2 Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Pearls VI The OMS Pearls VI Conference faculty features five outstanding educators and practitioners and 10 hours of CDE/CME credit over two days. OBJECTIVES: Office Anesthesia - 1) Review and recognize commonly known safe methods of anesthesia for office surgical procedures and optimum patient outcome and 2) improve performance and outcome of safe anesthesia with new techniques and anesthetic agents based on safe proven results. DentoalveolarSurgery - Analyze third molar removal with and without bone grafting, coronectomy procedures, impacted tooth removal at all sites, MRONJ cases, pediatric Dentoalveolar surgical cases, treatment of cysts, and other forms of dentoalveolar surgery. Advances in Dental Implant Surgery 1) Understand the implementation, image acquisition, treatment plan, patient and instrument registration, and surgery using new optically guided surgical system that utilizes visual light optical tracking and 2) Follow the step by step procedure of digital impression techniques to broaden implant skills. Non Surgical Cosmetic Procedures update the knowledge base since materials and techniques are constantly evolving and the OMS must compare the performance and patient outcome with old and new materials and techniques. PEARLS VI HIGHLIGHTS: Five experienced practitioners, all outstanding in their fields, will present common and new techniques to improve patient care and outcomes in Office Anesthesia, Dental Implant, and Non Surgical Cosmetic Treatment over two days yielding 10 CE hours. INTENDED AUDIENCE: This activity is specifically directed towards the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon and Restorative Dentist, but it is open to all other interested dentists, physicians, residents, medical and dental students, and allied health professionals. The Jack Kent Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation The Louisiana Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and The LSU Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Alumni Associations from the programs in New Orleans and Shreveport are proud to join the Jack Kent Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation (JKOMSF) in sponsoring OMS Pearls. The American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS) is also jointly providing this activity with the LSOMS and LSU OMS to provide CDE/CME credit. The LSU OMS Alumni Association, through the efforts of a core group of concerned alumni, formed the Jack Kent Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation (JKOMS Foundation) in 2010 for the purpose of supporting the teaching, research, and service goals of the LSU OMS department in New Orleans. The foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization, and all donations are taxdeductible. All LSU OMS alumni and Pearls course attendees are invited to attend the JKOMFS Dinner and Roast honoring Dr. Jack Kent for a lifetime dedicated to OMS education and training. The dinner is exactly where the Pearls course is given 41st floor of the Marriott Hotel, which gives a spectacular view overlooking the French Quarter and Mississippi River. Emery III, DDS noon - 1:00 pm Contemporary implant surgery includes the need to use some form of computer assisted surgery. Every Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon and their team need to understand how the various forms of image guided surgery are implemented. A new Optically Guided Surgical System that utilizes visible light optical tracking will be presented in a concise and information packed format. This section will present clinical techniques for dealing with these impactions. 2:00 pm -3:00 pm Update on MRONJ James Swift, DDS Dealing with patients on the various anti-resorptive medications has become an important part of the oral surgery practice.

Digital impressions allow for improved implant placement accuracy, fabrication of custom temporary and permanent restorations and provides a powerful marketing tool to your patients and referrals. 8:30 am - 9:15 am Non Surgical Cosmetic Pearls to Augment Your Scope of Practice John P. Neary, DDS, MD, FACS This lecture will provide a comprehensive review of the latest injectable fillers and their uses with additional discussion on the use of neurotoxins, lasers for resurfacing, and scar revision. The topics will be presented in a manner that will encourage practitioners to incorporate these procedures into their practice. 9:15 am - 10:00 am Anesthesia Mishaps in the Oral SurgeryOffice James Swift, DDS The provision of ambulatory anesthesia is associated with known risks and complications. This talk will review the current state of the risks of anesthesia in the oral surgeons office. 10:00 am - 11:00 am Something Old, Something New: Geriatric and Pediatric Anesthesia Considerations. Stuart Lieblich, DMD 11:00 am - 11:40 am Break The challenge of providing an office anesthetic is different when dealing with the extremes of age. This section will discuss the significant differences in pharmacokinetics and physiologic issues in these populations. 11:40 am -1:00 pm Anesthesia M&M James Swift, DDS and Stuart Lieblich, DMD Actual office anesthetic cases that occurred in the oral surgery office will be presented to illustrate the mistakes that were made and what warning signs and interventions might have caused a better outcome.
6 OMS PEARLS FACULTY SPEAKERS Stuart Leiblich, DMD Clinical Professor Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery University of Connecticut Visiting Asistant Professor, Tufts University Avon Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Avon, Connecticut Dr. Lieblich is a graduate of Rutgers University and the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. He completed his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Kings County/Downstate Medical Center in New York and was an Assistant Professor of the University of Connecticut. Currently, he is in private practice in Avon, CT and maintains a part-time teaching appointment at the U. Connecticut as Clinical Professor. Dr. Lieblich has been a contributor to 20 textbooks and has published 45 papers and abstracts. He lectures widely on ambulatory anesthesia, dental implants, and dentoalveolar surgery. Stu has served as President of the American Dental Society of Anesthesiology and the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is on the editorial boards of Anesthesia Progress; Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine Oral Pathology and the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He serves on many local, state and national committees and is a member of the ADA s Commission on Accreditation and the AAOMS Parameters of Care Committee. James Swift, DDS Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery University of Minnesota School of Dentistry Private Practice at University of Minnesota Medical Center Dr. Swift is a cum laude graduate of Cornell College in Iowa, received his DDS at the University of Iowa, and completed his OMS training in 1985 at the University of Oklahoma, where he held a faculty position before joining the faculty at Minnesota. Dr. Swift has served as the President of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and American Dental Education Association (ADEA), and has served on the Board of Directors of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation (OMSF). He is currently Chair of the Board of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery National Insurance Company (OMSNIC). Jim has received the Distinguished Service Award from the ADEA, the RV Walker Distinguished Service Award and Research Recognition Award from AAOMS, and the Century Club Professor of the Year Award from the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. John P. Neary, DDS, MD, FACS Assistant Professor and Chair Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery LSU School of Dentistry and Health Sciences Center Dr. Neary received a Bachelor s of Science degree in environmental science and engineering in 1982 from Purdue University and earned a doctorate in dental surgery cum laude in 1986 from Ohio State University. He completed his OMS residency at Charity Hospital in 1990 and graduated from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in He then completed his General Surgery internship and a Fellowship in Facial Cosmetic Surgery with Dr. Michael Kinnebrew at The Facial Surgery Center of the Gulf South. Dr. Neary is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and serves on the board of Purdue University. Robert Emery, DDS Private Practice in Washington DC Director of Capital Center Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Senior Attending Surgeon of Washington Hospital Center Dr. Emery received his DDS from U. of Illinois, completed a general practice residency at Long Island Jewish Hospital in New York, and then completed his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery residency at U. of Maryland and Shock Trauma Unit. He is ABOMS certified and has pioneered technology in image guided surgery for implant dentistry and OMS. Bob received the Nobelpharma OMS Research Award and Grant from the OMS Research Foundation. He is a founding partner and Chief Medical Officer of X-Nav Technologies. PEARLS VI COURSE DIRECTOR John N. Haggerty, DDS, MD, FACS Private Practice, Lees Summit, Missouri Clinical Assistant Professor Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery University of Missouri School of Dentistry Dr. Haggerty obtained his DDS from the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) and completed his OMS-MD residency training at Louisiana State University in New Orleans in Dr. Haggerty divides his time between private practice and serving as a clinical assistant professor within the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. He is the co-editor of the Atlas of Operative Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, the president of the Greater Kansas City Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Society and serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Haggerty has numerous publications in the fields of dental implants, alveolar ridge augmentation, maxillofacial trauma and reconstruction.
