In Memory of Our Beloved Mother, Bernice Marie Sedlacek On behalf of my brothers and myself, we would like to thank you for the Peace lily that was sent to the funeral home for our mother. We would also like to extend a special thankyou to all of the people who knew her and who have made contributions/donations to the U of I College of Dentistry in mom s name. Your thoughtfulness and generosity has been greatly appreciated. It was also nice to have visited with some of you who we have not seen in a long time; it was just too bad it was under these circumstances. Take care. 2 Research Volunteers Invited to Participate in Research Study You are invited to participate in a research study being conducted in the College of Dentistry. The purpose of this research study is to determine the effect of the antibiotic chlorhexidine on Streptococcus mutans levels in the mouth following different regimens of application. For further information about this study, please contact Luke Foster (D2), or Dr. John Warren, N337 DSB; (Grand Canyon-continued from page 1) Prior to beginning their group bike trip, Steve, Murray, Jerry, Deb, Gerry and son, Mike, spent two days hiking in Zion National Park, which helped them become accustomed to the 4,000 feet-6,000 feet altitude. During the hikes they had spectacular views of Zion Canyon, the Virgin River, and the pink and white cliffs, especially at Observation Point (elevation 6,508 feet). The entire group rendezvoused on July 14 in St. George, Utah, where they joined Rim Tours, Inc., a company that organizes back country mountain bike trips. On this five-day bike trip along the Grand Canyon s north rim, the tour company provided three meals every day, a support vehicle, and three guides: one who led the group on the trails, a second who followed behind the group, and a third guide who drove the support vehicle. The intrepid Iowans rented full suspension mountain bikes for their adventure. During the first three days the eleven bikers traversed more than 60 miles on the Arizona Trail, at an altitude ranging between 8,000-9,000 feet. Their route included the East Rim Overlook, Upper Tater Canyon, and finally a bike ride across the Kaibab Plateau to the Grand Canyon s north rim. Their scenery included wildflowers, ponderosa pine, aspen, and a spectacular view of the Grand Canyon. Drs. Walton, Denehy and Aquilino report that people rode at their own pace and daily distances were reasonable. During the last two days of their tour, the group biked 27 miles on the Rainbow Rim Trail and camped at Locust Point campsite, located on the north rim. This trail, which follows the rim of the Kaibab Plateau, has spectacular views of the Grand Canyon. During day four they biked out to Timp Point and back to their campsite. On day five, the group biked to Parissawampitts Point, which is found at the end of the Rainbow Trail. To fortify the group, Rim Tours served hearty breakfasts (eggs, pancakes, French toast, sausage, bacon and fresh fruit); lunches (deli meats and salads); and dinners (spaghetti, pork loin, and a Greek chicken dish. The group was enthusiastic about their adventure. Gerry Denehy marveled at the awesome scenery. Rick Walton enjoyed the scenery, camaraderie, and the challenge of the trails. Deb Cobb pronounced it a great time and a great group. After returning home, Steve Aquilino told his daughter by phone, I just rode on the north rim of the Grand Canyon and it was so cool! Anne Williamson found the trip challenging but gratifying. Rick Williamson enjoyed the challenge and also enjoyed viewing Monument Point (where they hiked last year) from another perspective. He adds that biking was not as fatiguing to the legs as hiking with a 50 lb. pack but the combination of steepness, loose rock/dirt trails, and the altitude, made it every bit as challenging. The consensus was that they were able to leave work behind there was little talk about dentistry for five days. To enjoy their bike trip photos, see pages 3-5 of the DSB Weekly (online issue only).
