Competency Level: Beginner Jeff Hartman PT, DPT, MPH, is an assistant professor of physical therapy at Northwestern University in Chicago, IL. He participated in the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics and Meriter Hospital Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residency in 2001 and received his Masters in Public Health from the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health in He also received a certificate in Global Health from the University of Wisconsin and has gone on to blend his physical therapy and public health backgrounds into an extensive global health resume. He was instrumental in the founding of a community-based rehabilitation program in Southern Belize and has been a dedicated member and leader within the American Physical Therapy Association s Global Health Special Interest Group since am Noon; 2-5 pm 7 Contact Hours Vestibular Rehabilitation in the Orthopedic Setting - Day 1 ***Full day Thursday and half day Friday attendance is required. Course limited to 48 participants.*** Complaints of dizziness are not uncommon in the orthopedic setting. Unfortunately, common events, such as a whiplash injury, can produce the trifecta of dizziness: central and peripheral vestibular disorders, and cervicogenic dizziness, all in the same patient. The purpose of this 1½-day course is to equip the physical therapist with the knowledge and skill to identify when, given a patient who is complaining of dizziness, a dangerous condition exists; to recognize common vestibular presentations; to differentiate these presentations from musculoskeletal conditions that may produce similar symptoms; to manage the basic issues well; and to refer appropriately when needed. Topics to be covered include the differential diagnosis and management of conditions such as concussion, BPPV, and cervicogenic dizziness. An emphasis will be placed on determining which conditions are appropriate for PT interventions and which require referral; in the case of the latter, discussion will include to whom the most appropriate referral would be. Physical therapists practicing in orthopedic, sports, acute and subacute settings will benefit from this course. PTs with a background in vestibular rehabilitation but who are less comfortable managing the musculoskeletal issues in the patients complaining of dizziness will also find the course useful. Competency Level: All Rob Landel, PT, DPT, OCS, has been treating vestibular patients for nearly 15 years, at USC Physical Therapy Associates, the faculty practice he founded in He has taught orthopedic physical therapy, vestibular rehabilitation, balance retraining, and fall prevention to physicians and physical therapists across the US, Europe, Asia and Australia. He has presented at professional meetings locally, nationally and internationally. He is on the faculty of the Vestibular Rehabilitation Competency Course series sponsored by Emory University and the APTA, directed by Susan Herdman, PT, PhD. He is an associate professor of clinical physical therapy in the Department of Biokinesiology and Physical Therapy at the University of Southern California. A graduate of USC in 1984 with a master s degree, he earned his OCS in 1992, and his DPT degree in Thrust and Non-Thrust Manipulation of the Cervical Spine with Integration of Exercise Lecture This course will focus on the manual physical therapy examination, classification, and treatment of cervical spine disorders with integration of an evidence-based manual physical therapy approach to address select cervical disorders. Emphasis will be placed on instruction of thrust and non-thrust manipulation techniques with integration of specific therapeutic exercises to address impairments of the cervical spine. Upon completion of the course attendees will be able to describe the functional anatomy and kinematics of the cervical spine, identify the classification of cervical spine disorders and describe the components of each disorder, perform a comprehensive examination of the cervical spine, perform treatment procedures for the cervical spine including thrust and non-thrust manipulation, isometric manipulation, and exercise instruction, and describe the evidence to support an impairment based manual physical therapy approach for treatment of cervical spine disorders. ***PTs Only. Previous coursework in orthopaedic and manual physical therapy of the spine suggested.*** Competency Level: Intermediate/Advanced Ken Olson, PT, DHSc, OCS, FAAOMPT, is the president and co-owner of the physical therapy private practice Northern Rehab Physical Therapy Specialists in DeKalb, IL and is also an adjunct assistant professor for Marquette University and adjunct faculty member for Northern Illinois University. He is also a co-author of the APTA documents the Manipulation Education Manual and Position on Thrust Joint Manipulation Provided by Physical Therapists. The Patient Who Lingers Patients seek physical therapy services in hopes of having function restored and the quality of their lives improved. Most patients are eager to return to their previous lifestyles once their goals are met. There are some patients that choose to linger in our care. Some of these patients do so intentionally while others do so unintentionally. The patient who lingers will be discussed in the context of our ethical and legal obligations to the patient and to society. This course meets the four hour requirement for ethics and jurisprudence continuing education requirements. Competency Level: All Gwyneth Straker, PT, MS, professor emeritus, recently retired from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Gwyn has presented at the state and national level regarding clinical education, ethical practice, and professional behaviors. This seminar teaches you how to hire the right individuals, train them up to your standards, and retain them to grow with the practice as it grows. You will learn how to avoid making the biggest mistake most owners/directors make, which is managing your personnel based on how you feel about them personally. With this method, there is little accountability, low production, constant micro-managing and owner frustration. Attendees will also learn how to properly manage and give targets to their staff based on statistics for maximum efficiency and productivity. This seminar will answer so many personnel management related questions; whether you have been in business for years, or just starting up your practice. ***Presented in partnership between the WPTA and the WPTA Private Practice Special Interest Group.*** Competency Level: All Brian Gallagher, PT, has been practicing physical therapy now for 23 years with his most recent focus on practice management and a complete treatment approach for the entire patient. His experience of sitting on several peer review boards, lecturing to owners each week from throughout the U.S. and Canada has taught him that nothing can replace the hands on approach of working side by side with the owner in his/her own environment. Vestibular Rehabilitation in the Orthopedic Setting - Day 2 ***Full day Thursday and half day Friday attendance is required. Course limited to 48 participants.*** See Thursday listing for course description and instructor bio. The presenters will introduce strategies orthopedic therapists can use to gather a history, perform assessment, basic treatments, and when referral to a pelvic floor therapist may be most appropriate. A case based approach will be utilized to highlight these concepts. This is not a formal lab course, but key examination and treatments will be demonstrated. This course does not incorporate internal examination or treatment. This course is appropriate for physical therapists, physical therapist assistants, and students seeking to integrate concepts of orthopedic and pelvic floor physical therapy. Competency Level: All Carrie Schwoerer, MPT, OCS, received her Bachelors of Science in Biology and her Masters of Physical Therapy from Marquette University. She is a provider for WISH Women s Integrated Sexual Health Program with the Carbone Cancer Center and also a provider for the Women s Pelvic Wellness Clinic. Sarah is a member of the APTA and WPTA, as well as a member of the Section on Women s Health. 2-5 pm 3 Contact Hours Solving the Marketing Mystery: Principles that Work Every Time This course asks you to look at your prospects, as well as your own clinic, in order to truly understand the steps necessary to be successful. You and your practice are only as good as those in your community perceive it to be. This begs the question, What do referral sources want from you? First and foremost, they want to know about your practice and its reputation based upon results. Secondly, they want to establish a rapport with you. Not all PTs and PT owners have the knowledge needed to establish the right relationships with their referral sources and the general public. Fortunately, there are a variety of marketing tools available to achieve success in this area. In this seminar I ll discuss how marketing doesn t always have a one-sizefits-all approach. Learn how to assemble just the right approach for you and your office that will maximize your effectiveness in marketing to your community. In my experience, what you don t know will hold you back and if you continue doing what you re currently doing, you ll keep getting the same results. This seminar gives you new dynamic tools to allow you to think outside of the box. ***Presented in partnership between the WPTA and the WPTA Private Practice Special Interest Group.*** Competency Level: All Brian Gallagher, PT, has been practicing physical therapy now for 23 years with his most recent focus on practice management and a complete treatment approach for the entire patient.
