10 SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY The YMCA S social responsibility as a cause driven human service organization is focused on strengthening the foundation of community and that foundation is the family unit. NATIONAL HEPA STANDARDS One area of Social Responsibility assumed by the YMCA childcare department is the use of National HEPA Standards (Healthy Eating and Physical Activity) in order to reverse the obesity epidemic, prevent diabetes and lower the risk of heart disease. (CATCH) COORDINATED APPROACH TO CHILD HEALTH The CATCH Program focuses on coordinating four components, the Eat Smart school nutrition program, K-5 classroom curriculum, a Physical Education program, and a Family Program. The YMCA has implemented these four components in its After School Program. CHILD PROTECTION Child Abuse Prevention (CAP) is a top priority at YMCAs across the State of Texas. Physical, emotional and sexual abuse is prevalent in society today. The San Angelo Y trains staff and volunteers to recognize, prevent and report any form of child abuse to authorities. All YMCAs in Texas are actively participating with a leading organization to enhance and provide children with a safe environment. DROWNING PREVENTION YMCAs across Texas work every day to prevent childhood drownings. Last year Ys in Texas taught over 90,000 children how to swim. Every year the San Angelo YMCA holds Splash Week during the week of spring break for children age 3+ to learn swimming skills, water safety practices, and recovery techniques. The Ys also require children to pass a swim skills test before engaging in play at the deeper end of the pool. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE Everyone belongs at the Y, regardless of ability to pay. The YMCA turns no one away due to the inability to pay. Over 13% of all YMCA members and participants are recipients of a YMCA scholarship. Financial assistance is available for most programs and services. Financial assistance applications are available at the Welcome Center and online. Submit the application with proof of income for all wage earners in the household and expect a response within 7-10 business days Why the Y? Tell us your YMCA story, we would love to hear it.
