The second step is acceptance. Nathaniel Branden The air is crisp, the evenings get darker sooner and the smell of fall is coming our way. We ve had some changes that I believe are benefits to the quality of living for the enjoyment of Oaks North Residents who frequent our Center. We ve added two new staff members. Some of you have met Eddie, our Maintenance Technician. Eddie is responsible for updating the Center s many aging components and repairing sidewalks posing trip and fall safety issues. He comes with many years of HOA maintenance experience and possesses a high skill set which includes: concrete, masonry, plumbing and pipe installation, journeyman carpentry skills, electrical wiring installation, drywall and framework, and is certified in mold/remediation. His presence will allow Greg to continue his excellent care of our custodial staff and mainta i n t h e cleanliness a nd functionality of our facility, and also allow Greg to resume a normal work schedule with much earned and needed time off. Walt is our newest staff member. He works in the custodial department under Greg s supervision and comes with many years of custodial and janitorial experience. He has worked in many churches where a wide variety of events has provided him with the set-up and tear-down of events. Both new staff members have great attitudes and work ethic and we are happy they are with us. They are an addition to our already outstanding Oaks North Staff. We are excited about the future. Our custodial and maintenance staff will be sporting new uniforms; not only will they look sharper but the savings add up to approximately $900+ for this year alone. The uniforms are durable and washable and will enhance the friendly and clean appearance of our staff. The Board is in the planning stages for the library remodel which will include fresh paint, new flooring, new lighting, freshening up the shelves and new HVAC units. The fitness center, upstairs men s and women s bathrooms and woodshop remodels are also in discussion. Oaks North Community Center will have a fresher, newer appearance and updated exercise equipment, which will increase safety for our members. The audit has been completed and will be mailed to you shortly. The Holiday Season will engage the annual food drive for needy families and the Angel Tree. Look for both of these in November. The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention. Oscar Wilde Nina Stanley CMCA, AMS Spotlight on Oaks North Members Braveheart of Oaks North! How many times have we run into folks around town or at the local Community Center without taking a few brief moments to really meet them? Such was the case when we first met Bruce Wagenseller at the Oaks North Community Center pool. He struck us as an overly boisterous personality and possibly someone we would not want to get to know. As time progressed, Bruce began to warm up to our presence at the Community Center. The more we got to know him and his better half Helen, the more we were taken by this special man and Helen. Braveheart (that great movie starring Mel Gibson) depicts a strong character who does not fear anyone or anything; this describes Bruce and Helen of Oaks North. Bruce is a veteran of WWII who served in the Philippines as an instructor for the Red Cross to rebuild that country s human infrastructure from 1945 to Bruce met with trying events then during WWII and many situations thereafter and never backed down! We are all better for meeting and getting to know Bruce and Helen Wagenseller. Contributed by Andrew Palumbo

2 November December 2016 Page 2 From the P res ident Dear Friends and Neighbors Thank you for your recent vote on our proposed external bathroom. Two thirds of the votes were in favor of adding a restroom for use downstairs. The Board will be tabling this project and revisit it next year. With renovations of the library and fitness center being planned, we want to pace our construction projects to ensure the highest quality of work. Look for updates on our website as we begin to move forward. The membership of our Board Committees has been selected and they are already at work serving our community. If you see these folks, please thank them for their efforts on your behalf. Activities: Beverly Starkey, Chair; Cleona Jaekle; Barbara Liebowitz; Sheila Monk; Nora Robie; Jim Starkey; Melinda Stevens; Judy Tatom and Opal Johnson Budget and Finance: Frank Auwarter, Chair; Jeanne MacLaren; Chuck Nesejt and Jerry Vink. The form can be found either on our website (under forms) and in the office. Let s help save the cost of postage! Thank you. Have a wonderful and safe Thanksgiving; Hanukah; Christmas and New Year. Jeanne MacLaren As you know, our facility is aging and major repairs and C h a n g e s A r e C o m i n g renovations have not been done in many years. Although our staff has done a great job with upkeep, our facility is showing its age. After years of planning, Oaks North is ready to begin much needed repairs and renovations. The Board has voted to conduct a comprehensive remodel of our aging facilities. If anyone has experience in interior design and would like to volunteer to help please let the office staff know. Beginning in the next few weeks you can expect the following work to be done: The replacement and relocation of the aging heating and air-conditioning systems in the Fitness Center and Library. This equipment has reached the end of its useful life. The cost will be $52,855. The replacement of an exterior beam on the pergola above the pool covers for $4,590. Renovation of the library including opening the ceiling to the original design, replacement of the flooring to laminate ceramic (wood appearance) plank tile. This will provide for smoother walking, improved sanitary condition, and easier maintenance for the staff. The cost is $78,109. Expansion of the fitness center into part of the woodshop that is underused and replacing the carpet with rubber mat flooring. The cost will be $20,196. Renovation of the existing exterior restrooms between the woodshop and the fitness room to comply with ADA requirements. The cost will be $73,842. After the above expenditures, we anticipate approximately $440,000 remaining in the Reserve Fund. All of these repairs and renovations will be paid for out of our Reserves Fund, which is sufficiently funded to allow all of this work to be done. The Reserve Funds can only be used for repair, replacement and/or renovations; so no money from the operating budget will be used. The construction will take approximately 8 weeks to complete. The areas of construction will be closed and off limits to members. Access to the La Piñata and billiards rooms will be from the exterior entryways. Restrooms in the locker rooms will be available for use during the construction. If you have questions or would like more information, please do not hesitate to ask either a board member or the office staff. We apologize for the inconvenience but know the results will be worth it. Remember these updates will make our center safer, more user friendly and improve your property values. Thank you in advance for your understanding. Jeanne MacLaren

5 November December 2016 Page 5 The Travel Club has so many trips planned for 2017 that we have run out of dates to plan more. Please take time to read the enclosed trip sheet and be sure to sign up for your favorites. Most of our trips sell out quickly, so to avoid landing on a wait list, be sure to call the tour leader as soon as possible. In addition to our many trips, don't forget about our monthly meetings held at the Oaks North Community Center. In November we will show the video "The Ghost Army", A fascinating story from WW2 that many of our retired military will really enjoy. In December we will again have our annual Christmas Party with lots of treats, egg nog and entertainment by Mary's Manhattans. The leader of the Manhattans is Oaks North s own Mary Elledge. We have enjoyed Mary's group before, so if you missed her, you do not want to miss her this time. You do not have to be a member of the Travel Club to attend our meetings or go on our trips. Please join our fun-loving group. 11/02 11/09 11/16 11/23 11/30 12/14 12/21 12/28 November December Hiking Group Dixon Lake 5 Miles Moderate 300 elevation Old Coach Trail to RB Winery 5 Miles Moderate 700 elevation Daley Ranch Boulder Loop 5 Miles Moderate elevation Highland Valley Road Trail 5 Miles Moderate 300 elevation Bernardo Mtn 6 Miles Moderately Strenuous 1,000 elevation Mt.
