This is your chance to support Transplant House of Cleveland, whose mission is to provide temporary, affordable housing and support in a home-like environment for organ transplant patients and their families while they visit Cleveland for medical care. Transplant House provides housing and comfort to families from all across this country. Guests are pursuing a second chance at life given through organ transplantation - a journey that is complex and draining in all cases, but more so for those who are far from home. Typical stays at Transplant House are 4-6 weeks, but have also been many months and even years long, due to the wait for an organ and the need to be near the medical center during the early weeks of recovery post-transplant. Transplant House is filled to capacity and needs to expand. The funds raised at this event will support physical expansion and the continued development of the You re Never Alone caregiver mentoring program that has become so important to the caregivers and patients. Please join us for our A Second Dance at Life Fundraiser on Friday, April 21, 2017 at The Tudor Arms Hotel, as local celebrities and community leaders are paired with professional dancers for a competition that is sure to delight and entertain. Let the Cleveland community know you care about University Hospitals and Cleveland Clinic organ transplant patients and their families who are faced with life-threatening medical crises. Transplant House is a gem- located in University Circle and currently comprised of 15 apartments and community space, giving guests easy access to medical centers and a welcoming, walk able neighborhood that offers many resources. The apartments are fully furnished and equipped to feel like a home-away-from-home from the moment guests enter. They are affordable and serve as a safe space to connect with others who are enduring the same medical challenges. The sense of isolation guests would feel in a hotel is replaced with a feeling of community through the opportunity to share a meal, do laundry together, or sit on the front porch and talk about the day. 2 Transplant House Guests: Kati and Kathy A young woman with cystic fibrosis breathes easily now, thanks to a double-lung transplant Until recently, Kati only knew a life with cystic fibrosis (CF) a progressive, genetic disease that causes persistent lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time. At age 33, rather suddenly, Kati s disease worsened. It was a shock when in February, 2015, her doctors at home in Chicago began talking about a transplant. She came to the Cleveland Clinic in September 2015 to begin the evaluation process for a double-lung transplant. Shortly after she returned home from that trip, she was almost immediately sent back to Cleveland on a medical flight. Her parents, Kathy and Pete, flew in from Oklahoma to be with her. While Kati was hospitalized, her parents stayed in an on-campus hotel for the first few nights. Soon, Pete had to fly back home to work and hated the thought of leaving Kathy with no car at a lonely hotel. Thankfully, someone told them about Transplant House. Pete was relieved to learn that the 15-apartment building that constitutes Transplant House was a convenient and affordable option. It would surround his wife, and eventually his daughter, with staff, volunteers, and other families who would watch out for them. From there, they could take a free shuttle to the hospital, and find all they needed in the neighborhood, without a car. Kathy checked into Transplant House and began to call her 550 sq. ft., fully-furnished and equipped apartment home for the duration of Kati s medical treatment. Kati waited 4 ½ weeks for her transplant and had to be hospitalized the entire time. Kathy shuttled back and forth between the hospital and the Transplant House daily. At the hospital, Kathy did all she could to understand Kati s condition. At Transplant House, Kathy could do things that she would do at home, like cook, bake, do laundry, and watch TV. She could also join a weekly family meal that is provided by volunteers and get to know the other guests. She could give and receive the support that families need in such stressful situations. Two days after Mom s birthday, the organ donation came, explains Kati. Her transplant went smoothly and her recovery progressed as doctors had hoped. Just two weeks after transplant, Kati was living at Transplant House with her mom, shuttling to the hospital for frequent biopsies and blood tests, and practicing being at home before she would be allowed to return to Chicago. Transplant House offers a good mix of space our own space that allows us time to be alone, and shared space that allows us to talk to other people who understand this unique situation we are in, explains Kati. Coming back here [to the apartment] it s all on you; no nurses. You have to deal with your new routine. Having a kitchen is great and so is the location. We can walk around safely. It feels like a neighborhood. I can t imagine not having this place. If I were going through it again, I would evaluate a transplant program based upon housing. We know how important it is. A hotel is not sufficient, says Kati.
