The Scientific Program Committee has put together an exciting program that includes the popular Diagnostic Cytology Seminar moderated by Dr. Paul Staats and Ms. Jenna Benson; the Current Issues in Cytology; the State of the Art Symposium, a special seminar on the Evolution in Cytopathology Practice presented by the ASC/ASCP Workgroup: Focusing on Emerging Roles in Cytopathology; and much more. This year, we are fortunate to have Dr. Timothy Bono speaking about the Psychology of Resilience. His topic is especially fitting since we have sorely missed Dr. Brian Collins while planning this year s program. As the original Chair of the Scientific Program Committee, Dr. Collins had already started planning the meeting and Dr. Bono was one of his first speakers he selected. New this year, the Cytology Shark Tank will take place on Saturday evening before the President s Welcome Reception. Watch this exciting event as finalists give their pitches to a panel of judges who will deliberate and select the winner of a $50,000 research award. Liquid biopsy measuring serum levels of circulating tumor cells is being touted as the exciting new alternative to invasive tissue biopsies. At the Koss Lecture on Sunday, Stanford Radiation Oncologist, Dr. Maximilian Diehn will tell us how he deciphers the tiny genetic messages in a bottle left behind as cancer cells die and release DNA into the bloodstream. Throughout the entire Meeting you will have the opportunity to choose from a wide array of sessions including Signout with Professors, Video Microscopy Tutorials, Cytology Workshops, Trainee Enrichment Seminars, and Roundtable Discussions. Top papers in cytopathology will also be presented during the scientific sessions. We look forward to seeing you Phoenix! Kristen A. Atkins, MD Co-Chair, ASC Scientific Program Committee Maheswari Mukherjee, PhD, MS, CT(ASCP) Nebraska Medical Center Omaha, Nebraska Christina S. Strategies in Cytotechnology Education () If you are a practicing cytologist, pathologist, cytotechnologist, student, recent graduate or educator, come join us on Friday, November 10 th, 2017 from 8:00 am to 12:30 pm for the engaging and interactive Strategies Session sponsored by the CPRC (Cytotechnology Programs Review Committee). The focus this year is on modernizing our approach to education, professional and workplace awareness and moving to masters level programs. Strategies in Cytopathology Education () If you are a Director of a residency or fellowship program, please join us on Friday afternoon at 1:00 pm for this two session discussion. Topics will include communication, conflict resolution, accreditation, milestones and physician wellness. Trainee Enrichment Sessions ASC Members who are Residents, Fellows, Students and Cytotechnologists in their first 3 years can register. Trainee Enrichment Sessions are FREE 60 minute sessions throughout the Meeting. They are informal gatherings with lead speakers to keep the topics on track. Open dialogue is encouraged during all sessions. Cytology Workshops (/SAM) Non-Microscopic Workshops are hours (or 1 hour for a Non-Microscopic Mini Workshop) intensive sessions promoting interaction and the exchange of information regarding specific significant topics. Microscopic Workshops consist of 2 hours of a combination of lecture and hands-on viewing with provided microscopes. Participants review cases and ask questions of the faculty as they review the glass slides. This format provides background information and presentation of any changes in practice, pitfalls in morphology, and ancillary studies. Virtual Slide Seminars (/SAM) The Virtual Slide Seminars are a new and innovative way to see interesting unknown cases as digital whole slide images. Presenters will begin with a brief 30-minute introductory lecture. Then the participants will have time to independently review interesting cases selected by the faculty and presented as virtual slides on dedicated laptop workstations. Video Microscopy Tutorials (/SAM) Interact with experts in the field during these small, informal slide reviews. Presenters project slides through a video microscope to review interesting cases. Participants do not use individual microscopes. Panel Luncheon Seminars (/SAM) These interactive sessions focus on a single topic and are presented by nationally known expert(s). The seminars commence with a lunch followed by the lecture. An opportunity for questions and answers is offered at the end of the seminar. Roundtable Discussions () These sessions encourage intimate discussions on different topics. Each table will have one speaker facilitating up to 9 participants. Participants may register for one topic and are not permitted to switch tables. Sign-out with the Professor () These 1 hour sessions provide close contact with an expert in the field doing what we all love, cytomorphology. Each session will focus on one area and the cases will be presented in a sign-out style at a 10-headed microscope. Participants are encouraged to join in the discussion. Ultrasound FNA Workshop () In this interactive workshop, participants will work with faculty in small groups to improve FNA biopsy technique and learn ultrasound guidance. A short lecture on FNA techniques and US guidance will be followed by practice sessions with the participants divided into small groups of 4-5. With supervision, each participant will practice FNA biopsy and smearing as well as using US guidance. 4 For more information and to register, visit cytopathologymeeting.org
