2 The Medical Management of HIV/AIDS and Hepatitis EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES This course provides the active, intermediate to advanced clinician, with a comprehensive review of the science of HIV and hepatitis as well as the application of HIV, HCV and HBV therapy. We will continue to offer 4 hours of didactic lecture for highly motivated new clinicians, labeled as the New Clinicians Track (NCT). Lectures are presented by a group of leading clinicians and researchers who are also dedicated to teaching in their areas of expertise. In the opening plenary, Monica Gandhi, MD, will help us understand the lessons of our national epidemiology while Diane Havlir, MD will frame the conference by giving her keen take on the top 10 issues in HIV medicine, followed by Steven Deeks, MD, who will continue the exploration of the proximity to a cure. In addition, ARV therapy will be explored with a focus on fixed drug combinations for initial and experienced patients and a lively debate will ensue over when to switch ARV's. On the final day of the course, you will be able to privately test your ARV judgment and compare it to the choices that our master clinicians make on the ARV panel. Other topics including end organ disease (dermatologic, bone, HPV disease and reproductive health) as well as primary care management of HIV patients (vaccines, primary care guidelines, PrEP, transgender health, motivational interviewing and lipids) will be weaved throughout the course. Glen Treisman, MD, PhD, will give a Thursday plenary on the psychiatry of AIDS as well as a Saturday plenary on HIV, aging and mental health. This year, Dr. Annie Luetkemeyer will lead the Hepatitis session which has been vastly expanded to address new options for patients co-infected with HIV and HCV and/or HBV. This session will address questions that arise in the care of chronically co-infected patients, including the safe administration of new, more efficacious therapies. A small group session will illustrate how the UCSF-SFGH Clinic helps to support co-infected patients to successfully engage and remain in treatment. This symposium is presented by the HIV/AIDS Division, San Francisco General Hospital, Department of Medicine, University of California, San Francisco, School of Medicine. An attendee completing this course will improve skills and strategies to: Apply to practice the latest treatment guidelines and recommendations for the prevention of HIV perinatal transmission; Identify new developments and apply treatment recommendations in HIV related dermatologic, and bone diseases as well as mental health; Apply new recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of sexually transmitted infections; Exercise new recommendations for appropriate vaccinations in HIV-infected individuals; Exercise new recommendations for lipid management in HIV-infected individuals; Apply new recommendations for timely switching of antiretroviral combinations in appropriate patients; Distinguish and exercise new recommendations for treatment of antiretroviral resistance and apply current treatment strategies for experienced patients.
