1 FROM DISTRICT GOVERNOR - LARRY BUNTROCK Greetings. October has been a busy month. I have called on 12 clubs and want to thank each club for your warm welcome. It has been great hearing of all the wonderful things your clubs are doing for your communities and promoting Lionism. I also attended the Open House at Dakota Lions Sight and Health. They are doing a much needed job helping with eye and tissue transplants. If you have the opportunity to stop in and visit the facilities sometime, I know you would be impressed. As I wrote last month, we collected donations to help the town of Springfield following their storm. I want to report that First Vice District Governor Neil Bowes visited the Bon Homme Lions Club (Springfield) and delivered a check for $1000 to them for them to use as they see fit. There is more being collected which will be given later. Thank you to everyone that helped so far. I want to thank everyone who participated in the White Cane walk which was held in Sioux Falls. I heard there was a nice turn out of Lions. Peace Posters should all be to the Peace Poster Chairman LeeAnn Gutormson by now. She will have them judged and get the winner to me so I can take our District winner to the Multi District. I want to keep encouraging you to do the four Centennial Challenge projects, Engaging our Youth, Protecting our Environment, Sharing the Vision and Relieving the Hunger. I know we are Sharing the Vision as since July 2015 we have collected 32,925 pairs of eyeglasses and have screened 9,172 kids. Also those that have not chosen their Centennial Legacy Project, I want to encourage you to come up with something that you can work with your community to show off Lionism. As I visit your clubs, I know some are getting new members as I have installed some. But I still want to encourage everyone to still just ASK ONE. If every club just got one new member, that would be 49 new Lions. November is Diabetes Awareness Month and November 14th is World Diabetes Day. It is also Blue Glove Day. We are asked to wear one Blue Glove so people will ask us why we are wearing a Blue Glove. We can then make them aware of Diabetes. I attended the North Dakota State Convention in Rugby, North Dakota on October 28 29th. 5 Page 5 LIONS: TAKE THE BLUE GLOVE CHAL- LENGE ON WORLD DIABETES DAY! Lions Club in district 5 SE are encouraged to obtain some blue colored medical gloves from a community clinic or medical center. All Lions members are asked to wear one blue glove while completing their daily activities on World Diabetes Day, November 14, This activity is intended to increase awareness by having the public ask Lions members why they are wearing the glove. An answer would be Thank you for asking. Today is World Diabetes Day. Everyone should be checked for diabetes as it is a global epidemic. Identifying and treating it can prevent blindness, amputation, kidney failure, strokes and heart disease. People that are overweight, inactive or have a family history of diabetes or women who had gestational diabetes, are at high risk for getting diabetes. Lions can also cut out and wear a picture of kidneys, eyes, heart or legs (featured below) by attaching them to their clothing on November 14th to increase awareness of the complications that are caused by diabetes. By participating in this event Lions Clubs can increase awareness about diabetes and diabetes related blindness. For more information about World Diabetes Day contact Lion Robyn Tyler at or thestampinqueen@msn.com. DIABETES AWARENESS: FOCUS ON COMPLICATIONS OF DIABETES By Robyn Tyler, Diabetes Awareness Chairman Diabetes awareness is one of Lions Club International s signature programs. The reason Lions started to focus on Diabetes Awareness is because diabetes is the number one cause of blindness in adults in industrialized nations. Lions have worked to eradicate blindness and restore sight by providing vitamins and wash cloths to those in Africa, providing eye exams and glasses in Haiti, Mexico, and Jamaica, and by financing cataract surgeries in Ecuador, Guatemala and other countries close to the equator. Yet, in countries like the US, Canada, the United Kingdom, Finland, and France, people lose their sight daily because of uncontrolled diabetes or lack of preventative eye care for those living with diabetes. Lions can prevent blindness in our own back yard by increasing the awareness of the importance of diabetes control and prevention of complications such as diabetic eye disease, kidney failure, heart attack, stroke and amputations caused by nerve loss/disease. The focus of the District Diabetes Awareness Program this year is to increase Lions knowledge of diabetes complications. Articles, displays and activities throughout the year will focus on explaining the different complications of diabetes to include causes, symptoms, treatment and ways to prevent them from developing. Please check out the booth at this year s Fall Forum in Brandon for more information. I am also available to provide the names of speakers or may be available to speak at your club myself about a specific complication during the year. Contact me at thestampinqueen@msn.com or
