2 WHAT IS PHYSICAL EDUCATION? It is a school-based obesity intervention program. It is a tool in reducing health-care costs. It is a laboratory for growing brain cells. It is a speech class that teaches brain cells to communicate better. It is a fertilizer that provides the brain with all the special nutrients it needs to develop. It is a prescription for ADHD, depression and related behavior disorders. It is reading, writing, and arithmetic in a movement format. It is a process that develops the total child - Body/Mind/Spirit

10 WHAT DO WE KNOW? RESEARCH

11 IF TRENDS CONTINUE Her life expectancy will be shorter then her mother s by five years She will not meet MCA proficiency targets She could become a strain on an over-stressed health care system AND

12 WE KNOW THAT There is a definite scientific connection between exercise, cognitive learning and coronary Health. Especially Aerobic. Too many of today s children are failing in fitness, health and wellness. Too many of today s children are overweight or obese Too many of today s children are failing in the classroom.

13 WE KNOW THAT 9.9 Million children ages 6-19 are overweight (5.4 million boys and 4.5 million girls). 33 Percent of today s children or obese or overweight.

14 WE KNOW THAT The odds are 4:1 against an obese child becoming a normal-body weight adult if changes aren t effected by before adolescence. The odds are 28:1 against an obese child becoming a normal-body weight adult if changes aren t effected by the end of adolescence.

15 RESEARCH SHOWS Physical Education is an effective tool in reducing obesity and the many tag-a-long diseases related to hypo-kinesis (too little movement). Physical Education improves learning and testing. Physical Education improves attendance, attention during class and reduces behavior interventions.

16 RESEARCH SHOWS Having a healthy heart and lungs (Aerobic Fitness) may actually be one of the most important factors that enable middle school students to score higher in reading and math. A meta-analysis of 59 studies done from 1947 to 2009, showed that students who were more physically fit had higher cognitive achievement than their less fit peers. Current research suggests that the motor skill learning provides the foundational framework needed for learning processes such as reading and math. The more physically fit a child the faster they acquire or refine motor/sport skills

19 STANDARDS Developed Around Content Standards Carver s program is based on or adapted from six NASPE content standards to guide all instruction. While the standard is not the curriculum element, all instruction and assessment are designed around meeting these six content standards

26 FREE PLAY Free play is a physical educational instructional strategy or tool for teaching movement. It is not simply throwing out the ball and letting chaos rule. Free play is simply a physical education lesson with minimal structure. When used correctly it contributes to the total development of a child in ways structured motor skill and fitness development lessons cannot.
