Pomegrnte peel extrt (PPE) ws evluted their ntimiroil tivity (y the gr diffusion method ginst the growth of Stphyloous ureus, Esherihi oli, Aspergillus niger nd Shromyes erevisie) nd ntioxidnt effet (y determine the oxidtive stility of sunflower oil ontining PPE). Also, to lrify the heptoprotetive effet of PPE on levels of serum lipid frtions, liver enzymes nd kidney funtions, hyperholesterolemi rt groups were fed on sl diet ontining PPE (t levels 400 or 00 mg/kg rt ody weight) nd the remining groups were positive nd negtive ontrol. The results showed tht PPE hd high polyphenoli ontent (67 mg/g) nd ws effetive ginst the growth of tested miroorgnisms nd giving inhiition zones rnged from 9.6 to 25.7 mm. The ntioxidnt tivity of PPE t levels 400 nd 00 ppm were 41.5 nd 63.4%, respetively while BHT t level 200 ppm ws 43.9%. The iologil study exhiited tht feeding hyperholesterolemi rts on sl diet ontining PPE t different levels oviously redued (P<0.05) the levels of TC, TG nd TL in rts serum y rtes from % s ompred to (C-) group ( %). Also, results indited tht the lowest levels of ALT, AST, ALP, uri id, ure nd retinine were found in hyperholesterolemi rt group fed on sl diet ontining PPE t level 00 mg/kg etween tested rt groups. It ould e onluded tht, PPE exhiited strong ntimiroil effet nd high ntioxidnt tivity. In ddition it enhned liver nd kidney funtions. Consequently this extrt might e used s multifuntionl preservtive in foods. Feeding rts on hyperholesterolemi diet for 3 weeks signifintly inresed (P<0.05) these levels to 5.76, nd 0.9 mg/d1, respetively. Feeding these rts on sl diet ontining PPE t different levels exhiited extremely lower vlues of uri id, ure nd retinine s ompred with (C-) group. In the lst few yers, n inresed ttention hs een foused on the industril wstes, espeilly those ontining residul phenols from the plnt rw mteril used. Pomegrnte peel is one of the importnt dietry soures of ntioxidnt phenolis. Qulittive nlysis of polyphenoli omposition indited tht PPE hd high mount of totl polyphenols (67 mg/g). This result is in greement with Crllo et l. [10] who studied the physil nd hemil hrteristis of 19 pomegrnte ultivrs nd found tht the mount of TP vried etween 354 nd 73 mg/g. Pomegrnte peel extrt ws tive nd effetive ginst the growth of tested miroorgnisms. Wheres, the inhiition zones rnged from 9.6 to 25.7 mm depend on type of miroorgnism. These results provide evidene for the presene of ntimiroil phenoli ompounds in PPE. These ompounds n degrde the ell wll, disrupt the ytoplsmi memrne, dmge memrne proteins nd interfere with memrne-integrted enzymes, whih my eventully led to ell deth [25]. Regrding the ntioxidnt tivity, it ould e notied tht ddition of PPE t different levels to sunflower oil smples enhned their oxidtive stility. The gretest effet ws found t level 00 ppm peel extrt s ompred to syntheti ntioxidnt. Generlly, PPE exhiit good ntioxidnt pity nd is effetive svenger of severl retive oxygen speies, due to its high levels of polyphenoli ompounds [26]. Feeding rt trils exhiited tht PPE t level 00 mg/kg rt ody weight ws le to redue the levels of TC, TG nd TL in hyperholesterolemi rt's serum y rtes 52, 47 nd 4%, respetively s ompred with (C-) group (29, 30 nd 2%, respetively). The urrent study found mrked effet of PPE on rt liver funtions tht deresed ALT, AST nd ALP y 1 to 1.5-fold ompre to (C+) group. These results re in greement with Toklu et l. [27], who studied the effet of hroni dministrtion of PPE on liver firosis indued y ile dut legtion in rts nd found tht serum ALT nd AST were signifintly deresed y PPE tretment. These indite tht pomegrnte peel preserved the struturl integrity of the heptoellulr memrne nd liver ell rhiteture whih is onfirmed y histopthologil studies [2, 29]. Regrding the levels of uri id, ure nd retinine, it ould e notied tht lower levels were found in hyperholesterolemi rt group fed on sl diet ontining 00 mg/kg PPE thn other groups. 342
