7 ANNUAL CAMPAIGN TOGETHER WE CAN BUILD A BETTER US 7 The Y is a cause-driven organization focused on three key areas: youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. We believe a strong community can only be achieved when we invest in our kids, our health, and our neighbors. As Jada was entering high school, she was very shy, but wanted to start the year with a fresh start. She decided to look to the Y for an opportunity to connect with and impact other people. Her first assignment at the Y was as a youth sports assistance coach. She had little knowledge about soccer, but had a great mentor throughout the season. Coach Isabelle helped me communicate, be more outgoing, and coach in general, said Jada. After the end of soccer season, Jada transitioned into coaching for youth basketball league. At the start of the season, she was an assistant to Coach Chang, but was asked to coach a team on her own. Watching her team improve and learn skills that she was teaching inspired her to stay involved. It opened up another part of me that I didn t even know, said Jada. I m helping kids and I see other volunteers helping people without even getting paid. That s where I learned the Y had value. With over 15 years as a military family, moving comes as no surprise to the Christ family. Moving from the East Coast to the Pacific Northwest with their four young children was their biggest move yet. When they reached Washington, Becky and Jeff searched for a familiar feeling and quickly discovered that they Y was exactly what they were looking for. We had been active members of the Y in Delaware and Virginia Beach during previous military assignments and always loved how the Y served everyone and looked to make a community, said Becky. One of their children, Mikey, has special needs. In the past, it s been difficult to see Mikey excluded from activities, but the Y has embraced and uplifted him. They welcomed us with open arms and have just loved him and our other little ones, said Becky. You have amazing staff with pure and good hearts and we are Water isn t always a place where people feel comfortable and confident, but Rudy and Bonnie are determined to provide a great experience in the pool. Volunteering for over 20 years has opened Rudy s eyes to more than just what s on the surface. We re just as much a social group as we are an exercise group, said Rudy. Because of Bonnie s strong passion for water safety, she has donated her time as a swim instructor for over 40 years! I refer to myself as the Swim Grandma, said Bonnie. My goal for every child is to understand how to float and swim safely.
