1 January - February 2019 The Courier January February 2019 From the President Happy New Year! Well, here we are at the start of another new year and lots of things are brewing at the Center. After what has been a hectic (to say the least) closure to 2018, I'm pleased to say that things are starting to fall into place. Expect 2019 to bring some new approaches to how we do business -- and to see some "oldies, but goodies" return. Oaks North Community Center 55+ Community Board of Directors Meetings Wednesday, Jan 16, 2019 At 10:00 AM Wednesday, Feb 20, 2019 At 6:00 PM **In the Auditorium** Executive Sessions are held the day before the Regular Session at 3:00 p.m. The Executive Session Agenda items are identified on the Regular Session Agenda Community Center Normal Hours 7:30 AM - 10:00 PM Locker Room closes 9:30 PM Swimming Pool/Spa closes 9:00 PM Center Office Hours: Monday - Thursday 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM Friday 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM Closed Saturday & Sunday Holiday hours are available at Oaks North Dr. San Diego, CA There will be many opportunities for you to participate in "running" the Center. For example, keep an eye out for calls for folks to help put The Courier together; or maybe to prepare the bi-annual mailing of Age Verification forms. If you have office experience, perhaps you'd like to help out with greeting visitors. And there will, no doubt, be a need sometimes for people to help putting on some of our activities. If you have a skill that you think we could use, let us know. If you need something to keep you busy, we'll be happy to oblige! We'd also like to hear from you about things/features you'd like to see in The Courier. You'll see a few that we came up with elsewhere in this issue. Oaks North is YOUR community, what do you want to know about? Georgie Deno, President, ONCC Board of Directors INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW Here's a new feature in the Courier where some of those nagging questions you have in your mind just might be answered. If you have a question for a future issue of The Courier, drop a note to one of the Board members listed in the next article below. Q: Why aren't members allowed to engage in comment about topics during the Board meeting? A: The answer is right there in the last two words of the question. A board meeting is a meeting of the Center's board of directors, not a meeting of the members. By statute, members can observe the board conduct business but they do not have a right to participate in the board's discussions and votes. The president can, however, invite comments from the audience on particular items of business if she so chooses. This is at the discretion of the board. Here's a list of the addresses of the current board members. We're happy to hear from you. 2 January - February YOU CAN HELP SAVE THE CENTER $$$ It costs approximately $1, to print and mail The Courier every two months. (Holy cow, that adds up to about $8, a year!) There are two ways you can help the Center to cut this cost. 1. Sign up for The Courier to come to you by . It's easy to do -- just drop by the office and fill out the consent form. (As an added bonus of doing this, you'll also get periodic s reminding you of upcoming events.) 2. Yikes, we've heard that some of you who get The Courier by also ask to have it mailed to you in hard copy. That practice equals extra, unnecessary cost coming out of the Center coffers. FYI, all addresses are held in a secure database and are never shared with any kind of solicitors. We hate Spam just as much as you do. looking for great ideas for our Oaks North Website Your Planning Committee wants to know what kind of features you think the soon-to-be-upgraded website should include. Send a note to lydia.oncc@gmail.com with your idea. Educators and Friends Social Group December was a very busy month for our group! First we went to see The Patsy Cline Show which was very good. 7 January - February A Few Resolutions for The Body and Mind By Lisa Marie Oakes, CMT In this season of resolutions and fresh starts you can help yourself succeed by setting small specific goals that help you feel good and are also good for you! If you read the most common lists of resolutions you ll find a few vague favorites like Get In Shape, Be More Social, Do More for Myself, Keep a Journal and the like. These are great aspirations but unless they are broken down into specific, achievable goals it s likely that they will just end-up on the list again next year. By setting smaller goals, scheduling the activity or appointment and following through you are making progress towards your resolution and also learning to reap the rewards of your long term goals and feel the pride of moving in the right direction. (Hint: checking off small goals a little at a time helps you keep going!) If focusing on your physical health is on your list this year, consider making an appointment for a massage with a licensed therapist.. It s a proven way to reduce stress, increase circulation, lower blood pressure, help process grief and more. Massage at ONCC 1st and 3rd Thursday by Appointment with Lisa Marie Oakes, CMT Massage $65/60 Minute. $35/30 Minute Guided irest Yoga Nidra Meditation 5 Week Series January 21, 28 February 4, 11 and 18th $25 for the entire Series or $7 Drop-in Call or Lisa Marie Oakes, CMT or lisaoakes@massaegtherapy.com Thank you Oaks Nor th Members! Once again our Angel Tree with the Salvation Army, benefitting seniors in need and the annual food drive with the North County Interfaith Council were a great success! You helped brighten the season!
