1 Mar. 30 April Lesson (Thurs) Travel Safety: Know Before You Go 10:30am at the LaRue Co. Extension Office Will cover reminders on how to keep your family and money safe when traveling and updates regarding the government-issued documents you use when traveling, such as U.S. Passport and Driver s License Walking Challenge A 6 week challenge between teams of 4-6 persons. Starts March 27 and ends May 7. On Mondays, the teams will report their members total steps or miles covered for the past 7 days. Weekly prizes given. To register a team contact the Extension Office by March 24. Get Moving LaRue County! Sewing Service Group- The Nifty Needles group meets at the Extension Office for Open Sew Days on the 4th Monday of each month from 10am 2pm. They work on various service projects and are led by Master Clothing Volunteer- Rosa Smith. Anyone can help out on these workdays- if you can t sew, you will be given other tasks to do. The next work dates are Mar. 27 & Apr. 24. They will be working on making twin-size quilt coverlets and pillowcases to donate to Center for Courageous Kids near Scottsville KY. The Center s mission is to uplift children who have life threatening illnesses by creating experiences that are memorable, fun, build selfesteem, and are physically safe and medically sound. The Kentucky Extension Homemakers Association (KEHA) will be collecting the donated quilts and pillowcases at the 2017 state meeting in Owensboro starting on May 1. Make sure your donation has attached to it a notecard with the name, county and address of the donor of each quilt or pillowcase. FCS agent, Theresa Howard will take any local donations to the KEHA meeting. These need to be brought to the Extension Office no later than April 28. Sincerely, Theresa A. Hodgenville, KY (270) Fax: (270) larue.ca.uky.edu UK Ovarian Cancer Screening Program The Screening Research Program provides free cancer screenings by transvaginal ultrasound (TVS) to postmenopausal women who are over the age of 50 or over the age of 25 with a family history of ovarian cancer. This is for all women in Kentucky, you don t have to be a member of Extension Homemakers to participate. Women can call to make an appointment for a screening. Most screenings are done at the UK campus in Lexington but periodically are offered at other sites in Kentucky, such as in Elizabethtown at the Hardin County Health Dept. You must call the same number to schedule at either location. History of Kentucky Extension Homemaker Association (KEHA) support of Ovarian Cancer Screening program. In 1976, Mrs. Virginia McCandless, who was serving as KEHA state health chairman, was diagnosed with ovarian cancer. She worked with UK Medical Center to establish the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. In 1978, KEHA made their first donation and voted to continue raising funds for the program. By summer of 2016, a total of $1,354, has been raised by KEHA. The program has provided free screenings for over 50,000 women in Kentucky, detected over 600 ovarian tumors and 103 ovarian cancers in women who had no symptoms. You can also support UK Ovarian Cancer Screening through the Kroger Community Rewards Program. You register online at communityrewards. Kroger will make contributions to the UK Ovarian Cancer Screening Program based on the purchases of Kroger Plus card holders that are registered in their Community Rewards Program.
