Subject area: Science Teacher: David Klang Title of Lesson: Skeletal System Grade Level: 8 Time Needed: 2 days of 43 minutes State Core Objective: F.8.1 Understand the structure and function of cells, organs, tissues, organ systems, and whole organisms Goals: Students will identify the layers of bone. Students will identify the names of the bones of the skeletal system. Students will state the functions of the skeletal system. Objectives: Students will use prior knowledge to define vocabulary words associated with the skeletal system. Students will state 3 functions of the skeletal system. Students will differentiate between the layers of the bone. Students will describe ways to keep their bones healthy. Students will label the bones of the skeletal system. Methods: Pre-reading- Introduce unit with a video (65 seconds): Brainstorm reasons why you think your bones are an important part of your body- list on the board Using Word Splash, students will be asked to use their prior knowledge in an attempt to define words pertaining to the skeleton system. Take pretest to determine students prior knowledge. Reading- Students will read and fill-in-the-blank notes pertaining to the skeleton system using information from the site: Responding- A worksheet will be used to have students reflect on main ideas and information presented. Exploring- (Multiple levels based on ability) Using the following sites, the students will explore by using on-line diagrams and labeling the correct bone. (more challenging) (label bones and assemble a skeleton) Skeleton.aspx (On-line (skeleton with parts to identify)
Applying- Students will compile a list of potential ways that they can keep their bones healthy. Students will also cut apart the bones that make up the skeleton, attach the bones in the correct location, and label each bone correctly. Assessment Pre-reading- The Word Splash vocabulary activity and pretest will be collected to see how much the students already know about bone terminology and use that to determine areas that may need further clarification. During reading- We will assess students by the discussions/comments that are made during the group reading and note taking sections; assessment will also be done by observing students when completing the worksheet and by labeling the bones of the skeleton. Post-reading- Take post-test to see what knowledge students have gained. The list will be collected and graded to ensure students understanding of how they can keep their bones healthy and why this is important. Students will also cut apart the bones that make up the skeleton, attach the bones in the correct location, and label each bone correctly. Strategies used: videos, Word Splash, note taking, on-line games, pre and post tests, worksheet, skeleton paper doll
Skeleton Word Splash Name: Directions: Use the words in the Word Splash box to fill in the blanks. Vertebrae Cranium Bone marrow Tendons Calcium Compact bone Spongy bone 1) Lighter, flexible inner layer 2) The spine and backbones are also known as. 3) This bone protects your brain. 4) This helps make blood cells. 5) Attach muscles to bone 6) Strong outer layer 7) Mineral that helps make bones hard and strong
Pretest: Name: The Skeletal System 1. What organs give the body shape and support? a. Muscles b. Bones c. Intestines 2. What bones protect the spinal cord? a. Vertebrae/Spinal Column b. Ribs c. Cranium 3. Where are blood cells produced? a. The Heart b. The Veins c. The Bones 4. Which mineral is stored in our bones? a. Calcium b. Iron c. Zinc 5. 5 Human Skeletal System Science, level: Middle Name: What is the Skeletal System? Your skeletal system is all of the in the body and the such as tendons, ligaments and that connect them. Your are also considered part of your skeletal system but they are not counted as. Your teeth are made of enamel and dentin. Enamel is the strongest substance in your body. How does the Skeletal System help us? Support The main job of the skeleton is to provide for our body. Without your skeleton your body would into a heap. Your skeleton is but. Without bones you'd be just a of skin and guts on the floor. Protection Your skeleton also helps your internal and fragile body tissues. The, eyes,, lungs and spinal cord are all protected by your skeleton. Your cranium ( ) protects your brain and eyes, the ribs protect your and and your vertebrae (spine, backbones) protect your spinal cord.
Movement Bones provide the structure for to attach so that our bodies are able to. are tough inelastic bands that attach to. What is a bone made of? A typical bone has an layer of or bone, which is very strong, dense and. Inside this is a layer of bone, which is like honeycomb, lighter and slightly flexible. In the middle of some bones is jelly-like bone, where new cells are constantly being produced for the. Calcium is an important that bone cells need to stay strong so keep drinking that low-fat milk! How do I keep my bones healthy? Bones need regular to stay as as possible. Walking, jogging, running and other activities are important in keeping your bones strong and. Riding your bike,, soccer, gymnastics, baseball, dancing, skateboarding and other activities are all good for your. Make sure you wear or use the proper like a helmet, kneepads, shin guards, mats, and knee pads to keep those bones. Strengthen your skeleton by drinking and eating other products (like low-fat cheese, frozen yogurt, and ice cream). They all contain, which helps bones and become strong.
Human Skeletal System Science, level: Middle What is the Skeletal System? Your skeletal system is all of the bones in the body and the tissues such as tendons, ligaments and cartilage that connect them. Your teeth are also considered part of your skeletal system but they are not counted as bones. Your teeth are made of enamel and dentin. Enamel is the strongest substance in your body.
How does the Skeletal System help us? Support The main job of the skeleton is to provide support for our body. Without your skeleton your body would collapse into a heap. Your skeleton is strong but light. Without bones you'd be just a puddle of skin and guts on the floor. Protection Your skeleton also helps protect your internal organs and fragile body tissues. The brain, eyes, heart, lungs and spinal cord are all protected by your skeleton. Your cranium (skull) protects your brain and eyes, the ribs protect your heart and lungs and your vertebrae (spine, backbones) protect your spinal cord. Movement Bones provide the structure for muscles to attach so that our bodies are able to move. Tendons are tough inelastic bands that attach muscle to bone. What is a bone made of? A typical bone has an outer layer of hard or compact bone, which is very strong, dense and tough. Inside this is a layer of spongy bone, which is like honeycomb, lighter and slightly flexible. In the middle of some bones is jelly-like bone marrow, where new
cells are constantly being produced for the blood. Calcium is an important mineral that bone cells need to stay strong so keep drinking that low-fat milk! How do I keep my bones healthy? Bones need regular exercise to stay as strong as possible. Walking, jogging, running and other physical activities are important in keeping your bones strong and healthy. Riding your bike, basketball, soccer, gymnastics, baseball, dancing, skateboarding and other activities are all good for your bones. Make sure you wear or use the proper equipment like a helmet, kneepads, shin guards, mats, and knee pads to keep those bones safe. Strengthen your skeleton by drinking milk and eating other dairy products (like low-fat cheese, frozen yogurt, and ice cream). They all contain calcium, which helps bones harden and become strong.
Directions: Label the bones. All bones must be spelled correctly. Look back in your notes.
Directions: Cut apart the skeleton and attach the bones correctly. When completed, neatly label each bone.
Post-test: Name: The Skeletal System 1. What organs give the body shape and support? a. Muscles b. Bones c. Intestines 2. What bones protect the spinal cord? a. Vertebrae/Spinal Column b. Ribs c. Cranium 3. Where are blood cells produced? a. The Heart b. The Veins c. The Bones 4. Which mineral is stored in our bones? a. Calcium b. Iron c. Zinc 5. What organs allow the body to move in different ways? a. Bones b. Skin c. Muscles 6. What is the tissue called that produces blood cells? a. Blood marrow b. Blood cell tissue c. Bone marrow 7-9. List 3 functions of your skeleton system List 2 ways that you can keep your bones healthy.
