2 WELCOME Message Here Comes Fall! Another fantastic summer has come and gone at the TLC! Now that the kids have had their fill of summer camp fun, it s time to fall back into the exciting reality of back-to-school. Sometimes the post-summer blues can discourage kids from getting active and enjoying a triactive lifestyle once the weather cools down. Here at the TLC, we are dedicated to promoting physical literacy through active play for all the kids in the Tri- Municipal Region. Our fall program guide is jam-packed with exciting classes, lessons and drop-in activities for your little ones to enjoy, with a wide variety of opportunities for adults to get triactive as well. There s something for everyone this season, from AquaFit, to Zumba, to weight training and everything in between. One program we especially take pride in this time of year is the Red Cross School program, which is a participatory program offered through elementary schools in the Tri-Municipal Region. Students are given the opportunity to learn the basics of swimming and water safety, while teachers get to enjoy giving their classes a break from the curriculum. Read more about School on page 6. As each season comes and goes, we take pride in our ability to give families an opportunity to get triactive together at the TLC. The Shackleton family s story (page 14) is a perfect example of how sports and preschool programs at the TLC bring families together in an exciting and healthy environment. 6 Aquatics MAKE A SPLASH WITH YOUR SCHOOL! Young students in the Tri-Municipal Region have the opportunity to learn how to swim as part of their elementary school curriculum thanks to the Red Cross School program, which has been in place at the TLC since An effective way to get the little ones in the water as part of their education, the School program introduces young kids to basic water safety and stroke skills. With over 24,000 students cycling through the School program since its inception, it has proven to be very successful among students, teachers and parents alike. Parents appreciate that their kids have access to swimming lessons at a time that works for busy family schedules, teachers give their classes a refreshing break from desk work and students learn how to swim in a safe and fun environment. Donna McKean, Aquatics Program Coordinator at the TLC, says the School program is great because the aquatics complex staff is able to accommodate a large number of students with varying swimming abilities, meaning the school can bring in multiple classes at once. The kids get to be active and become more physically literate in the water. It s a great opportunity for them to learn in a different environment while burning off energy at the same time, she says. Students in the Tri-Municipal Region benefit from School at the TLC. We even have a lot of schools coming in for swimming lessons outside of this program to give their students a chance to grow in the water as they get older! To learn more about the Red Cross School program, visit or come say hi at our customer experience desk! The kids get to be active and become more physically literate in the water. It s a great opportunity for them to learn in a different environment while burning off energy at the same time.

7 Why Teachers LOVE School The reason I organize and promote the School program is because some students don t have the opportunity to participate in out-of-school activities, such as swimming, and these lessons make it more affordable and practical for the students who have working parents. It also includes all our students regardless of their abilities, giving them a chance to see that learning happens not only through reading and calculating, but through movement and play. We like to take our students during the winter to demonstrate that you can be physically active throughout the year no matter the weather. The TLC also has great staff who always help me get this program going. They are so accommodating and make sure that everyone gets what they need out of their time at the Tri Leisure Centre. Our school loves the School program because it gives the students skills necessary for them to become great swimmers! Living near the lake is a chosen lifestyle and we feel learning to swim is an essential skill to offer children in our lakeside community. The Tri Leisure Centre offers a very organized swim program and the children love the enthusiasm and excitement that their qualified instructors deliver every year. It is always a pleasure working with Donna, the Aquatics Program Coordinator, who has been very accommodating to our small school and class sizes. 15 Sports BRING FAMILIES TOGETHER at the TLC If your kids have ever played community sports with the Shackleton family, you ve likely seen super Coach Rob Shackleton hopping from the indoor field to the ice arena to coach his 10-year-old daughter Emilie s ringette game after finishing up with his 5-year-old son Callen s indoor soccer practice. Meanwhile, Karen Shackleton can be seen lacing up her 7-year-old son Zach s skates for a little fun on the leisure ice. That s just another typical Monday night for the Shackletons, who enjoy balancing their three kids schedules in a way that allows the whole family to get active at the TLC. The fact that we can have all three of our kids in programs at the same time in one facility is awesome, Karen says. Callen has soccer practice and then Emilie has to be on the ice for ringette, so basically we d go from one practice to another. As a coach of all three kids sports teams last fall, Rob would start with his son s soccer team, then after practice he would help tie skates and get on the ice for his daughter s ringette practice. The Shackletons say they appreciate the ability to coordinate their schedules so smoothly due to the TLC s multiple rinks and fields, even when their older son also has hockey. The Shackletons spend so much time at the TLC as a family that Karen says getting active has never been so convenient, and since Rob works for SMS Equipment, they are able to take advantage of corporate pricing for their memberships. Through their Health and Wellness program, SMS Equipment offers a weekly fitness class called Fit by Choice to employees and spouses at the TLC. Rob and I try to get out to that class as much as we can throughout the winter and spring, Karen says. And as if Karen wasn t busy enough with the hustle-and-bustle of kids sports, she is entering her second year as one of the directors organizing the Spruce Grove Sweetheart Ringette Tournament, which is one of the biggest ringette events in Alberta, as it hosted 64 teams and over 1,000 athletes in As for Rob, he spends his free time picking up men s league hockey games as a goalie whenever he can. Both he and Karen also volunteered at the 2015 Tour of Alberta, for which Karen was the Festival Coordinator and Rob helped with race security. The Shackletons and their busy schedules demonstrate how the TLC gives families plenty of opportunities to get active together; from preschool programs and summer camp, to hockey, soccer and ringette, there is no shortage of fun for the Shackleton children at the TLC. The TLC is a really great asset to the community since it encompasses so many different avenues of play. 24 Health & WELLNESS Wellness Knows NO LIMITS at the TLC ISSA Certified PERSONAL TRAINER Personal Trainer TANNIS Soderquist TLC EMPLOYEE for 5 months TLC MEMBER for 6 years When TLC personal trainer Tannis Soderquist received a message from the Special Olympics Speed Skating team in search of a volunteer trainer, she knew it would be a great opportunity to use her passion for wellness to help some incredible athletes achieve their goals. Since May of 2015, Tannis has been volunteering her time to train the Special Olympics Speed Skating team every week. As a personal trainer, Tannis knows a thing or two about teaching people how to get fit, healthy and confident, regardless of physical or mental ability. I love the fact that the athletes are always pushing themselves to be better, stronger and faster, she says. They are so much fun always willing to learn new things, and excelling at each specific task I put them through. Through her volunteer work, Tannis is able to encourage people not to let physical or mental disability hinder their potential to maintain a healthy and happy lifestyle. It s my job to show these athletes that just because they have a disability, that doesn t mean they can t do anything that anyone else can do. They are just as capable, and they should not feel limited. Tannis helps not only her Speed Skating team, but also every client she trains at the TLC to gain confidence in their bodies and their abilities. Her goal is to teach them how to enjoy working out by helping them reach new goals with each hour they train together. When she s not volunteering with the Special Olympics or training TLC guests, Tannis spends her time lifting weights in the gym and using the track for metabolic conditioning. From friendly coworkers to fantastic clients and countless activities, Tannis says the TLC has topped her list of places to work and do what she loves. From the time she bought her membership six years ago, Tannis has used the facilities to prepare for four bodybuilding competitions, and she also enjoys bringing her daughter along. I love the variety of things that anyone can do at the Tri Leisure Centre, she says. I like that my daughter can swim while I train, or she can come up and workout on the track with me. I also love the people I work with we all share a common goal of helping others achieve their goals. I love the fact that the athletes are always pushing themselves to be better, stronger and faster.
