Smith Memorial Lecturer Stuart S. Howards, MD Professor of Urology and Molecular Physiology and Biological Physics Stuart S. Howards received his medical degree from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. He began his training with a surgical internship at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston, followed by one year as a junior surgery resident at Boston Children's Hospital. He then spent three years as a research associate at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Bethesda, Maryland. He completed his urology residency at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital and then accepted a faculty position at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, where he has been ever since. Dr. Howards is an active leader in the field of urology. He currently serves as the Executive Secretary of the American Board of Urology (ABU), Senior Scientific Advisor to the Director of the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases of the NIH, and Treasurer of the Society of Reproductive Medicine. He is also an editor of Adult and Pediatric Urology. His memberships include the American Association of Genitourinary Surgeons and the Clinical Society of Genitourinary Surgeons. He has received many awards from the American Urological Association, including the Hugh Hampton Young Award, the Russell and Mary Hugh Scott Award, and the Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Howards clinical specialties are pediatric urology, microsurgery and infertility. His research interests focus on male reproductive physiology and pathophysiology. His extensive bibliography includes articles on basic science issues and clinical topics, and he has contributed chapters to many medical texts. We are honored to present Dr. Stuart S. Howards as our 2004 Donald R. Smith Memorial Lecturer.

The School of Medicine (UCSF) designates this education activity for a maximum of 15 category 1 credits toward the AMA Physician's Recognition Award. Smith, MD Professor of Urology, Emeritus, UCSF Dr. Donald R. Smith received his medical degree from UCSF in 1935, joining the faculty five years later as a Clinical Instructor. In 1951, he succeeded Frank Hinman, Sr., as Chairman of the Division of Urology a position he held for 25 years, training 72 residents. Dr. Smith s major clinical interests were fluid and electrolyte balance, renal physiology, reconstructive surgery (especially hypospadias repair), urinary tract infection, and pediatric urology. In 1957, he conceived and wrote the text, General Urology (now Smith s General Urology). Donald Smith s productive and exemplary career came to an end on August 15, We remember this great teacher and outstanding clinician with the 2004 memorial lecture.
