3 (Majd Haddad s Internship in China, cont. from page 1) During his sophomore year as an undergraduate biochemistry major, Majd volunteered at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics (UIHC) where he clocked 500 hours of work. During his junior year, he was put in charge of the student volunteers at UIHC. He also did volunteer work with the American Red Cross during their Iowa City blood drive. Majd was encouraged to apply for admission to the Iowa Biosciences Advantage program at the University of Iowa. The program identifies academically talented undergraduate, underrepresented minority students who are interested in research careers and gives them training that facilitates their entry into doctoral programs in biomedical, behavioral, and biophysical sciences. With the help of an NIH grant, Majd was able to work with Dr. Amnon Kohen, Department of Chemistry. His work with Dr. Kohen resulted in Majd being second author on a published article. (See below.) In summer 2008, through the UI s Minority Health and Health Disparities International Research and Training (MHIRT) Program Study Abroad, Majd received a Research Internship Award to intern in Shanghai, China for eight weeks. Successfully navigating the bureaucratic paperwork was very difficult Majd made three trips to the Chinese Embassy in Chicago before his paperwork was approved because of the security restrictions in place for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. Shanghai, which has a heavy Western influence, is the largest city in China with a population of more than 20 million people. (China s total population is 1.3 billion.) His eight-week internship was completed in three locations: Xinhu Hospital, where he participated in clinical research in the pediatric orthopedic department; Shanghai Children s Hospital, where he worked in the ER and the Special Care Clinic; and the 9 th People s Hospital (School of Dentistry). During the internship, Majd coped with culture shock and language barriers. Unlike patient health care in the U.S., in China he observed patients without privacy or personal space during their appointments -- family members are allowed in the examination room. To cope with the Chinese language, Majd had an electronic pocket dictionary. He also followed some good advice when trying different foods in China: If it looks good and smells good, then eat it. Some of his favorite memories of China included meeting patients and kids; Chinese food; exploring the city; meeting friendly people; getting lost ; and attending several events at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Majd says he learned several things during his internship in Shanghai. First, it s important to respect patients as well as be professional. He also gained experience working with children. During this trip, Majd became more knowledgeable about Chinese dentistry, medicine, and their culture. Last, he returned to the U.S. appreciating what he has and realizing he is in love with Iowa. Majd continues his busy schedule as a dental student. He has also been elected chair of the Professional Advancement Committee, which is the graduate and professional students governing body that oversees six colleges (Law, Pharmacy, Medicine, Dentistry, Graduate, and Business). The committee provides graduate and professional students (including dental students) with funds to do research, travel to conferences, and cover other expenses related to their research. Majd encourages Iowa dental student researchers to take advantage of this opportunity to apply for funding. Go to Majd is a co-author on the following published article and also a co-author on two other articles that are in publication: Hong B. Haddad M. Maley F. Jensen JH. Kohen A. Hydride transfer versus radical transfer in thymidylate synthase. J Am Chem Soc May 3;128(17): Liu Xiu Ming. Zhang SY. Yang C. Chen MJ. Cai XY. Haddad MS. Yun B. Chen ZZ.
