1 THE BEAR CLAW January 2011 Los Padres Council, BSA ORDER OF THE ARROW, CHUMASH LODGE Chiefly Speaking Greetings Arrowmen! It is my absolute pleasure to serve as your new Chumash Lodge 90 Lodge Chief! As some of you already know, our previous Lodge Chief, Keith Avery, was elected and is now serving as our Section s Vice-Chief. Keith did a phenomenal job while running the Lodge, and I am sure that his leadership abilities will continue to shine in his new Section position! As your new Lodge Chief, there are multiple things I look forward to doing as I continue to lead our Lodge in the right direction. However, there are a couple of key items that I believe are of the most importance: First and foremost, I feel that the only way out Lodge Adviser s Corner [Continued on Page 4.] Welcome to the New Year Arrowmen! I hope that all of you had a wonderful Holiday break from school and work to be able to spend time with your families and friends and reflect on all that you have to be thankful for. I also hope that the New Year has gotten off to a great start for all of you. While the Lodge had an outstanding year last year, helping to celebrate the Centennial of Scouting in America in [Continued on Page 2.] Inside this issue: Lodge Flap History Project 3 Fall Fellowship Returned s 4 Lodge Calendar of Upcoming Events 5 High Adventure Activities in OA 6 Lodge History Project 7 Order of the Arrow Los Padres Council 4000 Modoc Road Santa Barbara, CA Phone: (805) ; Fax: (805) chumash90@cox.net Bechtel River Gorge 7

We have much to do in the coming year to serve the Council and our Units, and to prepare for hosting the Section W4N Conclave at Rancho Alegre in September. Now is the time for us to organize and prepare for the important work ahead. One of the best ways that you can help is to continue being active in your Chapters and in the Lodge. Make the time to attend your monthly Chapter meetings. Commit now to attending at least three Lodge events in the coming year. Volunteer to server on a Unit Election Team in January, or to help put on Arrow of Light Ceremonies for Cub Packs in your area in February and March. In this way you can spread the word about, and serve as an example of, the high ideals of service and cheerfulness that are the hallmark of our Order. Commit to serving as your Chapter's representative to one of the Lodge Committees: Activities (help run the Ordeals), Service (help plan and implement our services projects for the Council), Camping Promotions (help design and publish promotional materials), Communications (help produce the Bear Claw, or work on the website), Ceremonies (learn the parts, wear the regalia, conduct the ceremonies to leave a lasting impression), Membership (help keep our membership string and growing), or Finance (help manage the Lodge Trading Post, keep track of the Lodge finances and suggest worthy expenditures). Another way that you can help is to stay connected and in touch with the Lodge, so that you know what is going on, by checking the Lodge website periodically, or joining the Lodge Facebook group. Hosting the Conclave is a great honor, and we want to put our best foot forward to be the most cordial and accommodating hosts that we can. For that we will need lots of hands to help with managing all of the logistics for housing, food, training sessions, games, and the shows. Your LEC will be working hard all year to help set the course, but it will take the help of each and everyone of you to help turn those plans into reality. I know that we can count on you. For those of you who are eligible for the Brotherhood Honor, I strongly urge you to commit to sealing your membership in the Order by taking this next step. The Lodge can only grow stronger on the basis of the strength of commitment of it's members to stand for the highest ideals of Scouting, and to their commitment to be active in the Lodge - and one of the best ways to do so is to attain the Brotherhood Honor upon attaining eligibility. Finally, if you have friends who have been members of the Lodge, but have allowed their membership to lapse, please encourage them to renew their membership by paying their 2011 dues. If their dues are not current, they forfeit the right to wear the Lodge flap on their uniform, they may not represent the Lodge at Troop, District, or Council events (including wearing their sash of membership), and they may not participate in Lodge or Chapter activities. If you know a brother who has not renewed their membership by paying their dues, be a brother and encourage them to do so. I look forward to seeing all of you at the Scout-O-Rama in February. Yours in Brotherhood, George Michaels Lodge Advisor, Chumash Lodge 90

3 JANUARY 2011 Page 3 Wanted Information about Lodge Flap History Brother Chris Hagerty recently submitted a request to the Lodge regarding the different Lodge flaps and patches that the Lodge has issued over the years. He would like to know the name of the designer, the quantity printed, the year of issuance. This is a great idea that maybe you might be able to help. For example the most recent Lodge Flap was designed by Chris Hagerty and modified slightly by former Lodge Chief Keith Avery based on a concept of replicating the California State Flag. 400 copies of the flap were issued in the first printing released in July Help us fill in the blanks. Send any information you may have to Chumash Lodge 90, Rancho Alegre, 2680 Highway 154, Santa Barbara, CA Fall Fellowship A lot happened at the Fellowship that kept your officers and advisers moving from meeting to meeting. First, there was the Vigil Ceremony for 3 of the 4 Vigil members elected by the Lodge last year. Receiving Vigil Honors were Logan Michaels, Ed Zuchelli, and Mike O Neil. Brent Jones who was away on Air Force TDY will be recognized soon. The Section Retreat and Planning Meeting for next year s conclave at Rancho Alegre also occurred this weekend with many of the Section attendees staying and assisting at other events as well. The Section was quite impressed with the facility and our plans for the Conclave. At 11 am we started our Lodge Leadership Development (LLD) which was well attended by lodge and chapter officers and many new OA members from this year s ordeals. Training courses included sessions on conducting a meeting and the Lodgemaster program. Our annual banquet and installation of officers began at 5:30 pm with a great dinner prepared by the Camp Staff. After dinner the new Lodge Officers for were sworn in. Last year s officers and advisers were recognized with presentation of certificates. Arrowman of the Year awards were presented to incoming Lodge Chief Kevin Hays and Associate Adviser Wayne Rascati. Following the dinner there was a Lodge Executive Committee meeting (LEC) at which the calendar and budget for 2011 were presented and approved. To those of you who are already members of the Chumash Lodge 90 Facebook group, this is a request that you invite other Lodge members who may be your friends on Facebook to join the group as another way to communicate Lodge information and publicize Lodge events.

4 Page 4 THE BEAR CLAW It is extremely important Unit Elections are completed by the end of January. Chiefly Speaking (continued from Page 1) can run successfully is if we are running on all cylinders. This means that all five of our Chapters need to have Chapter Chiefs who are running their Chapters efficiently and proficiently, and I am happy to report that all 5 of our Chapters currently have Chapter Chiefs who are doing an excellent job! I even look forward to being able to attend the different Chapter Meetings in the next few months and see for myself what you guys do during your monthly meetings! Second, I plan on following in the footsteps of Keith in looking to achieve Quality Lodge once again in 2011! We have received this awesome award for the past three years now, and I do not see any reason why we should not make it four! It will be challenging, but I know that together we can and will achieve this goal. Third and final, I ask all of you to help your Chapter in both your Unit Elections and other important upcoming ceremonies, such as Arrow of Light ceremonies. It is extremely important Unit Elections are completed by the end of January, so now is the time to start if you have not already! (special shout out to Milimol-Pa-Khus for having a head start on the Unit Election Process) Again, I thank you for the outstanding job you all have done this past year, and I urge you to do the same if not better this next one! I hope of all you are having an excellent and blessed holiday season! Remember-You are the Lodge! Yours in Brotherhood, Kevin Hays Returned s: Where are these Brothers? 7 JANUARY 2011 Page 7 Lodge History Project In 2015 OA Lodges throughout the country will be celebrating the centennial of the founding of the Order. In preparation for that event, we are collecting the history of the two lodges that formed the current Chumash Lodge 90. Thanks to some generous members of the Canalino Lodge 90, we have a fairly good history of that Lodge from its founding in We still would welcome any pictures, brochures, programs, newsletters, whatever to fill in that picture. Unfortunately, our history of Chumash Lodge 304 is minimal. We don t even know the names of most of the Lodge Chiefs and Officers. The Lodge was founded in Can you help? Photocopies are very much appreciated. Again, any programs, brochures, lists are welcome. We also would welcome members contacting us about past recipients of the Arrowman of the Year Award and the Founders Award. Somewhere along the way the custodian of this information failed to pass the list along to their successor. All contributions will be duly noted in the Bear Claw Much of our record keeping is now made easier through the LodgeMaster program where information can be stored online and referred to by officers and advisers in the Lodge. As part of our Lodge History Project we look forward to the placing of a time capsule with all this information at each one of our two Scout Camps Rancho Alegre and Camp French. This will be done in 2015 as part of our a Lodge s Centennial celebration. The first Sundance was held in 1945 held in conjunction with the first Area U Conference (Predecessor to Area 12 E). Bechtel River Gorge High Adventure Site From the Associated Press CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) More than $100 million has been donated toward construction of a Boy Scouts of America adventure camp and the permanent home of the group's national jamboree in southern West Virginia, Scouts officials announced Friday. Ground was broken on the 10,600 acre project Friday. The camp will take This issue we would like to recognize. Bob Condor Burtness for his contribution of a photocopy of the 1946 handmade Sundance Patch. This was done before the days of comadvantage of the New River Gorge National River and the area's recreational opportunities, including whitewater rafting, mountain biking and rock climbing. Officials said the project will be completed in time to host the national jamboree from July 15 24, [Continued on Page 8.]

8 BROTHERHOOD OF CHEERFUL SERVICE BECHTEL PRESERVE HIGH ADVENTURE SITE [Continued from Page 7.] Reprint from Mustang, Western Region OA Newsletter The Scouts' 100th anniversary was marked at this year's jamboree in Fort A.P. Hill, Va. The jamboree attracts nearly 30,000 Scouts from around the United States and 12,000 staff and volunteers. The new camp, being built in Fayette County between Glen Jean, Prince and Mount Hope, will complement existing Scout adventure bases in Minnesota, New Mexico and Florida. Scout officials said the camp also will be a contender to host the 2019 World Scout Jamboree, which is held every four years. The event will be held in Sweden in 2011 and in Japan in Construction at the Summit stopped just long enough for the official groundbreaking ceremony, Oct. 22, Retired engineering and construction magnate Stephen Bechtel Jr. kicked off the project a year ago with a $50 million gift. The camp is being called The Summit Bechtel Family National Scout Reserve. Among the additional gifts announced Friday was a $25 million donation from the Suzanne and Walter Scott Foundation of Omaha, Neb. Walter Scott Jr., former CEO of Omaha based construction contractor Peter Kiewit Sons' Inc., said his success in business had its roots in the Boy Scouts. "I enjoyed the opportunity to learn new things, I enjoyed the camaraderie with my fellow Scouts, and I especially enjoyed the camping," Scott said. "The love and respect for the outdoors and our natural environment that Scouting instilled in me continues to this day." More than $20 million in construction contracts have been awarded on the project, which is expected to generate 600 jobs. Ceremonies Seeks Participants Your Chumash Lodge ceremonies team had a very successful performance at this years section conclave! Thanks to the help of the ceremonies team and its advisors, we took second place in the Pre-Ordeal Ceremony at conclave on September 25th. The team is looking for new members to participate in Ordeals and other ceremony functions. We are building multiple ceremony teams so that we can give everybody who wants to an opportunity to perform in a ceremony. Our next meeting will be held on January 23, If you are interested in participating in the ceremonies team, please contact me at alexhascall10@aol.com or to get the directions to our next practice. Yours in brotherhood, Alex Hascall Lodge Ceremonies Chairman
