A new board will be elected, with returning incumbents, new candidates and few remaining on the board to serve another year. Oaks North Leadership opportunities includes serving your community, understanding the Common Interests Business structure along with serving alongside a team of men and women who spend volunteer time improving life for members of the community. It has been a pleasure and great experience working with present board members, their guidance has been instrumental in making significant changes in the financial and corporate structure. I will miss those members who are leaving, you have added life to this job, you have challenged me and I appreciate your leadership. The remaining and the newly elected board members will help develop business stability and implement change where necessary. Board applications are due June 2, Meet the Candidate Night is in July 13th, make an effort to find out about the person vying for your votes. Please vote! If you don t want to vote, would you please at the very least send in your signed envelope so that it may count towards meeting our quorum needs to hold the Annual Meeting. Happy Anniversary! - This May 17 th will mark my 1 year anniversary with Oaks North Community Center. I can t believe it s been a whole year! As a business entity we have accomplished so much in a years time. Many thanks to the Oaks North Staff, Board, Committees and Members for making my year rewarding, productive, and fun! Happy Mother s Day! We are all products of motherhood in one form or another. Either we have a mother and/or we are a mother. Until I became a mother, I had no clue what daunting tasks a mother experiences. There were times I didn t appreciate her counsel. Sometimes I open my mouth and my mother comes out. I was a stay-at home mom in the early stages of raising my children I became a nurse, teacher, accountant (cutting coupons, balancing budgets), a negotiator, costume designer, housekeeper, chef extraordinaire, chauffer, prayer warrior, navigator, play mate, disciplinarian, event coordinator and much more. Raising my own children I have concluded that being a mother is learning about the strengths I didn t know I had and dealing with fears I didn t know existed to give what I didn t know I could give. Mother s Day is a time to celebrate all Mothers, those who are no longer with us and for those Mothers we are still fortunate to share this life with. Have a Fabulously Happy Mother s Day! Effective July 1, 2017 we will have an Oaks North Members only web portal available. The link for the member portal will be posted online on our current Oaks North web page very soon. On the member portal you will be able to access and submit forms, see special announcements, view the Center calendar and much more. We re excited to bring you this new website! In more exciting news, Members will have the ability to pay their Community Center dues online this year. Many of you have requested this convenient way of paying your yearly dues so we have recently set up this new system. The online payment link will be available along with the new Member portal at very soon! Cheers! Nina Stanley CMCA, AMS

2 Page 2 Spotlight on Oa ks North M embers World Tra vele rs In this beautiful part of San Diego a place that can seem like heaven on clear warm days live two of the most gracious and warm people, Lidia and Leo Kotlyar. The journey to Rancho Bernardo had its challenges that were nothing short of life-threatening events. Their trek took them from living literally off the land in the backwoods of the Ukraine near Odessa. If you get a chance to meet them while they visit the Oaks North Community pool in the mornings be sure to take note of their enthusiasm for life! Just to meet them is a wonderful experience because they generate positive feelings that will change you! Odessa, Ukraine brought to us the Kotlyars! If you are ever driving along Paseo del Verano Norte early in the morning keep your eyes open for them. They walk to the pool every morning for physical fitness and travel the world for cultural fitness! Past Article Quiz: Name the person that has been highlighted in a past Spotlight Story and win a useful prize. Call on or after May 8 th, Hint: WWII veteran and a foxhole. Contributed by Andrew Palumbo F r o m t h e P r e s i d e n t Dear Friends and Neighbors The Planning Committee is developing a Member Orientation Program to help new residents learn about our robust and diverse facilities and activities. New members will be sent a welcome letter and an invitation to our orientation program. Each participant will receive a goodie bag filled with useful items and facts. The orientation program will be held on third Wednesday of each month at 6:30 PM except in the months when a Sunday brunch is held. In these months, the orientation meeting will be held at 1:00 PM immediately following the brunch. This orientation will include a review of our facilities and an explanation of how to access and use each. In addition, a list of all our activities, clubs and groups will be provided. Each club will be invited to describe their programs and to encourage new members to join their group. New members and residents will also be invited to participate in our various volunteer activities such as working in the library or serving on the Activities Committee. We hope to inspire them to become active in our center. To effectively launch the orientation program, we need your help! We are seeking members to act as mentors or docents. Diane Gray, (a new tour leader but frequent traveler with us) has created a brand new trip that has probably never been done by any of the other local travel companies around here. It is a trip to the Goldstone Deep Space Communication Complex Tracking Station. Please read about it in the Trip Sheet enclosed with the Courier, and contact Diane. Our May regular monthly program will be about hiking across England by Johne and Cathy Sanders who have actually accomplished this trek.
