He has served on the board of directors for the past five years. Dr. Spector especially enjoys working closely with local dentists and discussing issues that may have an impact on the future of dentistry in Iowa. He serves on the board with two adjunct faculty members: Dr. Tom Peek is a trustee for the district and Dr. Sara Stuefen is on the Board of Directors. Publication by Drs. Chris Barwacz and Marcela Hernandez Featured as CE Article in Journal of Cosmetic Dentistry An article co-authored by Drs. Chris Barwacz, Dows, and Marcela Hernandez, Department of Operative Dentistry, will be featured as the continuing education article in the Spring 2013 issue of the Journal of Cosmetic Dentistry. The article details a technique to characterize both implant and other fixed interim provisional restorations for patients who exhibit a characterized dentition. The technique fosters better communication with both patients and ceramists. (See Recent Publications on page 12.)
2 Page 2 Successful 2013 James S. Wefel Symposium on Early Childhood Caries The 2013 James S. Wefel Symposium on Early Childhood Caries (ECC) was held at the College of Dentistry on Friday, April 19, There were nearly 200 attendees. The morning began with a welcome, introductions, and a tribute to Dr. Wefel, which were given by Dean David Johnsen and Associate Dean for Research, Dr. Clark Stanford. Dr. Wefel s family, including his wife, Jan; his son, Jay, wife Kara, and daughter, Sophia; and his other son, Jeff, attended the welcome and introductions. Jan Wefel was presented with a memorial plaque and flowers. The day-long symposium included several speakers: Dr. Brian Clarkson, University of Michigan School of Dentistry, who presented Redefining Cariology. Dr. Clarkson was a UI College of Dentistry faculty from Dr. Kathy Phipps, data and oral health surveillance coordinator consultant, Association of State and Territorial Dental Directors, presented Early Childhood Caries: A View from 20,000 Feet. Dr. David Drake, Dows Institute and Department of Endodontics, presented Demonstration Project ECC Study in Native American Children. Dr. Ann Griffen, Ohio State University, gave a presentation, The Oral Microbiome and its Role in ECC. Dr. Margherita Fontana, University of Michigan, presented Caries Risk Assessment and its Role in ECC. Dr. Norman Tinanoff, University of Maryland, presented Considerations of Risk Factors Related to Management of ECC. Dr. Karin Weber-Gasparoni, Department of Pediatric Dentistry, presented Role of Behavioral, Social and Psychological Dynamics in ECC. Dr. David Quissell, University of Colorado, gave Preventing Caries in Preschoolers: Testing a Unique Service Delivery Model in American Indian Head Start Programs. (Above, left to right): Dean David Johnsen, Jan Wefel, Jay Wefel, Kara Wefel holding Sophia, Jeff Wefel, and Associate Dean Clark Stanford. (Above, left to right): Dr. Brian Clarkson with Dr. Jeff Wefel during the Wefel Symposium. Dr. James S. Wefel came to the UI College of Dentistry in 1972 after receiving his PhD in physical chemistry from the State University of New York, Buffalo. He later joined the Department of Pediatric Dentistry and became a research intensive faculty in the Dows Institute for Dental Research. In 1990, Jim was appointed director of the Center for Clinical Studies and head of the division of cariology. Jim took over directorship of the Dows Institute in 1993, and in 1999, he became administrative director of the Office of Clinical Research. When the Department of Pediatric Dentistry was searching for a new head in 2007, Jim became interim head of the department. Jim received his first major grant in 1978 from the National Institute for Dental Research (now NIDCR) to study the kinetics and mechanisms of fluoride. This grant was later renewed three times. (Wefel Symposium, continued on page 3)
3 Page 3 (Wefel Symposium, continued from page 2) An intraoral crown model was developed by Dr. Wefel and a former faculty, Dr. Mark Jensen, in 1988 to measure changes in hard tissue lesions in a realistic environment. This model has been used in more than 20 studies and remains in use today. (Above): Jan Wefel receives a bouquet of flowers from Dr. Clark Stanford. (Above, right left to right): Dr. Kathy Phipps, Dr. David Drake, Dr. Karin Weber-Gasparoni, Dr. Norman Tinanoff, Dr. Ann Griffin, Dr. David Quissell, Dr. Brian Clarkson, Dr. Marguerita Fontana, and Dr. Clark Stanford. During his 40 years at the College of Dentistry, he received NIDCR, NIH, industrial and foundation funding that shaped the future of research at the dental college: an NIDCR shortterm training grant, which laid the groundwork for the College of Dentistry s current dental student research program; an NIDCR grant, which was later renewed, helped fund the College s Clinical Core Center for Oral Health Research, the only center in the U.S. to focus on older patients and those who were at high risk for oral disease; an NIH program project grant in 1984 that helped establish the Specialized Caries Research Center; a program project award that was used to study early caries detection and intervention; it was renewed in 2005 for five more years. Jim Wefel published more than 140 books chapters and journal articles. He was an invited speaker innumerable times, both in the U.S. and abroad. Over the years, Jim also mentored more than 80 MS and PhD candidates. In 2000, Dr. Wefel received the Regent s Award for Faculty Excellence. In 1997 and again in 2010, he received the prestigious International Association for Dental Research Distinguished Scientists E.W. Borrow Memorial Award. Last year, Jim was recognized by the College for his 40 years of service. He passed away September 1, 2012.
4 Page 4 (Dr. John Casko Retires, continued from page 1) Desiring the option of more variety in his career, John Casko wanted to try teaching and reasoned that if he didn t like it, he could always go into private practice. He was accepted into an NIH-funded PhD program at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine, which focused on dentists who wanted to teach. This academic experience confirmed Dr. Casko s love of teaching. In 1970, Casko accepted his first orthodontics faculty position at the University of North Carolina (UNC) School of Dentistry where he also became director of the orthodontic clinics. While at UNC, he became acquainted with a fellow faculty member, Dr. James H. McLeran, who was chairman of their department of oral surgery. In 1974, McLeran accepted a position as dean of the University of Iowa College of Dentistry and later he contacted Dr. Casko about an opening at Iowa for a new orthodontics department head. John was offered the position and in 1976, the Caskos moved to Iowa City. The transition from North Carolina to Iowa went very well. Both Chapel Hill and Iowa City are college towns and have the same atmosphere, he says. I love it here in Iowa City. During his 36 years at the College of Dentistry, Dr. Casko has enjoyed his friendships and relationships with Iowa faculty and residents, both current and former. I think the greatest satisfaction is seeing how successful the residents are. John is pleased that the last three of four presidents of the Midwest Angle Society (Edward H. Angle Society, Midwest Component) have been Iowa orthodontic graduates. You feel like you ve done something worthwhile, he adds. He is also proud of the Department of Orthodontic s prestigious Iowa Winter Orthodontic Seminar for surgical orthodontics, which is held annually in Vail, Colorado. This year, the seminar was the thirtyfourth annual event -- the longest continuously successful continuing education course on surgical orthodontics in the U.S. It s unique and provides an opportunity for oral surgeons and orthodontists to work closely together, says Dr. Casko. It also provides an occasion for our orthodontic residents to meet and work with very accomplished orthodontists and oral surgeons. During his long career, Dr. Casko has served as director, secretary/treasurer, and president of the American Board of Orthodontics as well as vice president and president of the Midwest Component of the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists. A highlight of Dr. Casko s career at Iowa was getting to know and develop a close (Above) The Casko family s cottage on Long Island. friendship with Dr. B.F. Tod Dewel. Dr. Dewel was a faculty member in the UI Department of Orthodontics from 1925 to 1929 during the establishment of Iowa s first orthodontics program. He later moved to Evanston, Illinois, where he had a private practice and continued to teach part-time at Northwestern University. During his professional career, Dr. Dewel served as editor of the American Journal of Orthodontics for ten years, director of the American Board of Orthodontics (ABO) for seven years, and was president of the ABO in (Dr. John Casko Retires, continued on page 5)
5 Page 5 (Dr. John Casko Retires, continued from page 4) In 1982, Drs. Casko and Dewel met in Chicago at a session of the Midwestern Society of Orthodontists where John gave a presentation. Dr. Dewel invited Dr. Casko to dinner and a close friendship later developed between the Caskos and Dewels, which led to Dr. Dewel donating the proceeds from his estate to establish the B.F. and Helen E. Dewel Chair in Clinical Orthodontics. Tod Dewel, says Dr. Casko, was an outstanding person, internationally known, someone who was talented, gracious and humble. In 2000, Dr. Casko was awarded the B.F. and Helen E. Dewel Endowed Chair in Clinical Orthodontics. It (Above): Sunset near their cottage on Long Island. was the first endowed chair in the College of Dentistry and he felt very honored to be named to a chair and in particular, one in Dr. Dewel s honor. In 2006, Dr. Casko was named the Jarabak Scholar in Orthodontics. In 2008, he received the Louise Ada Jarabak Memorial International Orthodontic Teachers Award from the American Association of Orthodontists Foundation. In 2009, John received the Orthodontic Legend Award from the Southern Association of Orthodontists in recognition of his extraordinary achievements in orthodontic education through teaching, research and publishing. Over the past 30 years, Dr. Casko has seen many changes in orthodontic appliances, materials, and techniques that have resulted in a more efficient treatment process. He notes that the nitinol wire patent of former UI orthodontics department head, Dr. George Andreasen, was a revolutionary change in orthodontic materials that helped shorten chair time for orthodontic patients and reduce the length of treatment. John and his wife, Bobbie, have four grown children and eight grandchildren. They will remain in Iowa after John retires and also spend time at their cottage on Long Island. John would like to visit Budapest, Hungary, where his father was born, and go back to Scandinavia. In his spare time, John also enjoys reading World War II novels and biographies. Bobbie adds, John will also have to deal with his love/hate relationship with golf! The College of Dentistry and Department of Orthodontics wish Dr. John Casko a wonderful retirement and (Above): View of swans offer best wishes for the future. in nearby nature preserve.

Max and Brittany attended the recent annual ASDA session in Washington, D.C., which welcomed 470+ ASDA members from 61 U.S. dental schools, the highest attendance ever. Dr. Christopher Barwacz Invited Presenter at 2013 Annual PEERS Meeting Dr. Christopher Barwacz, Dows, was an invited presenter at the 2013 Annual PEERS (Platform for Exchange of Education, Research, and Science), which was held in Chicago, IL, April 4-6. His presentation was, The Role of Transmucosal Concavities in the Enhancement of Facial Peri-Implant Soft- Tissue Architecture. Dr. Barwacz s talk discussed the role that the facial transition zone profiles of both interim, screw-retained, and definitive CAD/CAM abutments have in the maintenance of peri-implant mucosa.

Dr. Axel Ruprecht Re-Elected Secretary-Treasurer of the UI Triangle Club for a Twentieth Straight Term Dr. Axel Ruprecht, Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine, has once again been re-elected secretary-treasurer of the UI Triangle Club. Dr. Ruprecht s response: I left town to hide out in Chicago and thus did not even attend the meeting. This is Dr. Ruprecht s twentieth straight term undoubtedly represents an impressive record of officership compared with the length of time served by officers in other UI campus organizations. Membership in the Triangle Club, the UI Faculty Club, is open to all faculty, UI administrative officers, and interested members of the community upon application and payment of the annual dues ($13.00 per single member, $20.00 per couple).
