, poor eyesight, or age do not prohibit donation. It is very important that individuals who want to become a cornea donor inform their families of their wishes. Even in the presence of a signed donor card, family consent is required before donation can occur. Corneal transplant is the most frequently performed human transplant procedure. The first corneal transplant was performed in 1905, making it the world s oldest transplant surgery. Today, corneal transplant is primarily a one-day outpatient procedure. Approximately 95% of all corneal transplant surgeries are successful. The Northeast Pennsylvania Lions Eye Bank is an independent 501(c) 3 nonprofit corporation. We are fully credited by the Eye Bank Association of America (EBAA). 10
