Dates listed are start dates. Register early to avoid disappointment if your class is full or is canceled because too few have signed up. REFUND/ REGISTRATION POLICY Please note the dates and times of classes confirmations are not sent. Register early to ensure placement. Same-day registration is accepted if class is not full or canceled. Class times and course instructors are subject to change. We reserve the right to cancel class if too few are enrolled. Class will be canceled three days prior to class date if too few are enrolled. Full refund if class is canceled by the Health Education Center. 2 UHParma.org UH Parma Medical Center If a student withdraws from a course, a refund less a $5 processing fee per class is given if a verbal or written request is received five business days before start of class. Cancellations received less than five days but before the first day of class will be credited by gift certificate, less a $5 processing fee. No refunds will be given on or after the first class, no exceptions. Decisions to maintain classes are based on the enrollment. Students assume risk of change in personal affairs or health. Refunds are not available for one-session programs or for not attending class. Any refund in the amount of $10 or less will be given as a gift certificate. YMCA s Diabetes Prevention Program Did you know that losing a modest amount of weight and increasing your physical activity could help you prevent or delay type 2 diabetes? The YMCA s Diabetes Prevention Program can help you reach your healthy living goals. The program has been shown to reduce the number of new cases of diabetes by 58 percent. The reduction was even greater for adults over 60. This year-long small group program is for people who are at high risk for becoming diabetic. Generous financial scholarships are available. You do not have to be a YMCA member to join this program. Come learn more on the second Monday of every month. 4 AGE WELL BE WELL Age Well Be Well Club For those 55 and older. Join this fastgrowing membership club from University Hospitals. This program will help older adults stay active and socially engaged. The club is FREE and offers a variety of benefits including monthly activities, walking club, yoga classes, support groups, free newsletters and calendar of events, free Age Well Be Well magazines, and free subscription to Center for Lifelong Health Better Living e-newsletter, special events and programs, and more. Beyond Driving with Dignity Beyond Driving with Dignity certified professional will help families with older drivers make appropriate driving-related decisions. The three-hour self-assessment includes a workbook and resources. Call for information and registration. NEW! Be Well Walking Club Put your walking shoes on and join staff from UH Parma Medical Center at the James Day Park at West Pleasant Valley Road in Parma (weather permitting). Use entrance by the playground and pool area. Check out the new fitness equipment and outdoor fitness trail. You do not need to be a member of Age Well Be Well to join the walking club. Registration suggested but not necessary. Label Reading Look for Hidden Traps A closer look at nutrition labels is essential for a low-cholesterol, heart-healthy diet. You will learn the label lingo and be an expert at deciphering the sometimes confusing nutrition labels. Taught by a registered dietitian. 1 session FREE Thursday, September p.m. NEW! Medication Safety with Blood Thinners Blood thinners (also called anticoagulants) are commonly prescribed medications. Some examples included Coumadin, Xarelto and Pradaxa, as well as many others. These medications are very important, but also must be taken safely. This class is intended to provide education to patients who may be using these medications, and to allow the opportunity to ask a registered pharmacist any questions that you may have about your medications. Taught by a clinical pharmacist specialist from UH Parma Medical Center. 1 session FREE Wednesday, July a.m. WOMEN S HEALTH Women s Health Expo Join us for a fun morning retreat where women can focus on their own health so they can be healthy and strong for their families. At this retreat, you will enjoy interactive presentations with easy-toimplement tips on how to live healthier. Hear a panel discussion featuring physicians from a variety of specialties address issues affecting women today. Bring your questions and bring your friends! Attend free health screenings and shop at our exhibitor tables. Each participant will receive a complimentary gift. 5 Chair Yoga For people with physical limitations and people who don t think they can keep up in a regular yoga class. Medications in Pregnancy and Lactation Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid unnecessary exposure to medication; however, this approach isn t always practical, and many pregnant women may need to take over-the-counter medications. Even though OTC medications are generally safe when used as directed, pregnant and breastfeeding women should exercise additional caution when taking medications. This class is intended to discuss information to weigh the benefits and risks of OTC medications that may be used during pregnancy. Taught by a clinical pharmacist specialist from UH Parma Medical Center. 1 session $15 Wednesday, July 6 6 7p.m. EMS To register for any of these classes, call UH EMS Training & Disaster Preparedness Institute A variety of classes taught by nationally registered paramedics: Paramedic training EMT Basic ACLS. PALS. ITLS Instructor courses in CPR, ACLS, PALS and ITLS are also available. EMT Basic Training Daytime and evening classes available. This 15-week class is taught on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, offered in summer, fall and winter. Paramedic Training Classes run for 12 months, beginning in September and January. Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers For those who need a credential card documenting successful CPR course completion. Covers adult and pediatric CPR, two-rescuer CPR, foreign-body airway obstruction and AED. 1 session $65 Saturdays, July 9; August 13; September 10; October 8; November 12; December 10 9 a.m. 2 p.m. SCREENINGS Appointments or registration required.
