2 TOPICS IN EMERGENCY MEDICINE November 6-9, 2006 Hilton Financial District San Francisco, CA Topics in Emergency Medicine, now in its 35th year, is a practical review and update of emergency medicine for emergency physicians, family practitioners, internists, and pediatricians. The course covers a wide variety of adult and pediatric emergencies seen in emergency departments, urgent care and office settings. Cardiac, infectious disease, neurologic and ophthalmic emergencies are covered, as well as trauma, orthopedics, pulmonary, dermatologic and gynecologic problems. Lectures and workshops are taught by both emergency medicine physicians and specialists, and by specialists in a variety of disciplines with the emphasis on initial evaluation, treatment and indications for consultation and referral. We are proud to offer this year's course free of industry sponsorship. Topics in Emergency Medicine is presented by the Department of Medicine, Division of Emergency Medicine and is sponsored by the Office of Continuing Medical Education, University of California San Francisco School of Medicine. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this program participants should be able to: 1. Understand the latest methods for evaluation and treatment of a wide variety of emergency problems; 2. List the techniques and medications for assessment and reduction of acute pain; 3. Identify advances in the field of emergency medicine that can improve outcomes. ACCREDITATION The University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for (UCSF) Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. Pain Management and End-of-Life Care: The approved credits shown above include 5.5 credits toward meeting the requirement under California Assembly Bill 487, Pain Management and End-of-Life Care. Splinting Lorraine Petti, PA-C A review of the type of splints needed for common injuries and hands-on practice in design and application. P 4. Emergency Dental Procedures Adel Tawfilis, DDS, OMFS As anyone knows, oral pain can be some of the worst pain patients can experience. With the help of an oral surgeon, get experience with intra-oral blocks, management for tooth fractures and physical exam of the head and mouth. 5. Ultrasound-Guided Emergency Department Procedures John Stein, MD The Institute of Medicine s report on medical errors recommends the use of procedural ultrasound to improve patient safety. This hands-on workshop will familiarize you with the use of ultrasound to assist in vascular access (peripheral and central lines), identification of abscesses, and identification of subcutaneous foreign bodies. 6. Positive scans and normal anatomy will commented on, as well as review of abnormal findings. 2:00 Hands-on Scanning of the abdomen, heart and great vessels. Normal and positive models will be present, and instructors will lead participants in actual scanning.
