2 Critical Care Medicine & Trauma June 9-11, 2005 Fairmont Hotel, This course is designed for specialists in critical care (intensivists) and emergency medicine, anesthesiologists, hospitalists, internists, surgeons, nurses, and respiratory therapists. Its purpose is to provide recent advances and state-of-the-art information pertinent to critical care medicine and trauma. Lecturers will discuss updated information regarding the pathophysiology and management of disorders commonly encountered in the practice of trauma and the intensive care unit. Several workshops are available for those interested in specialized training in airway management, percutaneous tracheostomy placement, ventilator management, and advanced anesthesia techniques. The conference is presented by the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, and the Department of Anesthesia and Perioperiative Medicine, and is sponsored by the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES An attendee completing this course should be able to describe: Critical Care Medicine and Trauma Course Objectives: Current pathophysiology and diagnosis of ventilator-associated pneumonia; Limitations of plain film radiography in the intensive care unit; Current approach to pain and sedation in the intensive care unit; Optimal use low of tidal volume ventilation in critically ill patients; Appropriate use of noninvasive ventilation for acute respiratory failure; Important elements of the neurologic exam in critically ill patients; Approach to acute renal failure in the intensive care unit; Goals of early goal-directed therapy for septic patients; Various choices for providing nutritional support of critically ill patients; Principles of fluid resuscitation; Basic approach to the trauma patient; Diagnostic approach to acute mesenteric ischemia; Presentation of necrotizing fasciitis; Evaluation and treatment of the patient with acute liver failure; Rapidly fatal infections in the intensive care unit. ACCREDITATION The University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine (UCSF) is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. UCSF designates this educational activity for a maximum of category 1 credits toward the American Medical Association (AMA) Physician's Recognition Award. Each physician should claim only those credits actually spent in the activity. The approved credits shown above include 1.5 credits toward meeting the requirement under California Assembly Bill 487, Pain Management and End-of-Life Care for physicians licensed in California (except radiologists and pathologists) to complete 12 hours of continuing medical education in pain management and/or end-of-life care by December 30, The approved credits shown above include 2.75 credits toward satisfying the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma requirement for trauma-related continuing medical education. The Continuing Respiratory Education (CRCE) system of the American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) has granted Category 1 approval for 16 total hours. For the purpose of recertification, the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) accepts AMA PRA credit issued by organizations accredited by the ACCME.
