The VON are joining us to address topics that impact both men and women including falls prevention, the benefits of exercise, proper nutrition, and plenty of tips that will help you maintain your zest for life. Cruise away the Cold: If the snow is falling and you want to trade your winter coat in for shorts and flip flops, why not consider a cruise? There are a number of interesting options and cruises available to fun-in-the-sun destinations all around the world. Maritime Travel Belleville s experienced travel consultants will tell you all about cruising and all the fun you can have both on the ship and off. Adam Short, who knows firsthand about cruising with mobility issues, will be available to let you know how easy it can be! victorian Christmas traditions: Join Melissa Wakeling, Education and Marketing Coordinator of Glanmore National Historic Site for a fun exploration of the origins of Victorian Christmas traditions. You will be amazed at how the Victorians continue to influence modern Canadian Christmas traditions. Learn about the history of Christmas decorations, greeting cards, Christmas crackers, family dinners and more! Melissa will bring along some artifacts and reproductions for hands-on exploration. unleash Your healthiest You: The road to better health is lined with simple practices like good eating, moving and sleeping habits. But as we ve all experienced, simple isn t the same as easy. This presentation by Carolyn Coffin from the Eat Real Food Academy will cover practical tips for mastering your everyday habits and unleashing a healthier you this year. Get Your ey! Understanding Ontario Credits and Benefits for Seniors: Jeremy Bertrand from the Ontario Ministry of Finance will be joining us just in time for tax season. Are you receiving all of the Ontario tax credits and benefits you are entitled to? Attend this luncheon to see what credits and benefits you may qualify for, how to apply for them, and how to obtain additional information. Container gardening and Shrubscaping: Have you been thinking about how to make your yard easier to maintain? Container Gardening is a simple alternative to flower beds that will quickly add color to your landscape and Shrubscaping is a low maintenance way to make a handsome and lasting addition to your yard. Meet new friends, learn new skills, enjoy some refreshments or use the computer room. The cost is only $5.00 per year! Activities and programs include: Scrabble, Euchre, Computer courses, Bridge, COPD Support Group, VON Falls Prevention Exercise Program, Parkinson s Keep Moving Exercise Program, Coffee Hour, Movie Nights, Stitches, Cribbage, Bid Euchre, Mahjongg, Scrapbooking and more. Activities take place each day and special speakers and events are scheduled to provide information on a variety of topics including medical, financial, travel and more. 4 sports programs Fall Programs begin the week of September 14th Winter Programs begin the week of January 4th No Classes: Oct 10th, 11th & 12th, Nov 11th, Feb 15th Crokinole Join us on days to socialize and have fun playing Crokinole. Whether you are a beginner or a seasoned pro - you will enjoy this classic game. This is a drop-in program for all ages. Location: 50+ Centre. 6:30pm 8:30pm Fall (28625) Winter (28626) Badminton This drop-in co-ed badminton program will offer participants the opportunity to be active and meet people in a non-competitive, fun oriented atmosphere. Location: Gymnasium No program: Oct 12th, Feb 15th, Mar 7th or 14th. 8:30am 10:30am (shared with Pickleball) Fall (28376) Winter (28377) Pickle Ball Pickleball is an extremely popular sport which combines elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis. It is played on a court with the same dimensions as a doubles badminton court and is played with a hard paddle and a whiffle ball. This smaller area combined with the slower moving ball makes pickleball easier to play than tennis. Location: Gymnasium No program: Oct 12th & 22nd, Nov 11th, Jan 29th, Feb 15th, Mar 3rd, 4th or 14th to 18th Shuffleboard Begins September 24 (12 weeks) Join us each week at the shuffleboard courts to hav fun and work on perfecting your aim! This program offers older adults the opportunity to be gently active while socializing with friends and enjoying the popular game of shuffleboard. 5 HEALTH & WELLNESS PROGRAMS Fall Programs begin the week of September 14th Winter Programs begin the week of January 4th No Classes: Oct 10th, 11th & 12th, Nov 11th, Feb 15th Gentle Pilates Pilates workouts focus first on developing core strength, the back, abdomen and hips. Body weight resistance as well as bands and stability balls are used to gain a better mind/body connection. Through breathing instruction and modifications, you are encouraged to work at your own level to increase strength, flexibility and coordination. Line Dancing Line Dancing not only burns calories, it also tones muscles, improves balance, relieves stress and stimulates brain cells in a way that traditional exercise can t. It requires the co-ordination of brain and body, which strengthens neural pathways and improves cognitive health. Come out and try Line Dancing - you will have a great time! Location: Multipurpose Room (some classes may be in other rooms check your receipt for details) Qi Gong Qi Gong is an ancient Chinese art and science. Like Western biofeedback therapy, it is a form of systematic training in psycho-physiological self-regulation. There are four basic applications of Qi Gong health, longevity, martial power and spiritual enlightenment. Stretch and Strengthen An exercise program geared to give you both upper and lower body muscle strengthening and flexibility. This program is ideal for people with arthritis, osteoporosis, and fibromyalgia. This program is suitable for both men and women Stretch & Balance Fit This is a great class to help you move better, feel better and become stronger while having fun. This class is based on the same dance moves used in an original Zumba class, but it is less intense, with dance routines designed for beginners and older active adults. There is a longer warm up and cool down to help improve balance, flexibility and cardiovascular strength. Strong Seniors Studies show that weight-bearing exercises stimulate bone growth. The use of free weights, machines and aerobic exercise in this program will help you reach this goal. Learning to use proper form, breathing techniques and full range of motion to increase flexibility will make you feel stronger and more Location: Workout Studio Thur Thur Winter (10) $69.00 $69.00 $57.50 Bone Health This class is designed for those with osteoporosis or anyone wanting to maintain bone strength and structural integrity. It includes strength, posture and balance training, weight bearing aerobic exercises and techniques that encourage fall prevention and facilitate everyday living. 2:45-3:45pm 2:45-3:45pm Mindfulness Meditation This half-hour class will explore techniques to bring the mind into a quieter state, allowing us to let go of anxieties and move into peacefulness. Mindfulness practices teach us to be fully present in each moment of our lives. Chair Yoga Our special Chair Yoga classes are for those who no longer wish to be up and down off their mats. It offers participants modifications to regular yoga to accommodate those who require it. 7 HEALTH & WELLNESS PROGRAMS Absolute Beginner Yoga () This class is appropriate for older adults who have been physically inactive or are recovering from injury or illness, but who want to regain strength and flexibility. Graduates from this class should be able to move into the regular older adult yoga classes. Drop-in s available if space permitting at $5.50 per class 1:00-2:00pm 1:00-2:00pm OLDER ADULT YOGA CLASSES Yoga For A Strong & Healthy Back (Adult) Learn the basic yoga postures and breathing techniques to help develop a strong back and increase your flexibility. Gaining core strength will also enhance back support and stability. Yoga is a form of exercise combining slow steady movements, controlled breathing and relaxation. This program is for adults over 55 years and older.
