2 U C S F O T O L A R Y N G O L O G Y U P D AT E : An outstanding group of faculty will discuss technical advances in the fields of rhinology and sinus surgery, head and neck oncologic surgery, laryngology, otology/neurotology, pediatric otolaryngology, sleep apnea, and facial plastic surgery. This is a symposium dedicated to the state-of-the-art with an emphasis on new diagnostic and treatment methods, new technology, and new surgical strategies for the contemporary practice of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery. Policy, politics, government, and professional societies will also be a topic of discussion. The target audience for the course is practicing otolaryngologists. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES Upon completion of this program participants should be able to: Assess in practice the influence of human microbiome alterations on the production of inflammatory conditions such as chronic rhinosinusitis; Appraise clinical methods used in the diagnosis and treatment of streptococcal pharyngitis, and integrate an evidence-based approach into practice based upon current guidelines for treating this disease; Implement current best practice for the management of patients with persistent arytenoid granulomas; Adopt into routine clinical practice a simple nasal examination scoring system which has the potential to increase consistency of reporting examination findings both among different patients and within the same patient s examination findings over time; Examine superior canal dehiscence syndrome through case-based diagnostic methods and treatment alternatives; Know the role of HPV in the pathophysiology of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma; Practice strategies for counseling patients about the role of HPV in the disease and about available treatment alternatives; Examine implications of the Affordable Care Act; discuss key issues facing medicine and increase the ability to plan for business changes facing practice over the next five years; Review advances in gene therapy to address deafness; Compare differences in neuromodulators and fillers available for cosmetic applications in the aging face; Assess skull base techniques and review landmarks that allow confident surgical approaches to the sphenoid sinus, even without image guidance. ACCREDITATION The University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine (UCSF) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. UCSF designates this educational activity for a maximum of AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physician should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. This CME activity meets the requirements under California Assembly Bill 1195, continuing education and cultural and linguistic competency. Nurses: For the purpose of recertification, the American Nurses Credentialing Center accepts AMA PRA Category 1 Credit issued by organizations accredited by the ACCME.
