Raper Award Dr. Saulo Sousa Melo, an oral and maxillofacial radiology resident, received the Howard R. Raper Award, which was established to recognize a promising graduate student who demonstrates an interest in oral and maxillofacial radiology and intends to pursue a career in academia at the recent American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology meeting. 2 Page 2 Alumnus James Q. Swift Receives Distinguished Service Award Dr. James Q. Swift (DDS 80) received the 2015 Robert V. Walker Distinguished Service Award during the annual meeting of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons (AAOMS), which was held in Washington, D.C. Dr. Swift is professor in the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry. He is also chairman of the OMS National Insurance Company (OMSNIC). More than 80% of eligible U.S. oral and maxillofacial surgeons are insured by OMSNIC. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (ABOMS), a fellow of the American and International College of Dentists, and a former president of both the American Dental Education Association and the ABOMS. In 2009, Dr. Swift received the Distinguished Service Award from the American Dental Education Association. Medea McKeone and Family Meet President Obama Medea McKeone, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, and her family met with President Obama on September 14 in Des Moines. Her daughter, Allyson, had written a letter to the White House regarding equal pay for women. On September 9, Allyson received a phone call from the White House inviting the McKeone family to meet with the president. The McKeone family met with President Obama at North High School in Des Moines after going through security with approximately 25 other people. Afterwards, they were escorted to assigned seats in the auditorium to listen to the president s speech. (Above left): Medea, Abby, Allyson, President Obama, Alyssa, and Jim McKeone. OMS Faculty Attend the Annual Meeting of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons Faculty from the Department of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery attended the annual meeting of the American Board of Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeons, which was held in Washington, D.C. The dinner was held at the Smithsonian s American History Museum. (Left to right): Dr. Earl Hasegawa (DDS 89, oral surgery 95) who is a board examiner with the ABOMS and has an oral surgery practice in Kahului, Hawaii (Maui); Dr. Richard Burton, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, who is now vice president for the ABOMS Board; Dr. Kirk Fridrich, head of the Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery department and a former Board president; and Dr. Bill Synan, Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery, who was recognized at the dinner on October 3 for his service of 10 years as a Board examiner.

3 Page 3 The College of Dentistry Welcomes Pat Juffer-Flake The College of Dentistry and Dental Clinics welcome Pat Juffer-Flake who is a new dental hygienist in Clinic Administration & Patient Care. Pat grew up in northwest Iowa; she has lived in the Iowa City and Lone Tree areas for the past 25 years. She graduated with a BS in dental hygiene from the UI College of Dentistry s program in Pat worked in private practice for 20 years, including 14 years at Towncrest Dental Office in Iowa City. She has been married to Steve Flake for the past 22 years; they have a 19-yearold son, Austin, and a 17-year-old daughter, Lexi. Pat loves spending time with her family, boating/ water sports, and watching the Hawkeyes. Pat and Steve are also fitness coaches as well as resistance and kickboxing instructors at Farrell s Extreme Bodyshaping in Iowa City. The College of Dentistry Welcomes Karie Mobley The College of Dentistry and Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry welcome Karie Mobley. Karie is a research associate and is the coordinator for the Iowa Fluoride Study/Iowa Bone Development Study. She graduated from the University of Iowa with a bachelor s degree in psychology. She was a previous coordinator for the bridge and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) canine study at the VA, and had been in emergency medicine as a paramedic before becoming a certified clinical research coordinator (CCRC). Karie was born in Wheaton, IL, grew up in Iowa City, and now resides in Cedar Rapids with her husband, Rod. In her free time, Karie enjoys good food, big band music, and fostering abandoned animals. 4 Page 4 Serious about going the Extra Inch Finding a Missing Umbrella: Going the Extra Inch (Above, left to right): Mary Moyers, Instrument Processing, and Diane Ryerson, Clinic Administration (Operative Clinic) While a misplaced umbrella may seem to be a very small thing, we have all experienced it, and losing one can be frustrating. Mary Moyers, Instrument Processing, was on the elevator in the DSB a couple of weeks ago and noticed that a man had stepped off the elevator and appeared to be looking for something. When Mary asked him if he needed help, they both realized that they knew each other from the UIHC. Dr. Adel Afifi explained that he was at the College for an appointment and had left his new umbrella in the hallway, most likely on the second floor. Mary enlisted the assistance of Diane Ryerson, Dental Clinic Administration, to help her search in the Operative Dentistry Clinic. While the umbrella remained missing that afternoon, they assured Dr. Afifi they would keep an eye out for it. The next morning, Diane brought the umbrella to Mary s office. Mary asked for the assistance of the patient representative in contacting Dr. Afifi since he is an emeritus faculty at UIHC because she did not want to look up his home phone number because of HIPAA regulations. Ann Synan contacted Mr. Afifi who confirmed with delight that the umbrella was his. The umbrella was then delivered to Dr. Afifi s office in Pediatrics at UIHC where it was kept safely for his return. Dr. Afifi called the patient rep to show his appreciation and wrote a note of thanks to Mary: Mary, Many thanks for following up and finding my umbrella. You are very kind and a role model. God bless you. Adel Mary said the note warmed my heart. The small things really do matter and can mean so much. Thanks, Diane and Mary, for going the extra inch for Dr. Afifi, to help show him we appreciate that he is our patient and an important part of our university community. One individual is recognized semiannually from a list of nominations, which are screened and selected by a committee made up of previous Ambassador Club awardees. Eligible for consideration is any merit staff or professional and scientific employee who has demonstrated special qualities in performing their daily tasks. Nomination forms, program guidelines, and a listing of ambassadors are available on the IntraDent under Services > Dental Human Resources > Rewards & Recognition-COD.
