After his return to Brazil, Dr. Cavalcanti had some successful grant applications and became a full-time faculty in endodontics at the Sao Paulo State University. In 2014, he was recruited by the University of Michigan and moved to the United States to start a new phase in his career. Dr. Cavalcanti is married to Dr. Marcia Campos, also a new faculty in the Department of Oral Pathology, Radiology and Medicine at the College of Dentistry and father of two kids: Rafael, a 5-year-old boy and Lisa, a 3-year-old girl. Two Articles Co-Authored by College of Dentistry Faculty Are Among the 2016 Top 10 Journal of Dental Education Editor Picks Two articles by College of Dentistry faculty were chosen among the top 10 Journal of Dental Education (JDEA) picks for 2016 selected by JDE editor, Dr. Nadeem Karimbux. Dr. Michelle McQuistan (left), Department of Preventive & Community Dentistry, and Drs. Justine Kolker (left, middle) and Sandra Guzmán-Armstrong (lower left), Department of Operative Dentistry, were co-authors on two of the top 10 articles. Dr. Rebecca Slayton, former head of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, was also a co-author on an article. 2 Affordable Care Act Article by Dr. Peter Damiano Published in the Des Moines Register Page 2 On December 16, 2016, the Des Moines Register published an article by Dr. Peter Damiano about possible repeal and/or replacement of the Affordable Care Act. Dr. Damiano, Department of Preventive & Community Dentistry, and director of the UI Public Policy Center (PCC) as well as the Health Policy Research Program at the PCC, noted the possible impacts on Iowans if Medicaid expansion and subsidized exchange-based insurance are eliminated, the loss of federal dollars, the repeal on the cost of private insurance, and the effects of these changes on the health of Iowans. College of Dentistry Has Among the Largest Number of Articles Published in JDE for 2016 by Dental Faculty/Staff Who are Primary Authors The Journal of Dental Education reports that the UI College of Dentistry had one of the largest number of articles published in 2016 by Iowa faculty or students as primary authors (6). The University of Michigan had 7 articles published by its faculty who were primary authors. Harvard University and the University of Florida College of Dentistry tied with Iowa (6), and the University of Minnesota School of Dentistry had 5 articles.
