Service is not just about what you do as a Lions Club member. Service is how you live your life. What you do as a Lion just shows your commitment to be a part of something bigger to make a larger impact on your community and your world. You can do some things by yourself as the author Edward Everret Hale stated I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do. So you can do things by yourself and still make a difference in your community and the world. Imagine however, if you were a part of like minded individuals who wanted to help their community? How much more could you accomplish? How much more could you do? If one person can do some things imagine how much many people could do. We need to find more like minded individuals to join us and help us to make a difference in our communities. Maybe we need to find some people who have common likes and form a branch club. They are a project of our club, members of our club that do their own projects and hold their own meetings. This group could be people with common likes, for instance a group of young people that have a common interest like the environment or or perhaps a photography club or any other special interest group. These people would form a group and do things that they would like to do to serve their community and would help us on certain projects as well. The branch clubs are members of our club until they actually charter as a full fledged Lions Club.

3 Project News Puyallup Lions Club Foundation: wwas formed several years ago as a way for us to open a few more doors and to allow for us to get more corporate sponsorships and perhaps get further opportunities for monies to come into the club. The foundation is a registered 501c3 group and as such donations to us are fully deductible. We decided that we would dedicate one of our projects towards the Foundation. We decided that our Charity Rally would be the project that would fund the foundation. Additionally we took all of our diabetes projects off of our regular budget and moved them to the Foundation. So all of the monies earned at the Charity Rally are used for our Diabetes projects. Because we have a 5011C3 Foundation we have some additional funding sources that have become available to us. We have several of our club members who have employers that make donations for work done. This goes directly to our Foundation. Another opportunity is Amazon Smile. This group is just like regular amazon but you log on to t=the Smile site instead of the regular and Amazon makes a donation to our Foundation. The sight to go to for this is as follows: Any purchases made through this site Amazon will make a small donation to the club. Finally another way to donate to the foundation is to o to our website. There is a donation button on the site that if you click it you can make a credit card donation to the foundation. This is especially a good opportunity around the holidays to make a donation to the club. As our foundation grows we will expand what we do with the monies we get from it. Eventually we would like to fund other projects through our foundation Membership Corner How do we get new members into our club? It seems like we have become stagnant and have the same people in the club and they are getting burned out and over worked. How do we infuse new blood and new ideas into the club? Younger people may not like to do meetings, So how do we get them to join our club? We have to embrace other means of communications and keeping them informed of the projects that we are doing. Social media, , and other methods must be used to keep them informed of what is happening and what is needed from them to accomplish the goals. The new Maple Valley Club meets once a month on a Saturday morning to discuss what they will be doing for the upcoming month, There is no programs, no meetings, just a gathering to gain ideas of how the will be serving their community for the upcoming month. I am not saying this is what we should do but there might be something in between whatwe are doing now and what they are doing. Another thing we need to look at is if two or three member want to do something together to help the community that is great. The days of the entire club having to work the project may be over. Perhaps next year when new look at our budget process we get more generic after our major scholarship project and go with categories like Environment, Health, Youth, Hunger, etc..

4 Upcoming Club Events Around the District Feed-In: The next feed in will be on October 20th at 6:00pm. The menu will be a traditional Turkey Dinner with all of the trimmings. Lion Kent has the sign up sheet and he will bring it to the next meeting. We will not be having a Feed-in during the month of December but will resume in January. This will allow for someone to do a special Christmas meal. Normally this section would be filled with things that would be going on around the District and Zone. Unfortunately there is very little information to be had this month. The only things that the editor is aware of upcoming is the Zone Meeting on November 6th at 6:30pm at the Old Country Buffet in Federal Way. Unfortunately the club Secretary will not be able to make this meeting because of other commitments. Tree Sale: The tree sale is rapidly approaching. We have ordered 50 more trees than last year. The lot set up will be on November 24th at 10AM and we will be unloading the truck on November 25th at 9am. We will have some assistance from a Boy Scout Troop unloading the truck but will still need all the help possible, The sale will start at noon on the 25th and go daily until we are sold out of trees. Watch for sign up sheets in the near future. The only other activity known is that the Puyallup Valley Lions are holding their annual Poinsettia sale. 5 Member News Lion Jud Carr s Wife Karen recently retired from the Pierce County Court System after forty years of service, Congratulations to Karen. PZC John Budzak Sr. wife Lorri passed away suddenly last month. She had been homebound due to medical issues for several years until recently and had been placed in an adult family home setting. Unfortunately she had a large medical issue and passed away after a short hospital stay. Lion Erika Hilderbrant has decided to join team Jankelson and do the big climb next year. She recently helped Habitat for Humanity raise funds and rappelled down the Murano building in Tacoma so now instead of rappelling down a building she will be running up the stairs. Lion Kent Sharpe and Associate Member Lion Marilynn Danby are rapidly approaching some special days in their occupational careers. Both will be bidding fond farewells and riding off into the sunset. Lion Neil Gruchalla put his house on the market, he has had at least one offer on it and I believe that he has done a tentative acceptance of the offer. Funny thing is that his house on the lake isn t quite ready yet so he may be homeless for a short time so does anyone have a place where he can park his RV? The bulletin editor would like to apologize for the tardiness of this months bulletin. There have been many issues that have arisen that were above the control of the editor and he has been working to get back to a sense of normalcy. Once again apologies. Service Shorts The Puyallup Lions Club proudly served their community in October by doing the following: Worked with Lens Crafters to provide a pair of eyeglasses for an individual. In concert with the Francis House Meals Program we fed 43 people this month providing an Italian themed meal for them. We have been participating in this program since its inception (30 years providing over 15,000 meals during this time frame.) Working with the Service Clubs of Puyallup we passed out trick or treat candies at the Mall to approximately 750 kids on Halloween. The candy was donated by the local food bank. If you do a service project for your church or any other group please contact the Secretary. Any type of community service work you do can be used.

6 Puyallup Lions Trivia The Puyallup Lions Club has been very active supporters of the Pierce County Diabetes Association. We have held screenings many times throughout the history of the club providing this service to the community. The Lions Club Health Screening Van has frequently visited the Puyallup area. It has been used during Meeker Days, at White Can Days and most recently at a local elementary school to screen students. Many of our members in the past were couriers for the eye bank. We would either pick up eye tissue at the hospitals for delivery to the Eye Bank or would pick up Corneas for transplant. The club at one point made the purchase of a Slit Machine for the hospital emergency room. This machine allowed for the physicians to look closely at the eye to remove foreign debris lodged in the eye and prevent permanent damage. International News and Notes November is Diabetes Awareness month in Lions. Our International President, is quoted as saying Lions Clubs International will not sit on the sidelines as the disease mounts. We will be in the thick of efforts to prevent and treat the disease Listed below are some facts about diabetes: November 14th, 2017 is World Diabetes Day. Diabetes is the 6th largest cause of death in the world as well as with women. 5 Million people a year are diagnosed with Diabetes. 50% of people that have the disease aren t aware that they do. 77% of people with diabetes live in low or middle income countries.
